Lord of Illusions City

Chapter 9 Just a Little Bit Short

Chapter 13 Crisis

Amidst the deafening firecrackers, the off-road vehicle evaded King Kong and the zombies surrounding it, as well as those who, drawn by the noise, abandoned the truck and charged towards Li Chenzhou. It finally came to a halt next to Duan Lei's truck.

"The road's blocked! Get out! We'll switch cars after this section!"

The yellow-haired youth, who looked to be only twenty-four or five and was driving the off-road vehicle, shouted. The others in the vehicle nodded in agreement, shouldering bags and grabbing machetes and other weapons as they exited.

Despite the distraction of the firecrackers, Duan Lei and Zhang Hu in the truck faintly heard voices. Duan Lei frowned, but before he could figure out what was happening, Zhang Hu had already opened the truck door.

Zhang Hu assumed the firecrackers were set off by Li Chenzhou to lure away the zombies. Moreover, he thought he heard the words "get out of the car."

When the door opened, both sides were stunned. The people from the off-road vehicle hadn't expected anyone to be in the truck, while Zhang Hu hadn't expected to see five strangers instead of Li Chenzhou.

To say they were complete strangers wasn't entirely accurate. Three of them were among those who had escaped from that residential complex. Wasn't the chubby, flat-topped one called Zhang Jinlong or something?

"Bro Long! There's a chick!"

Seeing the three people in the truck, the yellow-haired driver's eyes lit up as he licked his lips, staring at Duan Xue.

"What the hell! What kind of time is this? You're still thinking about that?"

Before Zhang Jinlong could speak, a burly man with a scar on his face cursed.

"Se Huang's right! We do need to relax and blow off some steam right now!"

Unexpectedly, Zhang Jinlong stared at Duan Xue with a sinister expression.

He knew exactly how he had escaped the complex. With this curvaceous girl, prettier than any star, he could relax when safe, and in a crisis, he could bleed her to attract the zombies.

Although there were zombies behind them, they were drawn by the firecrackers. The three in front of him had no weapons. He could quickly dispatch the two men, and then use their bodies to buy them some time.

Hearing their words, Zhang Hu leaped up, grabbing the side of the truck. None of the three in the truck had weapons. The rebar with the dagger attached was still on the roof.

"Kill the man, the girl…"

Zhang Jinlong said with a sneer, but he stopped as he felt something was wrong. Where were the firecrackers?

He turned his head abruptly, his body stiffening and his eyes filled with horror.

Where they had thrown the firecrackers, a black mist, about seven or eight meters in diameter, had appeared, engulfing the firecrackers, the off-road vehicle, and the zombies.

Everyone else saw this spectacle, their faces filled with shock. No one thought this was Li Chenzhou's talent, not even Duan Lei and Zhang Hu. They were sure it was King Kong's ability!

"Run!"

Zhang Jinlong didn't care about grabbing anyone anymore. He shouted and prepared to leave with his men.

But the yellow-haired man, who had already reached the truck and was blocking the door, was reluctant to leave. He looked at Duan Lei and Duan Xue, and seeing they were watching the black mist, he steeled himself and rushed forward, grabbing Duan Xue's leg and dragging her out of the truck.

"Ah!"

Duan Xue's scream made Duan Lei react. He quickly jumped out of the truck to save his sister.

"Bang!"

The yellow-haired man, known as Se Huang, was very agile. Although he couldn't use his weapon while holding Duan Xue, he kicked Duan Lei in the head as he squatted down to jump out of the truck!

Duan Lei, whose leg was injured and who had never fought, didn't even try to dodge. He was kicked directly and crashed into the truck, his mind spinning.

The yellow-haired man didn't stop, dragging the struggling Duan Xue towards Zhang Jinlong, shouting:

"Bro Long, make your move! You can have the first taste, I'll just have a sip of the soup!"

"Damn it!"

Zhang Jinlong hesitated for a moment, then turned back and punched Duan Xue in the back of the head. Duan Xue's vision went black, and she passed out.

Zhang Hu, who had gotten the rebar, saw this and raised it, ready to stab Zhang Jinlong. But Zhang Jinlong had already noticed him and quickly lifted the unconscious Duan Xue to shield himself.

Afraid of hitting her, Zhang Hu had to stop, and then prepared to jump down to intercept them.

"Look! The mist is gone!"

Just then, the scarred man shouted, pointing behind them. The others subconsciously looked over and saw that the black mist had indeed disappeared, and most of the zombies had fallen.

At that moment, Li Chenzhou pulled his dagger from the head of an ordinary zombie. About five meters to his right, the tall, burly King Kong had just regained consciousness and was about to pounce on Li Chenzhou.

Zhang Hu was shocked. He didn't care about Duan Xue anymore. He turned the rebar around, took two steps to get a running start on the truck, then threw it like a javelin.

"Run! We're going to be surrounded!"

Although the firecrackers had stopped, at least a hundred zombies had appeared on both sides of the road, running towards them. Seeing this, Zhang Jinlong threw Duan Xue over his shoulder and ran towards the blocked road ahead, shouting in a low voice.

His four companions woke up as if from a dream and followed him.

Meanwhile, Li Chenzhou had also seen King Kong pouncing on him, but he ignored it. He raised the dagger in his hand and pounced on another zombie, successfully stabbing it in the head.

Then, he immediately dropped the dagger, turned to face King Kong, and raised his arm. Just as King Kong's ferocious face was less than two meters away…

"Bang!"

A crisp gunshot rang out. King Kong's right eye instantly became a bloody hole, and its body crashed to the ground like a collapsing mountain.

"Whew!"

Li Chenzhou dodged King Kong's body and finally breathed a sigh of relief. It was too damn close, just a little bit more.

The black mist was naturally the Fog of War. Its disappearance wasn't because Li Chenzhou had deactivated it, but because his mental strength couldn't support it anymore. After all, he had just used it, and his mind hadn't recovered yet.

Fortunately, he had killed the last one in time, earning enough kill points to exchange for the pistol just as King Kong pounced on him, taking it down.

"Careful!"

Before Li Chenzhou could relax, Zhang Hu's anxious voice reached his ears. He immediately turned around and saw that the makeshift spear he had made with the dagger and rebar was right in front of him, no more than a meter away. He could even smell the stench of the zombie blood on the dagger…
