Ermu
Chapter 1324: New Dream
"Aren't you asleep yet?" The latter stopped, raising her eyebrows in surprise.
"I guess I'm getting old, I can't sleep lately," Book Scroll said with a smile, shaking her head. "Is His Majesty asleep?"
"Yes, he returned to his bedroom half an hour ago."
"Then what are you still doing in the office?" she covered her mouth and said. "Don't tell me you're sneaking His Majesty's snacks?"
"Uh… ahaha," Nightingale paused for a moment, then coughed twice. "That's right, I ate his spicy shredded beef and secretly drank two sips of Chaos Drink. Don't tell His Majesty."
This time it was Book Scroll's turn to be stunned.
What's wrong with her... she actually answered so straightforwardly. In the past, Nightingale would never admit it unless she was caught red-handed.
However, thinking that she and Wendy often stole her drinks as well, Book Scroll didn't know what to say for a moment.
"Well, I'm going to sleep first..." Nightingale averted her gaze and walked towards the second floor. "Don't stay up too late either. Roland said that the older you get, the worse the aftereffects of sleep deprivation become." She looked up from the bottom of the stairs, "Good night."
"...Good night." Book Scroll replied somewhat inexplicably, then turned and walked into the office.
Although the fire in the fireplace had died down, the residual warmth from the heating remained, and there seemed to be a faint fragrance in the air. It seemed Nightingale had been here for quite some time.
Without thinking too much, Book Scroll skillfully opened the bookcase, placed the documents in her hand into the sorting processing column, and then took out the materials that His Majesty needed to answer.
Those were extremely long strings of calculation formulas, with handwriting from both Roland, Anna, and Celine. One of her daily tasks was to bring these materials to the Arithmetic Academy, let the astrologers calculate the answers, and then hand them over to the Central Carrier for verification.
Judging from the text descriptions, these things should be related to His Majesty's new experiment. However, she completely didn't understand why they could determine the size of a device that no one had ever seen or even imagined just by calculating on paper. It was as if the things on paper were not numbers, but outlining reality. In her opinion, this was no different from predicting the future.
Whenever she saw Anna's elegant notes, Book Scroll couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder. This girl, who was born in Border Town, had already reached a field that they couldn't understand at all. Clearly, everyone had initially been sitting in this office, watching His Majesty do those interesting popular science experiments, and anyone could chime in with a word or two. But now, the only one who could still closely follow His Majesty was Anna alone.
However, she didn't feel any loss in her heart, only pride.
Because that was her sister.
Book Scroll sat down at Roland's desk and, as usual, opened the documents, intending to memorize them all. This way, even if there were omissions or deficiencies in the distribution of calculations, she could discover them in time.
However, this time she noticed some unusual things.
"Am I… seeing things?"
Book Scroll rubbed her eyes and found that strings of characters were vaguely floating behind some of the formulas, as if they were the answers.
If this were an assessment paper or a household registration file, it wouldn't be surprising. Since she had mastered the tricks of quick searching, she could often tell where a document came from and everything related to it at first glance.
The problem was that this was the first time she had seen this material.
Not only did Book Scroll not understand the meaning represented by those arithmetic formulas, but even the "answers" floating behind them were incomprehensible and difficult to even read.
Moreover, not every formula had similar strange symbols behind it; most columns were still blank.
If she stared at those ethereal symbols for too long, she would even feel dizzy.
It seemed Nightingale was right; staying up too late did have an impact. Book Scroll sighed softly, but unfortunately, she hadn't been feeling sleepy lately, as if her brain was always running at high speed.
She should ask the Medical Wing to prescribe some Sleepfern tomorrow, she couldn't help but think. This thing didn't have many side effects on witches, and taking it once or twice shouldn't have much of an impact.
After barely memorizing all the materials, Book Scroll suddenly felt a strong sense of dizziness rush to her heart, and even her consciousness became somewhat dazed. As her body involuntarily leaned forward, the pen holder on the desk was also knocked over by her.
However, this dizziness came quickly and went quickly. In less than a few breaths, she felt that she had returned to normal. Not to mention any discomfort, her thoughts seemed clearer than before.
Book Scroll blinked her eyes, and after confirming that she was indeed fine, she bent down with a wry smile and picked up the pen holder.
At that moment, she felt as if she had been struck by lightning.
Because the appearance of the floor... had changed.
She would never mistake the scene in His Majesty's office. The floor was made of pine wood from the Misty Forest, covered with a layer of wool carpet. Although the appearance was slightly old, His Majesty had never replaced it. Now, the carpet under her feet was still a wool carpet, but the material of the floor in the distance had changed.
From wood to stone.
How could this be possible?
Book Scroll carefully raised her head, and her heart continued to sink.
Not only the floor, but the entire office seemed to have changed. The lounge chair that Nightingale often sat in had disappeared without a trace, replaced by a row of old iron file cabinets, which at first glance looked somewhat like the archives in the Administrative Hall.
But she should have been in the castle just now!
That's right, the French window!
That was His Majesty's favorite decoration, and also a feature of the office. As long as she looked outside, she could see the lights of Neverwinter City under the night –
Book Scroll suddenly turned around and pulled open the velvet curtains behind her.
What came into view was only a gray brick wall.
There was no doubt that this was no longer the King's Majesty's office that she was familiar with.
She stood up in panic and knocked on the wall twice. The wall remained motionless – she could tell from the steady echo that it was not an illusion, but a real entity.
Book Scroll felt a hint of despair.
Anyone who was suddenly transferred to a completely enclosed strange place would probably feel a strong sense of helplessness and vulnerability.
No… She took a deep breath and forced herself to calm down. Completely enclosed wasn't accurate. There was an inconspicuous iron door in the corner of the wall between the two rows of filing cabinets. It was almost the same color as the cabinets, and it would be easy to overlook if she didn't look closely.
This seemed to be the only exit from the room.
Where would the iron door lead?
Was a trap waiting for her outside, or another wall?
Book Scroll resisted thinking about these questions and slowly grasped the doorknob.
"Click—"
The iron door opened in response.
A ray of golden sunlight shot into the room, and then the silence was broken. Countless sounds rushed in along with the cold air – there were noisy conversations, beeping horns, and continuous footsteps. In front of her, countless people were hurrying along with their heads down, and occasionally some people would glance at her, showing a hint of amazement on their faces.
And behind this group of people, giant high-rise buildings like mountains rose one after another, occupying Book Scroll's entire field of vision.
