Chapter 219: Sacrifice (3)
Once the middle aged man said this, he didn’t hesitate to bring down the dagger on the cultist that was on the altar.
It wasn’t as if they couldn’t sacrifice themselves at the altar, it was just that no sane person would choose to do something like that.
It was only natural that they would fear death and would choose to sacrifice those that they caught.
Only now that the ones that they caught to sacrifice were fighting back, they had no other choice.
At least the middle aged man didn’t want to die.
As soon as the cultist was stabbed, his blood dripped all over the altar.
It didn’t take long before some kind of effect came from the altar as if the blood of the cultist was being absorbed by it. It really seemed like this altar was thirsty for blood with the way that the blood was absorbed.
Once the blood disappeared, there was this sensation that came from the altar.
"Demonic energy?" I couldn’t help muttering my breath when I felt this sensation.
Since one of my avatars was the demon king, I was quite sensitive to things like this. It was easy for me to tell if something was related to the demons just based on the feeling that it gave.
But since I knew that it was the demons, I knew that this was bad.
This kind of altar was only used when summoning high ranked demons...
A high ranked demon wasn’t something that I wanted to deal with.
Though to be fair, it wasn’t as if it was certain that I would even be able to deal with a high rank demon. So naturally I didn’t want to see a high rank demon appear out of this altar.
So to stop that, I had to stop them from sacrificing anyone else.
The cultists seemed to realize what the middle aged man was planning to do, so they all started running away. But before they could get far, the middle aged man suddenly said, "Stop!"
They didn’t completely stop which showed that they had some resistance, but they did move slower which showed that his mind control magic did have an effect.
Once they all slowed down, it was easy for the middle aged man to catch up to them and drag them back to the altar.
Though he was a chubby middle aged man, he surprisingly moved quite fast for his frame.
In a few seconds, he already dragged and stabbed two different cultists on the altar.
The blood that they released was quickly absorbed by the altar and it seemed like there was something gathering on the altar with how the energy seemed to condense. It really seemed like there was something that was being summoned by this altar.
In the end, I knew that I couldn’t be hesitant any longer.
I didn’t charge forward since there were all of those cultists that were there and it would be hard if they swarmed me, but that didn’t seem to matter anymore. All of the cultists seemed like there was only one thing on their mind which was to get away from the middle aged man.
In that case, it should be easy for me to get him.
But when I charged forward, I was surprised to find that several of the cultists suddenly jumped at me even though they had been slowed down by the middle aged man’s mind control magic.
The looks on their faces were filled with desperation as they did this.
It was as if they wanted to do anything that they could to survive.
It wasn’t hard for me to figure out what they were thinking.
The middle aged man was targeting them because they didn’t have a sacrifice for their ceremony after what I did. That was why they chose to swarm me so that they could capture me and use me as a sacrifice.
They were doing this so they could survive.
Though I didn’t understand why they didn’t just fight against the middle aged man when he tried to sacrifice them.
I could already tell that he was their leader, but they didn’t seem to fight back at all...
It was as if there was fear that was embedded in them by this middle aged man...
Still, this wasn’t the time to think about the relationship between the cultists.
What was more important was stopping the middle aged man from doing what he was doing.
That was why I swung my dagger without hesitation and cut all those that came at me.
The problem was that there were simply too many of them around me that I couldn’t cut them down fast enough. As soon as I cut one down, there were two others that took their place.
I wasn’t in danger since I was faster than them and could easily avoid them, but there really were just too many of them for me to make my way past them quickly.
They simply used numbers to block my path like a zombie hoard.
During this time, the middle aged man had dragged two more cultists over and sacrificed them.
The moment that he plunged his dagger into the fifth person, that was when there was a strong reaction that came from the altar. The energy that was gathering atop the altar seemed to be resonating with something, as if enough energy had been gathered.
After that, there was a pulse of power that came from it that pushed everyone away, including the middle aged man.
The one thing that I had to say that I was impressed with was how the adventurers were still asleep during this time. It seemed that the medicine that had been used to knock them out really was a powerful one...
After the energy gathered, it started taking form.
This was the form of a demon.
"The lord is descending! All of you sinners will be punished!" The middle aged man laughed when he saw this.
I just looked at the altar and the figure forming with knitted brows, but that was soon replaced with a wry smile.
"Why is it you?"
