In his daily life, Qi Mo’s demeanor towards others was generally gentle, though this was merely on the surface.
Now, his eyes were gradually turning cold, clearly conveying a warning.
Ami’s gaze filled with despair. She looked at the man before her with unwillingness. “Brother Qi, I’ve never brought this topic up with you before, afraid you wouldn’t like it. But now… you’re not even giving me a chance. Can you tell me why? Is there something wrong with me that prevents you from developing feelings for me?”
Qi Mo frowned, his impatience evident in his eyes.
“Ami, I’ve told you, you were never the one I wanted.”
“But why did you allow me to stay by your side all this time?” Ami looked at Qi Mo, unwilling to concede. Biting her lip, she uttered this question. Throughout their conversation, her gaze never wavered from the man before her. She was unwilling to give up, determined to observe his every emotion, not wanting to miss a single detail.
But…
She had hoped to catch a glimpse of even the slightest crack in his facade, but all she saw was his growing impatience. The next moment, she heard his deep voice, “Our families are old friends. What do you think?”
Ami couldn’t help but let out a desolate laugh. “So, is that all there is to it?”
“What else?” Qi Mo asked, his face cold.
Ami shook her head in disbelief. If she weren't afraid, she would have grabbed his arm at that very moment. She took a deep breath, suppressing the pain of her ragged breaths, and said, “But my parents and your parents both think we are a good match.”
“That’s just what your family thinks,” Qi Mo remained unmoved. Seeing that Ami seemed to still want to say more, he interrupted, “Since you know the reason, please don’t get too close to me in the future, alright?”
Tears.
Suddenly, they began to fall uncontrollably. She knew this man was heartless, knew he had never liked her from the very beginning, but…
She never expected that when she finally confessed her feelings, he would treat her in such a manner. It hurt her deeply.
Her heart ached.
“Brother Qi, you know, my heart has only ever held you. I’ve never been close to any other man, nor have I ever given any man the opportunity to get close to me. We grew up together. I’ve been devoted to you. And she…”
Just as the woman was about to say more, Qi Mo’s face darkened. “Enough.”
Clearly, he did not want to hear Ami badmouth another person.
Ami’s parted lips froze. The words she was about to speak were forced back down her throat.
She knew Qi Mo was on the verge of anger, and if she continued, she couldn’t predict the consequences.
But then, she would never be able to approach him again.
Ami’s face turned ashen, her heart shattered. Qi Mo, however, had no intention of listening to her any longer. He stood up coldly. “Don’t come here anymore during this period.”
Ami’s expression changed drastically. She immediately looked up at Qi Mo. “I… I dare not hope for you to marry me, but now you’re even taking away my chance to come and see you?”
Qi Mo walked upstairs without looking back, his back a silhouette of heartlessness as he declared, “There’s no need for that. There’s no possibility between us. It’s best for you to give up on the idea sooner rather than later.”
“Brother Qi…” Ami called out to him, unwilling to accept it.
But Qi Mo paid her no mind. His heartless demeanor caused Ami immense pain.
Soon, Qi Mo returned to his bedroom.
He went directly into the bathroom. After showering, he heard his phone vibrating incessantly. He walked to the bed, picked up his phone, and seeing the caller ID, he slightly frowned before answering.
But before he could speak, a furious voice from the other end of the line boomed, “You brat, what have you done now to upset Ami! That girl’s eyes are so swollen, she looks unrecognizable. She won’t say anything when asked, but I can guess it has something to do with you. Yet, she’s protecting you so well! Have you hurt her feelings again!”
Qi Mo’s expression turned grim as he sat on the bed and responded coldly, “If it weren’t for your indulgence, how could she have become so unrestrained in her desire to be close to me?”
“You… you little brat! Ami comes from a good family, she’s beautiful, has a great figure, and is gentle and sensible. Her heart and eyes are filled with you. All these years, she’s never allowed any other man near her, except you, only you. A girl like this is hard to find even with a lantern. Why don’t you cherish her?”
Qi Mo chuckled. “Have you become so fluent in the language of our country, Z?”
“What?” Father Qi was momentarily confused, but the next moment, he understood that he had used the phrase ‘hard to find even with a lantern.’ He was so angered he burst into laughter. “I’m discussing important matters with you, and you’re talking about what?!”
Qi Mo snorted. “Don’t forget, I had a marriage engagement before.”
“She’s been gone for so many years, her whereabouts unknown. Even if she’s alive, she might have already married someone else. How can such an agreement be honored?” Father Qi found his son utterly unreasonable.
But before he could ponder further, Qi Mo spoke calmly, “I have found her.”
“Found her?” Father Qi’s voice was filled with surprise.
“Yes.”
“Who? Where? What does she look like? What’s happening?” A barrage of questions, like sugar-coated bullets.
Qi Mo stated calmly, “You will know in the future. Don’t say anything further to Ami. She and I will have no outcome.”
“You…” Father Qi was clearly angered again, but at this moment, he was more curious about the girl with whom Qi Mo had a childhood engagement. He couldn’t help but ask again, “Putting Ami aside for now, how did you find her? Have you met her? Did you bring her back?”
“Not yet.”
“Haven’t met her?” Father Qi couldn’t help but ask again.
“Haven’t brought her back.”
Father Qi: “…”
He was speechless with anger. “Are you only answering when I ask you a question? Tell me the whole story, what’s going on!”
“You’ll know in the future. I have other things to attend to. I’m hanging up now.”
“You brat, you can’t hang up! You tell me clearly, you…”
But before he could finish his sentence, Qi Mo had already hung up the phone.
Father Qi’s face turned ashen with fury.
“You impudent brat! He hung up on me again!!” With that, the man angrily threw his phone onto the bed and sat at the headboard.
However, the woman lying on the bed let out a cold laugh. “You’re always yelling at our son. If it were me, I’d hang up on you too. Are you going to let me scold you?”
Father Qi became even more enraged!
“It’s all because you spoiled him!!! You’ve spoiled him rotten!!!”
