Chapter 424: Promise of a Lifetime
"You’re so stupid. You can’t even make simple egg noodles," Wen Nuan mumbled, throwing the noodles away. This guy was so picky about food; there was no way he would eat what he had made.
Ye Feimo stood obediently to the side and watched. Wen Nuan looked at the ingredients in the fridge and decided to make him a steak. She was good at making Western food, and since she didn’t know what else to make for him, she chose steak, which he liked.
"You haven’t cooked for me in a long time," Ye Feimo muttered, as if he didn’t even realize he was saying it.
There was a rare vulnerability and a hint of a complaint in his voice.
Wen Nuan’s movements froze. Her heart felt heavy and ached. All sorts of emotions rushed to her. What was she doing? She was making him something he liked. He was cooking just fine, so why did she have to interrupt him?
Even if it didn’t taste good, even if he went hungry, it was his problem.
She was going to leave him sooner or later.
She was going to leave eventually.
He would have to face all this on his own eventually. Maybe he would find another woman to cook for him.
The thought made Wen Nuan’s heart ache uncontrollably.
"You can go outside. It’ll be ready soon." Many thoughts ran through Wen Nuan’s mind, but she couldn’t be too mean. She thought that the meanest thing she had ever done to Ye Feimo was to ask for a divorce.
He was just so clumsy, and she had softened up.
Why was she even thinking about a divorce?
Did she really want a divorce? Who was she kidding?
"I’ll just watch you right here," Ye Feimo said, his eyes filled with affection as he looked at Wen Nuan. She was his home.
She belonged to him.
She would be his for a lifetime.
"Suit yourself."
While the steak was cooking, she also prepared a plate of fried noodles. Wen Nuan was very quick. She finished the steak and the side dishes and then made a bowl of seafood noodles and squeezed a fresh glass of pineapple juice.
Ye Feimo suddenly hugged her from behind. His arms were tight, holding her as if he wanted to mold her into his bones so they would never be separated.
Wen Nuan’s body stiffened. She tried her best to avoid any physical contact with Ye Feimo, especially intimate contact. This was what she feared most about him. She could never be too cold toward him.
"Dinner’s ready," Wen Nuan said in a low voice, her eyes cast down and shrouded in a gray shadow.
His heart felt like it was soaking in a hot spring. Since the miscarriage, he had never felt this kind of warm family atmosphere. It was as if the family he cherished was broken and could never be whole again.
Even when he was being intimate with Wen Nuan, he didn’t feel as close to her as he did now.
It was as if there had never been any problems between them. It was as if nothing had changed.
They were still a couple who were as sweet as honey.
"Can we be like this from now on?" Ye Feimo said. "Wen Nuan, please stop with this nonsense, okay? Can we be like this for a lifetime?"
A lifetime?
If you continue to be with me, will you have a lifetime?
What did a lifetime even mean? She suddenly felt very scared.
Wen Nuan didn’t say anything, but Ye Feimo misunderstood. He thought she still hadn’t forgiven him and was still angry. He couldn’t help but say, "What will it take for you to forgive me? You obviously don’t blame me anymore, so why can’t you just forgive me?"
"I can’t forget some things," Wen Nuan said calmly, pulling herself out of Ye Feimo’s embrace. She was truly afraid of his embrace. The closer he got, the more she had to pull away, or she feared she would lose control.
She brought their dinner out. Ye Feimo stood silently outside the open kitchen. Wen Nuan opened a bottle of red wine for him and said, "Come eat."
He sat down blankly and looked at Wen Nuan deeply before slowly eating his meal.
He clearly couldn’t taste anything.
Wen Nuan was also eating without a taste. She was thinking too much. With Ye Feimo’s personality, she was even more eager to find out where her mother was and wanted to solve this mystery quickly.
After dinner, Ye Feimo received another call. Wen Nuan took a shower, changed her clothes, and sat on the balcony, drinking juice and looking at the night view. Ye Feimo came out and sat down. "I found out where Mom is."
Wen Nuan turned her head and looked at Ye Feimo. "Do you want to go there now?"
The surroundings were very quiet, with only a soft light on the balcony. Wen Nuan lowered her head and was silent for a moment. Then, she shook her head.
The next evening, her mother came back.
She didn’t look any different. Wen Nuan asked with a smile, "Did you see your friend?"
Her mother said, "Yes. What did you two do?"
"We went to the Parthenon. We spent the whole day at the Acropolis," Wen Nuan said with a smile. "There’s not much to see. Tomorrow, Feimo and I are thinking of going to the Aegean Sea to look at the scenery. Do you want to come?"
Her mother looked at Ye Feimo in surprise. After just one day of her being gone, Wen Nuan and Feimo’s relationship had improved a lot. Wen Nuan’s attitude wasn’t as rigid anymore, and Feimo’s face had a little more of a smile. They looked like they were in a great relationship, not at all like a couple getting a divorce.
"Sure. The scenery on the sea is beautiful. You can stay for a few more days," her mother said. She was happy that Wen Nuan and Feimo were willing to go out and have fun. If their relationship could get better after a trip, that would be great. Of course, she didn’t want to be a third wheel.
Ye Feimo said, "We will. I’ll have someone accompany Mom for a few days in the city."
"No, thank you. Mom is very familiar with this place. She doesn’t need anyone to accompany her. You two can go wherever you want. The butler can take me around. Don’t worry about me. Just have fun."
Wen Nuan smiled. "Okay!"
The night passed peacefully. Wen Nuan didn’t ask her mother who she saw or what they talked about. She was quiet all night. In reality, she didn’t want to bring Ye Feimo with her to the sea, but without him, she was afraid her mother would get suspicious.
Besides, if she went alone, Ye Feimo wouldn’t feel at ease and would insist on going with her.
Wen Nuan didn’t sleep at all. Her heart was beating uncontrollably in the dark. Ye Feimo turned his head to look at the small wife in his arms. He was even more confused. What was Wen Nuan so worried about?
He wished that Wen Nuan would talk to him.
At the very least, he could give her a warm hug and tell her that she didn’t need to be afraid.
*You have me.*
