Chapter 48: Assembly Call

Just as Luo Lan was in high spirits, preparing to lecture at length on how to establish a reasonable market, a distant horn sounded!

The alarm horn for full assembly would only be blown when the patrol team couldn't handle the situation.

Luo Lan and Carter exchanged a glance and immediately hurried out of the castle courtyard. The royal guards had already prepared the horses. He mounted and, with Carter and his men, rode towards the city wall.

When the group ascended the city wall, the militia was already in position, with a row of gun barrels propped up on the wall, which made Luo Lan feel slightly relieved – all those eggs hadn't been wasted after all.

He looked to the northwest. At the edge of his vision, a group of black figures were approaching Border Town. The prince estimated the number to be around twenty.

Tie Fu jogged over from his defensive position, saluted, and reported, "Your Highness, these evil beasts are coming strangely."

"Strange? Do you mean they don't usually act collectively?"

"Not exactly," Tie Fu explained, "If they belonged to herd animals before they fell, they would still maintain this habit after becoming evil beasts – like wolves, for example. But these evil beasts aren't of the same species, so they shouldn't be acting together. Hunters have even observed them killing each other."

Evil beasts are, in essence, mutated beasts, and their behavior mostly retains the original style of beasts, with an even stronger predatory desire. In a way, evil beasts are even less intelligent than wild beasts, because their manic nature makes them forget even the principle of self-preservation.

Luo Lan observed carefully for a moment and discovered that the individuals in the beast herd were indeed of different sizes, and he could at least distinguish between wolf species and bison species. But this couldn't be taken as evidence that they had suddenly gained intelligence and understood the importance of sticking together.

Because they were still being guided by the obstacles and traps set up by Tie Fu, gradually concentrating in front of the city wall.

Fanna felt his palms were wet, and his grip on the gun barrel was a little slippery. Taking advantage of no one noticing, he secretly wiped his hands on his clothes.

The hunter in charge of observation repeated the same words: "Relax, take a deep breath." Fanna did it countless times, but still couldn't stop his accelerating heartbeat. He had lived in the Western Region for more than ten years, and what he had heard most about was the ferocity and brutality of evil beasts. Since the Month of Demons, the sight of a few scattered evil beasts being shot down by the hunter team under the city wall had alleviated his fear of evil beasts. He originally thought he could be considered a brave warrior, but today, facing so many monsters for the first time, he still felt his legs trembling.

Thinking that he had been selected by His Highness as the deputy of the spearmen team, Fanna tried hard to appear calm, maintaining the posture of holding his gun ready.

The monsters were getting closer and closer, and he could already make out their shapes. The one charging in the front was a bison species, with two black, shiny horns thick enough for his arm. The hair growing on its back covered its whole body like a cloak. When it was only thirty feet away from the city wall, Fanna seemed to feel the ground trembling. He licked his dry lips, waiting for the hunter to issue the stabbing command.

Then a loud noise.

The evil beast didn't slow down at all. It crashed straight into the city wall, its head instantly shattered, and black blood splattered all over the wall.

Before Fanna could breathe a sigh of relief, two wolf species following closely behind pounced up, stepping on the back of the bison.

"Stab!"

The hunter's roar came from his ear, and Fanna subconsciously thrust out his spear – even though the direction the wolf species pounced was not towards him. The effect of this joint attack was obviously not as good as during training. A row of spears on the wall poked out one after another. Some people stabbed out their spears when they saw the wolf species jump up, while others didn't react for a long time after hearing the command.

As a result, only one wolf species was forced back, while the other jumped out of the gap in the gun forest and landed on the city wall.

"Maintain formation!" the hunter roared.

Although Fanna wanted to turn his head to see which head the evil beast would attack, the warning that Tie Fu had repeatedly emphasized during training worked: when attention is drawn away by the movement behind, the front becomes the most dangerous area. He stared straight ahead at the next batch of evil beasts about to arrive, holding the spear tightly in his hand.

The experience of the hunter team

is obviously much richer than the spear team.

When the wolf species hadn't landed yet, the hunters' scimitars had already been unsheathed. Tie Fu was even more agile, directly striding two steps to the evil beast and lifting the butt of the gun upwards, slamming it hard on the opponent's waist, directly knocking it rolling several times in the air.

The mutated evil beast had greatly improved in both physical strength and defense. Such an attack obviously wouldn't cause it too much damage. After landing, it immediately rolled over and stood up, revealing its sharp fangs.

Unfortunately, Tie Fu's gun was already against its forehead.

A gunshot rang out –

The evil beast's skull flew off, and the body, having lost its brain, retreated two steps and collapsed twitching to the ground.

"This beast is dead, continue to guard your positions!"

"Ah! My stomach—" someone screamed.

Fanna glanced sideways and saw a team member sitting against the retaining wall, tightly covering his stomach, his hands already stained with blood.

"His intestines are coming out."

"It was scratched by the claws when that wolf species pounced up!"

"Save me..."

"Damn it, get a cloth to tie it up!"

The scene was chaotic. Fortunately, the next few evil beasts rushing to the city wall were all wild boar species. Although they were thick-skinned, they were all shot into hedgehogs by the hunters' crossbows at such close range.

"Everyone, don't panic!" Luo Lan, who had been stopped by Nightingale and couldn't get over there until now, shouted loudly, "Have you all forgotten what to do when someone is injured during training? Follow the regulations!"

The prince's words instantly awakened Fanna. He remembered his responsibilities. As the deputy of the defensive team on this section of the city wall, he should organize rescue when someone is injured.

He called out the names of two teammates, "You carry him to the medical院, quickly!"

Judging from his past experience, this person basically had no chance of surviving, but His Highness had said that doing it is one thing, and success is another. As a militiaman, he must prioritize executing orders and regulations.

After the wounded were carried away, order was finally restored on the city wall. This wave of evil beasts seemed numerous, but only a few could pose a threat to the people above the city wall.

The hunter team shot and killed the remaining evil beasts one by one, and Fanna also breathed a sigh of relief. The entire battle lasted only half an hour, but he felt that he had exhausted all his strength.

Just then, the hunter in charge of guarding on the watchtower shouted again, "Oh my God, what is that..."

Fanna also saw the target.

Although it was still a long distance from the city wall, judging from the outline alone, this guy must be a behemoth. Fanna swore that even if ten cows were stacked together, they wouldn't be as big as the monster in front of him.

Only the experienced Tie Fu immediately recognized the comer.

He gasped. There was no doubt that this was a mixed species. They were in trouble.
