Chapter 393: When Are You Coming Back?

Chapter 393: Chapter 393: When Are You Coming Back?

After making the necessary arrangements, Daniel drove straight to one of his properties in the area where the three Dark Ops squad leaders were being held.

As he reached the villa’s gate, his phone rang. It was Chantelle.

"When are you coming back?"

Daniel’s heart skipped a beat, and he quickly replied, "I’m leaving right now. I should arrive in about three hours."

"Did you read your medical report carefully? Your stomach problem is serious." Chantelle was flipping through Daniel’s report while waiting for her own test results from Alexander. That was when she noticed the section about Daniel’s stomach condition.

Daniel’s stomach was full of holes, yet he still ate irregularly and acted as if nothing was wrong.

Before, his mind had been occupied only with Chantelle. He read her medical report carefully, but he tossed his own aside without a second glance.

If Philip hadn’t gone with Russell to pick up Xander, he might have noticed Daniel’s health problem. But with Philip away, there was no one to look after him.

Then again, that wasn’t entirely true. Didn’t his wife still care for him?

A smile slowly spread across Daniel’s face, like snow melting under the sun, dazzling those who saw it. The bodyguards guarding the villa were stunned. They had always thought Daniel was born with a poker face.

"Don’t worry, my wife. I know what I’m doing. Everything is fine." Daniel said with a smile.

Chantelle was annoyed at his teasing tone. "Do you realize your attitude will delay your medication progress?"

"It’s just delaying my medication progress..." Daniel started to say, then suddenly stopped. A smile spread across his face. "So, does my wife want to take the medication with me?"

Chantelle was agitated that his mind was still on that.

"Alexander just said we need a supporting device in case something unexpected happens during the medication. There’s only one device, and its lifespan is short. If I run into a problem and use it before you, there might be nothing left for you when you need it. Do you understand?"

The phone call fell silent for a few seconds. Chantelle thought Daniel would take the problem seriously, but instead, his chuckle came through. "My wife, you’re worried about me, aren’t you?"

Daniel’s greatest fear was losing Chantelle’s love and facing her silent treatment. Hearing the concern and urgency in her voice filled his heart with sweetness, like honey.

"I don’t care whether you come back or not. I just don’t want the children to suffer from losing their father!" Chantelle retorted before hanging up. She immediately regretted making the call.

He doesn’t even care. Why am I the one so worried?

After calming down, she saw Daniel’s name flashing on her phone. She hung up the call immediately. She even wanted to block his number, but then remembered she was still in Carcosa. She didn’t want to start a fight that might benefit others. With a sigh, she turned her phone face down, hoping it would stop bothering her.

After Chantelle hung up on him, Daniel went straight home, leaving the Dark Ops interrogation to Ashton. Ashton would be arriving that night anyway.

What mattered most was making his wife happy.

Three hours later, Daniel reached the research site. Philip and Russell had already brought Railer over. Railer looked at him with a displeased expression.

Daniel pinched his cheeks and asked, "What’s wrong?"

"Daddy, where have you been?" Railer frowned. He couldn’t understand it. Daniel was usually sharp, but lately, he had been messing up.

"I have to deal with some matters. What happened?"

Seeing Railer’s serious face and not finding Philip or Russell, Daniel felt nervous. He quickly walked toward Chantelle’s room.

Railer followed him and grabbed his clothes. "What’s the use of going now? It’s too late!"

"Is mommy inside? What happened to her?" Daniel’s eyes turned red as he reached out to push the door open.

Railer blocked the door and whispered, "Mommy is asleep. Don’t wake her up. Uncle Nelsen just gave her a shot. Mommy cried in pain the whole time, but you weren’t here, daddy!"

Daniel could almost picture Chantelle curled up, crying in pain. His chest ached so much that he could barely breathe.

Daniel had only been gone for a couple of hours, and something serious had already happened.

"Uncle Nelsen said there’s still a virus in mommy’s body that wasn’t detected before. The shot just now was for that virus. Uncle Nelsen said there are three shots in total, and each one hurts a lot." Railer explained, while Daniel’s face showed regret.

Daniel turned the doorknob and peeked into the room. He saw Chantelle sleeping with her back to the door.

"Daddy, where were you just now?" Railer asked again, looking unhappy.

Daniel closed the door, rubbed Railer’s head, and said, "Daddy got a call that the person who looks like your grandma woke up. Daddy went to confirm if it was her."

"Daddy, promise you won’t leave mommy’s side again, okay?"

"Okay." After saying that, Daniel opened the door and walked in.

He crouched by Chantelle’s bed, staring at her for a long time. Then he took her hand and kissed it gently. As he lowered his head, about to kiss her lips, Chantelle suddenly opened her eyes.

Daniel and Chantelle stared at each other, and the moment became awkward.

Just as Chantelle frowned and pulled back, Daniel quickly pressed his lips to hers.

"She looks exactly like my mother, but I’m not sure if she’s working for Trenton. They acted like normal victims."

Daniel kept the posture of kissing Chantelle. He spoke in a low voice, and his mouth barely moved. No one could tell he was talking unless they looked at it closely.

Chantelle looked at him calmly. "Got it."

Before the accident that day, from what she knew of Trenton, she believed he would try everything to create conflict between her and Daniel when he faced him.

So she told Daniel to act according to the situation. She asked him to pretend he was interested in whatever Trenton arranged and to leave her.

Everything went as she expected, but she hadn’t thought Kane would break into Trenton’s monitoring system, or that Trenton would track the children through the internet. She also hadn’t expected Daniel to fail to return in time to save the children.

As for the woman who looked exactly like Daniel’s mother, none of them knew she existed. Daniel’s shock at that moment was real, so they didn’t need to put much effort into acting in the scenes that followed.

"Still mad at me?" Daniel asked, then kissed her lightly on the lips.
