Chapter 24 Pit of the Dead
We noticed many holes from the floor to the walls to the ceiling, all the same size, large enough for two people to pass through. They appeared to be man-made. The holes higher up from the floor were equipped with hanging ladders made of some unknown but seemingly sturdy material.
In the corner of the room were piled up many tools resembling knives and axes.
Han Yu looked around and said, "This seems to be some kind of thoroughfare, a crossroads connecting different areas."
I crouched down and peered into the dark, bottomless hole at my feet, trying to see where it led.
As I gazed into the depths, a piercing scream suddenly came from behind me. I was about to turn around, but someone pushed me, and I fell into the dark hole…
I thought I heard Fatty shouting, but I couldn't make out what he was saying. I tumbled down the hole, getting tossed and turned until I was dizzy and disoriented.
I felt like I had fallen from a hole in one room into another, and then from that room to the next level down. The height of each room wasn't enough to kill me, but the constant falls made me dizzy, and before long, I lost consciousness as I fell.
When I woke up, I was seeing stars, my body ached all over, and my bones felt as brittle as if they could break at any moment. A foul stench assaulted my nostrils, almost suffocating me.
I tried to sit up, fighting through the pain. As I supported myself with my hand, I heard a "snap" sound. I seemed to have broken something under my hand, like I had fallen into a pile of firewood.
Using the dim light in the room, I picked up the broken object and took a closer look. It was a bone. Looking around, I saw nothing but white bones.
I was so startled that I forgot about the pain in my body and the snapping sounds beneath me. I scrambled to my feet, only to realize that I was standing on a pile of bones. The skulls peeking out from the pile made me realize that this was a pit of the dead…
The bones in the pit were stacked layer upon layer, and I didn't know how high the pile went below where I was standing. I looked up at the top of the pit. It was a curved structure with a hole on each side, about three meters above me.
No, I had to get out of here.
There were no ropes or ladders, and I couldn't reach the holes. The pile of bones under my feet was loose and soft, and would crumble into shards if I put any weight on it, so I couldn't jump.
The stench in the pit was unbearable, and the sight of the bones was terrifying. I didn't care anymore. I endured the stench and searched through the pile of bones for skulls, which I used to make a staircase. I stepped on the skulls and climbed up, finally grabbing the edge of the hole and pulling myself out of the pit with every ounce of strength I had.
The hole was pitch black and formed a steep passage. I moved slowly, using both hands and feet, and finally reached the upper room after climbing for what felt like more than ten meters.
After crawling out of the hole, I collapsed on the ground, exhausted. I thought to myself, finally, I had escaped that disgusting place.
The room I had just climbed into was not large. It was a cylindrical structure with a curved wall, and the ceiling and floor were flat. There were only two holes in the entire room, one in the ceiling and one in the floor, where I had just climbed out.
After resting, I began to think about how I had fallen into the hole. I remembered that everyone had been fine at first, so why had they suddenly screamed?
Could it be that they had seen something terrifying? I didn't know. The only memory I had was the sound of people screaming and the feeling of being pushed.
After a good rest, I decided to look for Fatty and the others. I didn't know where they were, but if I kept climbing up, I should have a chance to find them.
At that moment, I suddenly noticed something flickering on the wall, something very strange.
I walked closer and was so startled by what I saw that I stumbled back. Behind the amber-colored bricks of the wall stood rows of expressionless people, their numbers astonishing. They were arranged neatly and compactly, with many layers, so that those further back were difficult to see. There were men and women, old and young, and they were dressed differently, mostly in the primitive clothing of ancient tribes, rough cloth that barely covered their bodies. But their expressions were very calm, and their faces were lifelike, not like the dead.
I patted the wall and felt that it was made of some unknown rock. I wondered how these people had gotten in. The room was like a human exhibition hall, and the thought of the bone pit sent shivers down my spine.
I looked around at the walls and felt that the figures on the wall were becoming clearer and clearer, as if they would break through the wall at any moment. I felt uneasy, so I quickly climbed the ladder towards the hole above.
The terrifying and eerie environment was like a shot of adrenaline, and several times I felt a cool breeze on my back, as if a cold hand had been placed there.
So, as soon as I climbed to the upper room, I immediately looked for the ladder leading up, trying not to look at anything around me. Driven by the terrifying atmosphere, I climbed up two levels of rooms in a row.
As I climbed, I noticed a pattern. The higher I climbed, the bigger the rooms became. According to this pattern, I might soon find Fatty and the others.
Just as I was about to continue climbing, I heard a rustling sound in the next room. I immediately became alert, tiptoed to the tunnel connecting to the next room, and listened intently, holding my breath.
There were footsteps, and a faint sound like a woman crying, mixed with her repeatedly mumbling "oh my god," "oh my god."
The voice sounded familiar.
Damn it, it was Zoey.
"Is that you, Zoey?" I whispered, making sure not to startle her.
The crying in the next room suddenly stopped.
I continued, "It's me, Zhao Chenguang."
"Where are you, Young Master… Sob, sob, sob…" Zoey's crying resumed.
I quickly rushed into the tunnel, running a short distance, and arrived at the room where Zoey was.
When Zoey saw me, she ran over with tears streaming down her face and hugged me tightly, sobbing, "Sob, sob, Young Master, I've finally found you."
I gently patted Zoey on the back and said, "It's okay, it's okay, don't cry."
The hug lasted less than two seconds before Zoey suddenly pushed me away and backed away repeatedly.
I stood there, stunned, looking at her in confusion.
Move your fingers and cast your precious gold and silver votes, thank you!
