Chapter 438: Chapter 438: What a Joke
The private room was so quiet it was almost silent.
It wasn’t until Nadia Archer returned, with Diana Dempsey trying to make conversation with a smile, that the atmosphere eased a little.
Yolanda Thorne didn’t want to wait even a minute longer. She stared straight at Nadia Archer, "Well, have you made up your mind?"
Evelyn Clayton turned her gaze to the person opposite her and saw that Nadia Archer appeared much calmer and more composed than before, with an even deeper smile in her eyes.
Nadia Archer slowly spoke, "Director Thornton, if I sign with your side, will you let me earn money by any means necessary?"
Her question was calm and indifferent, with no discernible tone.
Yolanda Thorne assumed that Nadia Archer had already decided to agree with her and glanced triumphantly at Evelyn Clayton.
But Evelyn Clayton just smiled faintly, unperturbed.
"Of course!" Yolanda Thorne declared definitively, "With me, you won’t have to worry about not making money!"
Nadia Archer pondered, "If that’s the case... then Director Thornton—"
Yolanda Thorne’s smile grew even broader, as if she had already won, her gaze flying over to Evelyn Clayton, full of assured victory.
"Sorry, but I’ve decided to renew my contract with Aegis."
Nadia Archer, calm as water, stood up with a smile and extended her hand toward Evelyn Clayton, "Director Clayton, I hope you won’t go back on your word. I will do my best as Gem’s spokesperson."
Evelyn Clayton stood up gracefully, shaking hands with Nadia Archer under the disbelieving and dark gaze of Yolanda Thorne.
"Don’t worry, Miss Archer, I will keep my promise."
Nadia Archer nodded with a smile, "Now that business is done, I still have something to attend to tonight, so I will take my leave."
Saying that, Nadia Archer ignored Diana Dempsey’s shocked look, turned, and left.
Evelyn Clayton didn’t try to stop her, just stood there watching Nadia Archer’s back as she left the private room.
Diana Dempsey quickly came back to her senses, her face turning a fierce shade of blue as she hurriedly excused herself and chased after her.
Evelyn Clayton leisurely picked up the wine glass on the table, glanced over at Yolanda Thorne, and curved her lips into a smile as she raised her glass as a gesture.
"Sorry, Director Thornton, but it seems I have a slight edge again." Evelyn Clayton drank all the wine in her glass, noticing Yolanda Thorne’s furious expression, "Director Thornton, business has its ups and downs, don’t get too worked up."
Yolanda Thorne slowly stood up, her gaze darkening as she stared at Evelyn Clayton, "What do you mean? Evelyn Clayton, don’t tell me you actually think you’ve won? Signing someone with no longer any commercial value like Nadia Archer, what good will it do you?"
Evelyn Clayton smiled faintly, "If she had no value, then why did you bother coming here today, Director Thornton?"
She sat back in her seat with a smile, pouring herself more wine, "Was it because you were bored?"
"Evelyn Clayton, don’t get too cocky!" A hint of crimson surged in Yolanda Thorne’s eyes, "Don’t think I don’t know that you manipulated the shares of Aegis! Guess what, if Harrison Grant finds out, what will he do? At that time, even James Grant won’t be able to help you!"
Evelyn Clayton remained calm and indifferent, casting a half-smile, half-not glance at Yolanda Thorne.
"Yolanda Thorne, should I say you’re pitiful, or ridiculous?"
"Do you think Harrison Grant wouldn’t know it was me who secretly bought those shares of Aegis? Is Harrison Grant so foolish in your eyes?"
Saying that, Evelyn Clayton looked her directly in the eye with a well-prepared attitude.
"Moreover, it’s laughable how you keep mentioning James Grant. Frankly, I’ve never cared if James Grant could do anything for me. You racked your brains, even causing Thorne Holdings trouble, and still couldn’t get a glance from the person you desire."
"As a fellow woman, I don’t want to criticize your lovesick behavior; but as a business person, you’re truly a bit pitiful."
With that, Evelyn Clayton stood up, called Iris Lockwood to leave with her.
When she reached the door, she paused and turned back with a charming smile.
"Oh, I almost forgot, Director Thornton, too much wrongdoing will bring you down. Watch your little schemes, or one day you’ll find yourself caught, and that will be a real joke."
