Chapter 396: Chapter 396: You Look Good No Matter What
Luckily, Stephanie was smart. She eventually learned how to deal with Caitlin and, after she started performing, had no chance to stay around Caitlin anymore, so she escaped the abuse.
"It’s all your fault! You bitch! You bewitched my son and forced me to death!" Emelia staggered toward Chantelle, raising her hand to scratch her face.
Daniel’s eyes turned icy. He pulled Chantelle into his arms, then kicked Emelia hard, sending her to the ground with a scream.
But Emelia was still Xander’s biological mother. No matter how much he resented her, he couldn’t stand by and watch her get beaten.
"Mr. Wilson, how can you kick a weak old woman?" Xander demanded sharply.
Daniel had no interest in arguing. He signaled the bodyguards to take Emelia downstairs and detain her together with Caitlin.
Then Daniel looked at Xander with a stern expression. "They laid their hands on my daughter! I only gave them a lesson, or they’d think I’m soft. Mr. Quinn, you should be grateful you saved Steph’s life, or I would have beaten your mother to death!"
"I’m sorry about Steph. I didn’t know..." Xander lowered his eyes to Chantelle, who had remained silent.
Daniel cut him off with a sneer. "Don’t say useless things! That won’t heal Steph!"
"What do you want?" Xander slowly calmed himself. He knew he hadn’t recovered yet, and compared to Daniel at full strength, he was too vulnerable. It was better not to clash with him directly.
Xander understood he had to rest well before he could stand against Daniel.
Daniel didn’t answer. Instead, he looked at Chantelle, signaling that she could do whatever she wanted and had nothing to worry about. But Chantelle couldn’t do anything harsh. She still owed Xander a debt she could never repay in this lifetime.
"Forget it. That’s all for this matter."
Caitlin, who had hit Stephanie, had already paid the price.
Seeing the coldness in Chantelle’s eyes, Xander panicked and quickly said, "I’m sorry for Steph. You always say I saved their lives. Let today’s matter cancel that out. From now on, we won’t owe each other anything, and we’ll just be ordinary friends."
Chantelle was surprised. For Xander, one was his biological mother, and the other was his childhood sweetheart who had been close to his family for generations. For him to do this was already enough.
"Xander, I understand your difficulties. You just need to rest well."
Daniel let out a heavy snort and deliberately took Chantelle’s hand. Given the situation, Chantelle was too tired to argue, so she didn’t pull away.
But when Xander saw their hands together, his expression darkened.
"I’ll leave with my mom. I’ll come to you when I recover. Don’t worry, I’ll keep them under control from now on. If you want to go back to Easthan early, don’t let me hold you back," Xander said with difficulty.
If he didn’t say that, Chantelle would worry about his injuries and still come to see him, even at the cost of enduring Emelia’s insults. Their friendship might not last long that way. It was better to separate for now. Once he recovered and his life was back on track, he would deal with Emelia and Caitlin, then go to Chantelle properly.
The bodyguard carried Xander’s wheelchair downstairs. As they passed Daniel, Daniel smiled coldly and said to him, "Mr. Quinn, you’d better watch your people carefully. If anyone dares to lay the blame on my wife again because of you, don’t blame me for being ruthless."
"Don’t worry. I’ll settle it," Xander replied humbly. He looked up to take one last glance at Chantelle, only to see Daniel holding her face and kissing her quickly.
Chantelle punched Daniel’s chest. When she saw him gasping in pain, she looked at him worriedly.
"You broke my heart. You have to comfort me."
Daniel acted coquettishly toward Chantelle. Then, noticing Xander staring at them, he shot him a provocative look.
Xander felt as if a sharp knife had pierced his heart. Doubt began to fill his mind.
Will Chantelle be inseparable from Daniel by the time I recover and go to her again? No, she used to resent him. She even had stress reactions because of him. How could she accept him without any grudges? Daniel is only acting this way on purpose in front of me.
"Okay, Xander’s gone. Let go of me." Chantelle pushed Daniel away. She had already seen through his intention of showing off intimacy in front of Xander.
"You played along with me. Why don’t we keep going?" Daniel leaned closer with a slight smile, while his steps were light and brisker.
Chantelle suddenly felt it would be cruel to reject him and make that bright smile freeze on his face.
She answered in a muffled voice, "There are so many people here. Do you think it looks good for us to do this?"
"Of course! You look good no matter what." Daniel suddenly bent down and lifted Chantelle into his arms.
After settling the matter with Xander, Daniel felt relieved. He was so happy he almost wanted to sing when he saw Chantelle sitting in the passenger seat.
Philip and Russell sat in the back. Not wanting to feel jealous of Daniel’s affectionate display, they shut their mouths and tried to make themselves less noticeable.
Chantelle pretended not to notice Daniel’s smug look. She closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
Daniel thoughtfully lowered her seat, and when he noticed she was shaking, he turned off the air conditioner. The men in the backseat shot him protesting looks, but Daniel ignored them.
Right now, Daniel’s eyes were only on Chantelle. No other man mattered.
Daniel had been worried about his conflicts with Chantelle, while Chantelle was focused on Xander’s injury and wanted to take care of him.
Even though Philip told her to rest and recover, Daniel knew she still couldn’t ignore Xander’s condition. Even if she couldn’t see him in person, she could still call or video chat with him.
On top of that, Xander had saved the children, so Daniel couldn’t act against him out of jealousy.
As time went on, Chantelle, the children, and Xander would only grow closer. Watching from the side made Daniel restless, and leaving for Easthan right after the medication and recovery would not be easy for him.
Who knew if Xander might come forward and use morality to force Chantelle to stay in Carcosa?
Fortunately, Xander had a crazy mother, and that solved Daniel’s biggest problem. At least until Xander fully recovered, Daniel still had the upper hand over him.
But Stephanie had been wronged and slapped by Caitlin.
