Chapter 136: Chapter 23 Romance on the Balcony_4

"You know what happened after that," Wu Xiaoli said, finishing her story.

"Yes," Sun Dasheng reassured her. "Don’t worry. Now that you’re with me, you can just relax and live the life you’ve always wanted."

Sun Dasheng understood. She’s carried too many burdens that weren’t hers since she was a little girl. Whether out of avoidance or just sheer exhaustion, she’s done with that kind of life.

Sun Dasheng’s situation was different; his family life had always been happy and fulfilling. His only pressure had been academic, and that was only up until university. Since he didn’t plan on further studies, he tossed even that aside and spent his time eating, drinking, and having fun with his classmates.

His real pressure began when he entered the workforce and got married. That’s why he now loathed both the office and the institution of marriage. It was the same principle Wu Xiaoli was talking about.

Different paths, same destination.

"Look at the big stars on stage now," Wu Xiaoli said, offering a novel perspective. "Aren’t they all from well-off families? They never had to worry about anything else from a young age, allowing them to focus solely on their performing arts careers."

Sun Dasheng thought about it and realized it was true. In ancient times, there might have been a chance for someone from a humble background to rise up. But the more time went on, the more impossible that became. The new generation of stars was in a completely different league. They didn’t have to worry about a thing—not even their own performing careers, as all of that was arranged for them.

For an ordinary person, becoming famous was like climbing a mountain. For them, it was a walk in the park. Otherwise, why would their professional skills be so abysmal, yet they could film whatever shows they wanted and perform on whatever stage they pleased?

「Night fell.」

The movie was reaching its end. Wu Xiaoli snuggled into his arms, watching the last scene.

"Dasheng, are you the Supreme Treasure or Sun Wukong?" she asked.

What a tricky question.

"I think you want me to be Sun Wukong," he replied, his answer somewhat unusual.

"Why?" Wu Xiaoli looked up, blinking her large eyes at him.

He leaned down, whispering in her ear, "Because Sun Wukong’s Golden Cudgel can grow or shrink. Don’t you like that?"

"Pah! You big pervert!" Wu Xiaoli spat, her face flushing red.

"Well then, here comes the big pervert." Sun Dasheng’s hands began to roam, making the woman in his arms blush fiercely. Seeing he was serious, she hurriedly stopped him.

"Not here," she warned. "The people in the building across from us can see."

Sun Dasheng felt for the nearby remote and switched off the projector. The balcony plunged into darkness.

"There, they shouldn’t be able to see now, right?" he said.

But while others couldn’t see in, he couldn’t see anything either. He fumbled around for a while but couldn’t find the right spot.

"So stupid!" Wu Xiaoli mocked. Then, she took matters into her own hands, guiding him onto the correct path.

"Be quieter, my mom’s still in her room," Wu Xiaoli whispered, holding her breath.

The more she urged quiet, the more he made her body tremble. She bit down hard, desperate to stifle any sound. This damn man must have a rebellious streak, she cursed silently.

SNAP!

The hanging basket was clearly poor quality. It broke! It seemed Wu Xiaoli had bought a shoddy, counterfeit product.

"What happened?" her mother’s voice called from her room. The noise had been loud enough to wake the sleeping woman.

"Mom, it’s nothing! The hanging basket I bought for the balcony was poor quality, and it broke when I sat in it. I’ll return it tomorrow. You go back to sleep."

"Alright. You two get some rest, and take care of yourselves."

"Okay, Mom!"

By now, the man had lifted her into his arms. He’s so serious about his work, she thought. Even standing, he was determined to finish what he’d started.

A long while later, Wu Xiaoli was draped over him, gasping for breath. She playfully bit his shoulder. "How is your body so ridiculously strong? You held me while standing for a solid half-hour! Are you made of iron?"
