Chapter 392: Chapter 392: A Familiar Old Woman
When she turned around, she saw Daniel standing by the window, speaking on the phone. His brow was tightly furrowed, and his tone was urgent. Chantelle only caught a vague part: "Alright. Don’t let her move around. I’ll be right there."
After hanging up, Daniel walked over to her and said, "I have something to attend to. I need to go out for a while."
Chantelle didn’t respond. Daniel gave her a deep look before leaving.
Once he left the research site, Daniel drove north. His destination was far, and it would take four hours to get there.
At that moment, the situation was urgent. Daniel didn’t think too much about it and simply arranged for his people to handle things there. There was no use regretting it now.
When he arrived at his destination, Daniel rushed into a hospital and went straight to the fourth floor of the inpatient department. He pushed open the door to a hospital room and saw two women huddled together, crying.
The two women looked up at him when they heard the noise. Their eyes were filled with confusion and helplessness.
"Who are you? Why do you keep us here?" the young woman asked fearfully.
Daniel didn’t answer. He walked over to the middle-aged woman and stared at her face for a while before asking, "Are you okay?"
The middle-aged woman looked at Daniel in confusion, then shook her head.
Daniel dragged a chair over and slammed it to the ground. He sat down in front of her with a commanding presence. Staring at her carefully, he asked, "Where’s your husband?"
The middle-aged woman glared at him angrily, as if seeing him as some pervert harassing her.
The young woman quickly walked in front of her protectively, like a fledgling shielding its mother. "What do you want? This is a society governed by law. Don’t even think of doing something unlawful against us!"
"I saved your lives yesterday. Have you forgotten so soon?" Daniel raised his eyebrows and pulled out a packet of cigarettes. But when he noticed the middle-aged woman’s pale face, he quickly put it away.
The young woman stared at Daniel seriously. After a moment, she seemed to recognize him and exclaimed with joy, "It’s you! You’re the one who saved us!"
"You’re right. It was me who saved you." Daniel answered without taking his eyes off the middle-aged woman.
The young woman’s eyes dimmed with disappointment. Her voice carried a trace of bitterness as she asked, "Then why did you lock us up?"
"Yesterday’s incident is complicated. I’ve arranged for people to guard outside for your safety," Daniel explained patiently.
The middle-aged woman did not speak the whole time, but she breathed a sigh of relief after hearing Daniel’s words.
Daniel’s frown became deeper and deeper. Could he have mistaken her for someone else?
If the middle-aged woman wasn’t his mother, then why had she risked her life to block the bullet and save him?
"I see. We misunderstood you earlier, and we’re sorry," the young woman said softly, her face turning shy.
Daniel glanced at her and gave a faint smirk. "There’s no need to apologize. I haven’t even thanked her for saving my life yet."
The young woman was about to speak for the middle-aged woman, but Daniel cut in and said, "Thank you for saving my life."
Daniel didn’t believe the middle-aged woman would stay silent the whole time.
As expected, she realized the situation and finally responded, "You’re welcome. It was just a coincidence."
Daniel smiled without saying anything. He had seen what happened clearly back then, and it was definitely not a coincidence.
"My godmother has always been a kind person. She always helps people in need. She even adopted more than a dozen orphans before," the young woman said on her behalf.
Daniel seemed intrigued by this and asked, "Does your godmother like children very much?"
"Yes, I always felt I should have a child of my own, but..." The middle-aged woman lowered her head as she spoke, then wiped her tears with her sleeve.
Seeing this, Daniel looked at the young woman. Her eyes were also brimming with tears as she explained, "My godmother had a severe illness. After she woke up, she couldn’t remember anything from her past. She used to say she always dreamt of a little boy calling her ’mom.’ She believed it was a sign from God to take care of poor children. That’s why my godmother ended up adopting so many children."
By the time the young woman finished, the middle-aged woman was already crying uncontrollably.
Daniel’s heart trembled, and countless thoughts ran through his mind. Still, he kept his face calm and composed.
"You both should rest well here. If you need anything, let the bodyguards know." Daniel stood up, ready to say goodbye to the two women.
The young woman seemed to have a crush on him. She looked at him with reluctance. "Will you visit us again?"
"Of course, I will. Your godmother saved my life. I’ll take care of both of you until you’re discharged. All the expenses during this time will be covered by me." Daniel’s tone was firm and charming. The young woman was captivated, but it gave him goosebumps.
"You’re too generous." The middle-aged woman lifted her head and looked at Daniel with warmth.
Daniel’s eyes softened, and his voice became gentle. "You were hurt saving my life. It’s only right that I cover your medical expenses."
The middle-aged woman glanced at the young woman with hesitation. The young woman then smiled politely at Daniel. "Thank you for taking care of us. May I know your name?"
"Daniel Wilson," he answered simply.
The young woman’s face lit up with joy, and she quickly introduced herself. "I’m Daisy Brown. My godmother’s name is Victoria Jackson."
"Ms. Brown, Ms. Jackson, please rest well. I’ll come back in a few days," Daniel said as he walked out.
Daisy followed Daniel to the door and asked softly, with reluctance, "Mr. Wilson, will you really come back in a few days?"
"I have a lot of work at the company, but I’ll try to make time to visit." Daniel gave her a slight nod before leaving quickly.
Once inside the lift, Daniel called his bodyguard. "Have you set up the cameras and recording devices in the hospital room?"
"Yes, everything is in place."
"Good. Send more men to watch over them. If they ask the bodyguards, you may reveal my identity. But make sure every word and action inside that room is recorded."
