Chapter 398: Seeking Forgiveness
Wen Nuan’s mother came downstairs and shook her head at Cheng Anya. Ye Feimo remained unresponsive. Cheng Anya looked at her son and went upstairs herself. Wen Nuan would see anyone but Ye Feimo.
Ye Feimo sat downstairs, waiting for Cheng Anya, his eyes fixed on the stairs. Wen Nuan’s mother sighed when she saw how thin he had become. He had just started to look a little healthy, but now he was all skin and bones again. His face was very haggard, and it broke the hearts of his elders.
Wen Nuan’s mother remembered that Cheng Anya had said Feimo hadn’t eaten anything since he woke up. She poured him a bowl of soup. Ye Feimo didn’t move. When Wen Jing saw this, she had an idea. "Brother-in-law, my sister just drank this too. She hasn’t eaten anything else, just this soup. She said it was delicious. Why don’t you try it?"
Ye Feimo picked up the bowl and drank it all.
Wen Nuan’s mother praised Wen Jing for being smart. Wen Jing humbly accepted the compliment.
Upstairs.
Cheng Anya said, "Nuan Nuan, I know that Feimo was wrong this time and that he caused you to lose your baby. I also know that some wounds can’t be healed with an apology. He will accept any punishment you give him, but Nuan Nuan, can you give him another chance?"
Wen Nuan lowered her head, her face blank. She didn’t say anything. Cheng Anya had been talking to her for the past few days, but she had barely paid attention. Not just Cheng Anya, but she hadn’t said a word to her own mother, either.
No one knew what she was thinking.
Wen Nuan’s silence was frightening. It made Cheng Anya feel that she had already made a decision, and it was one that Feimo would not be able to handle. She was a mother, and Feimo was a child she had always worried about. She was a little biased. Perhaps as she got older, the most sharp parts of her personality had been smoothed out, and she couldn’t be completely objective about some things.
If she were thirty years younger, and something like this happened to her and Ye Sanshao, and Ye Sanshao had pushed her down the stairs and she lost their baby, she wouldn’t be able to forgive him, whether it was on purpose or not.
Even if she forgave him, she wouldn’t be able to live with him without holding a grudge.
But now, her thoughts were completely different.
If Wen Nuan planned to leave Feimo, she didn’t know how her son would handle the blow. The incident from seven years ago was enough. She didn’t want to go through it a second time. She really didn’t.
So, even if she had to beg Wen Nuan, she wanted her to stay married to her son, even though she knew it wouldn’t be very effective.
Wen Nuan didn’t say anything. Cheng Anya gently held her hand. "While you’re blaming Feimo, you should also think about how he’s feeling. We all believe you didn’t do anything to betray him, but Feimo has been through something like this before, and it hurt him for seven years. You know what that scene meant to him. It’s understandable that he lost control of his emotions. It wasn’t his intention to hurt you. It was an accident. He never liked you being an actress and working in the entertainment industry. Your conflicts have always been about this, and they’ve been getting worse. Feimo’s emotional wounds were getting worse, and seeing this scene would have made anyone lose control. Even those of us who have been through a lot wouldn’t be able to accept seeing our spouses with another person. I know he must have said some terrible things to you, but can you not take what he said when he was angry to heart? Can you give him another chance?"
Wen Nuan lowered her head and gave a bitter and sarcastic laugh, but she still didn’t say a word. Cheng Anya’s heart sank.
Wen Nuan pulled her hand away from Cheng Anya’s and turned her head to look at the blue sky and white clouds outside the window, her expression calm.
"Whether you forgive him or not, at least see him. You can vent your anger at him," Cheng Anya said.
Wen Nuan shook her head.
Ye Feimo waited for an hour before Cheng Anya came downstairs. Wen Nuan’s mother quickly went to her and asked, "How did it go?"
"She still won’t talk."
Wen Nuan’s mother sighed. "I’m so sorry. Wen Nuan has always been spoiled by us. She’s never been so wronged, so she’s a little... Please don’t take it personally."
"Of course not. I understand. Feimo was wrong this time," Cheng Anya said. She didn’t plan on keeping anything from Wen Nuan’s mother. "You must have heard about Wen Nuan and Fang Liucheng being at the hotel..."
"Nuan Nuan would never do that. I asked Liucheng, and he said they absolutely didn’t," Wen Nuan’s mother said, her face changing. She thought Cheng Anya was blaming Wen Nuan and quickly defended her daughter, her face showing displeasure.
Cheng Anya smiled. "My dear, don’t be nervous. I know she wouldn’t. But Feimo’s ex-girlfriend also did something like that, and Feimo caught her in the act. It was a huge blow to him. They got into an argument, and Feimo accidentally used too much force, and Wen Nuan fell down the stairs. That’s how the baby was lost. I’m truly sorry. It’s my fault for not raising him right. That’s why this tragedy happened. I hope you can forgive him."
Wen Jing looked at Ye Feimo in surprise. Wen Nuan’s mother’s eyes reddened. "I knew it. Nuan Nuan has always been so soft-hearted. She’s so easily moved by a kind word from her family and friends. How could she... So it’s really..."
Wen Nuan’s mother blamed Ye Feimo, but it was an accident. No one wanted this to happen. Seeing him in this state, she couldn’t bring herself to blame him.
"Nuan Nuan... if that’s the case, Nuan Nuan probably won’t be able to..." She probably wouldn’t be able to forgive him. It’s a matter of a life. It’s not that simple to forgive.
"I know. That’s why I hope you can talk to her more. Feimo is not a violent man. You know better than I do how he treats Nuan Nuan. This time, no one wanted it to end this way. He’s always been a quiet person. He keeps his emotions to himself and never says what he means. He doesn’t know how to ask for forgiveness. Since Nuan Nuan won’t talk, he’s not doing so well either. I’m afraid that he won’t be able to comfort her with his words. You know Nuan Nuan better. If you still think Feimo is a good son-in-law and a good husband, please talk to her more."
"I understand. Don’t worry, I will talk to her," Wen Nuan’s mother said. She knew in her heart whether Feimo was a good son-in-law and a good husband. Besides, marriage and love are two different things, and it’s always better to make peace than to separate.
For the first time in so many years, Cheng Anya was talking to Wen Nuan’s mother in an apologetic tone. No matter what, Feimo was in the wrong first, and he was a quiet person. If she didn’t help him say something, his in-laws would blame him.
"Feimo, let’s go back," Cheng Anya said softly. "We’ll come back when Wen Nuan is in a better mood, okay?"
