Poor Xi Xi
Chapter 832 Lan Qi's Big Gray Cat
As the sun set and the lights began to illuminate the city, the bustling crowds gradually dispersed, and the solemn abbey regained its pious tranquility.
The evening ceremony began.
The priests marched in procession toward the altar, holding newly picked moon branches, standing respectfully before the flawless white statue of the goddess, softly chanting the sacred songs that had been passed down for thousands of years.
Candles flickered in the wind, reflecting on every face anticipating the festival fireworks. On this day, Saint Crety Abbey was undoubtedly the closest place to the Moon God in the Crety Empire.
When the sky was completely dark, moon lanterns would be released, fireworks would ascend, and the High Priestess would perform a prayer dance.
On Elliott Square.
"It's getting cold," Ifatia said.
She rubbed her palms together and exhaled a puff of white mist.
As night deepened, the temperature dropped significantly, and it seemed as if snowflakes were falling again from the sky.
She had just had some Saint Crety Abbey pastries with her sister and daughter in the main hall, and now they were wandering around Elliott Square and the streets in front of the Elliott Building, which were full of temporary food stalls.
Initially, they had decided to take her sister to a place where they didn't have to wait in line because the queues in front of the popular stalls were too long.
Now, everyone was focused on finding a good spot to watch the festival, so there weren't as many people buying snacks.
"Mama, wrap your scarf properly."
Hyberia untied the scarf that was about to fall off Ifatia's neck and wrapped it around her again and again.
Ever since Tamisha had criticized her for not knowing how to take care of children in the Shadow World, she had learned how to care for younger people from the Ice Witch, and it turned out to be useful.
The only strange thing was that the person being taken care of was her beloved mother, Ifatia.
"Oh my, it's really embarrassing to be taken care of by you, but I feel from the bottom of my heart that it's so good to be your mother."
Ifatia squinted contentedly, letting Hyberia do as she pleased, finding a new parasite.
Not only could Hyberia hold her hand so she wouldn't get lost and feed her, but she could even ask Hyberia to carry her on her back when she was tired.
Thinking about it, it was really worth it to give birth to Hyberia after carrying her for ten months.
"I'm relieved, it feels like you've both grown up."
Talia chewed on a grilled fish skewer, holding a paper food container filled with many more skewers, and said to the two of them.
It was more like Hyberia and Ifatia could take care of each other, so she didn't have to hold two people's hands anymore.
Back in Ithlete, when the weather turned cold, she would help Hyberia wrap her scarf, and now Hyberia would help Ifatia wrap her scarf.
Today, the three of them had a lot of fun in Brilda. She didn't have to worry about anything, focusing on eating wherever she went, and neither Hyberia nor Ifatia bothered her.
"Sister! You're not allowed to retire, you have to continue taking care of us mother and daughter."
Ifatia, who had just had her scarf tied, threw herself at Talia's side, hugged her, and said to her while snuggling against her.
She winked at Hyberia.
Hyberia immediately understood what she meant and ran to the other side to cling to Talia as well.
"Tata, you still have a lot to teach me."
Hyberia said to Talia.
"Okay, okay... let go of me first, I don't want to get sauce on you."
Talia tried to keep the grilled fish skewers away from them as she agreed.
She couldn't just ignore Hyberia and Ifatia.
"Sister, you're really warm, I'm so envious of that kid."
Ifatia wanted to sleep after hugging Talia.
"..."
Hyberia hesitated for a moment.
She admitted that Ifatia was right because she also admitted that hugging Talia was a very happy thing.
But it sounded a little strange to her.
"No, no, it's also very happy to hug my daughter. Just thinking about that kid being able to hug my daughter in the future makes me so angry."
Ifatia seemed to realize something and hastily corrected herself, she had to be fair.
Under Lanqi's urging, she had successfully changed her wording and replaced "brother" with "that kid."
After saying that, Ifatia felt even stranger. No matter what she said, she was wrong, what kind of mother would give her daughter away like that?
"Don't say anymore, Ifatia, it's getting more confusing the more you say."
Talia ate the grilled fish wholeheartedly.
After clarifying things with Hyberia last time, there was no longer any lingering resentment between her and Hyberia. No matter how her relationship with Lanqi would develop in the end, they would never scheme against each other and would always be the best of family.
"Yes, Mama, as long as you don't mention 'that kid,' we won't be awkward. Tata and I can actually easily sort out our relationship with him, it's only you whose relationship with him is unclear."
Hyberia remembered that when they were in South Vantina Territory and the royal capital Ithlete, the three of them spent the whole day together without worrying too much about seniority issues. Ever since Ifatia appeared, they had also been thrown into confusion.
"Okay, I won't mention 'brother'."
Ifatia seriously agreed.
"Brother?"
Hyberia couldn't understand Crety language anymore. Even using translation magic was like the magic had broken.
"No, no, let's just call him Lan Lan."
Ifatia said, covering her mouth.
She thought for a long time but couldn't find a suitable title. In the end, she found that calling him by his name was the most normal.
So she even pretended to be an elder and called Lanqi that.
Outside, they all used nicknames to refer to Lanqi. Talia was the first one to call him that, and then they slowly remembered it too.
"Lan Lan is okay."
Hearing this, Hyberia felt that her mother had a bit of an auntie aura.
She didn't know if it was her illusion or what, but every time she saw her mother and Lanqi together, she inexplicably felt that her mother was becoming like Lanqi's junior, almost acting coquettishly towards Lanqi, which was obviously very wrong.
This sense of incongruity was as if her mother had been modified by Lanqi's instructions, and even if she fell on the battlefield, she couldn't be used normally by others.
"Why are you all learning my way of calling him? Actually, I really don't call him that usually."
Suddenly, Talia's ears twitched, and her eyebrows furrowed slightly. Her voice and the grilled fish in her hand paused.
She seemed to hear a familiar voice.
It was a voice drifting from afar—
"Yes, she's very beautiful, about 168 centimeters tall, looks about 20 to 25 years old, gray long hair, ideal healthy figure, hasn't had children, speaks very little, almost never smiles, definitely bought a bunch of food from various shops nearby. Yes, if she bought barbecue at your shop, you'll definitely remember her..."
Someone was looking for the shop owners to inquire about someone.
The veins on the back of Talia's hand twitched slightly.
"Lanqi, you get over here!"
She turned her head and shouted angrily into the distance.
"Oh!"
Lanqi heard Talia's angry voice and immediately stood at attention, turning around to report to her.
The shop owner had just raised a finger as if he had a slight impression but hadn't spoken yet when the girl who had just bought a lot of barbecue appeared.
Consistent with the direction the owner pointed, Talia had indeed just bought meals nearby.
Lanqi ran closer to where Talia, Hyberia, and Ifatia were, as if he had something to tell them.
"Great, I found you after leaving the main hall and asking along the way for a while."
Lanqi said with a smile, greeting them.
"You're here! Want to watch the fireworks together?"
Ifatia clapped her hands happily.
Lanqi had finally finished work, she had been waiting for a long time.
"..."
Hyberia glanced at Ifatia again.
Everything seemed right, but something felt wrong.
"I'm sorry, I still have work to do later, I have to prepare a bit, I'm going to see Headmaster Violet."
Lanqi apologized to them with his hands clasped together.
"Can I borrow Tata for a moment?"
Then he looked at Talia, who had just finished her grilled fish and burped, asking Hyberia and Ifatia.
With the help of Secretary Naira's arrangements, Violet, the sixth Divine General of Water Azurite, had agreed to give Professor Landry a private meeting time in her busy schedule, and the time was after the prayer dance on the Moon God Festival, which seemed to be soon.
"Of course."
Ifatia and Hyberia both nodded quickly when they heard this.
They understood why Lanqi wanted to borrow Talia before going to see Violet, the sixth Divine General of Water Azurite.
Lanqi needed a lie detection master, and Talia had the unique ability to detect lies and read minds.
"You can take my sister and use her."
Ifatia said generously.
Hyberia glanced at Ifatia again.
"Then let's go, be quick and come back soon."
Talia threw the paper food container into a nearby trash can and said to Lanqi decisively.
"See you at home later, after I meet Headmaster Violet, Secretary Naira will drive me home directly."
Lanqi bid farewell to Hyberia and Ifatia.
"Come back early, it's getting cold."
Hyberia said to them.
Lanqi's gray coat wasn't very warm, and she didn't know why Lanqi was so insistent on wearing this kind of outfit every winter since he came back from the Northern Continent.
"Don't worry, Hybe, my Side-West Treaty with Sid has been updated to the Hue-Side-West Treaty. We'll explain it to you when we get back. Also, the three of us have to discuss how to divide the rooms."
Talia waved to Hyberia.
The past two days were special, so she stayed in the room with Hyberia to accompany her, while Sigrid slept alone yesterday.
Now that Hyberia had recovered and could move freely, it was time for Talia to go back to sleep with Sigrid. Also, they needed to have a small meeting to discuss where Hyberia should live. Since they were all playing Lanqi's fiancée, they should have the same equal rights as a real fiancée.
Currently, Talia and Sigrid meant that even if they compromised and let Hyberia sleep closer to Lanqi, they didn't want to sleep with Hyberia, otherwise they would both suffer.
…
Minutes later.
The two strolled to the edge of the main hall.
Glimmers of starlight, swaying on the river's surface, faint but warm.
They were bamboo moon lanterns, adorning this special night.
At first, there were only a few, gradually, the number of moon lanterns began to increase.
In groups of three or five, or dozens together, until in the end there were so many that they couldn't be counted one by one.
They danced like fireflies in the night sky, floating lightly upward, turning into a feast of stars.
"Moon lanterns."
Talia murmured to herself, her tone tinged with emotion.
The moon lanterns were hazy, echoing the snowflakes falling from the sky.
The orange lights illuminated the ancient streets of Saint Crety Abbey, and the stone buildings were covered with a layer of golden gauze.
At this moment, it was clearly very peaceful, and the final battle that would mark the end of everything was coming soon, but she felt an unspeakable happiness in her heart.
"Yeah, it's really beautiful from here."
Lanqi next to her echoed, as if the beautiful scenery before them had been created by him alone.
"That aura of yours is really domineering."
Talia said, not critically.
She had discovered during her temporary performance at the Brilda Opera House that Lanqi had a talent for being a domineering Governor, and this talent, in her opinion, wasn't bad. Now she even vaguely missed his limited edition disciple when he pretended to be a domineering Governor.
"Is that so."
Lanqi nodded lightly, his gaze fixed on the street below the steps of the main hall.
Dusk had already arrived, but the abbey illuminated by the lights was no less brilliant than during the day.
Students held bamboo lanterns, either in pairs or walking alone, their faces filled with smiles from the bottom of their hearts.
When the bamboo lantern was lit, the thin wings of the umbrella quickly expanded, carrying the flames and beautiful wishes, slowly rising into the night sky.
Lanqi looked up at the rising lights, his originally lowered gaze slowly moving upward.
He knew that the reason why the moon lanterns could float in the air was entirely because of the buoyancy of the hot air, which had nothing to do with magical miracles.
He also understood that when the fuel ran out and the flames went out, the moon lanterns would eventually fall back to the ground.
But in this brief and beautiful moment, no one would think about these things.
"Just like the Crety Empire, no one thought that perhaps in two weeks, there would be a change that would be enough to subvert the entire world."
Talia said, as if she had seen through Lanqi's thoughts.
"..."
Lanqi looked at Talia in surprise.
He was surprised that Talia hadn't used magic to read his mind this time.
Before he could ask any more questions.
A melodious bell rang through the night, like a stone thrown into a calm lake, causing ripples.
The bell sounded like flowing water, repeatedly striking everyone's heartstrings in a certain rhythm.
"Clang, clang, clang, clang..."
Looking in the direction of the sound, many people participating in the festival had already gathered on the distant high platform, and the bell was coming from there.
People sat around the circular stage, with a sacred fire burning fiercely in the middle.
Today was a time of thanksgiving, a day to build a bridge of communication to the gods, and also an auspicious day to pray for good weather in the coming year.
The people of Brilda praised the blessings brought by the compassionate Silver Moon and the Healing Goddess, praying that she would continue to bless all living beings.
The festival was about to begin soon.
The people who would actually perform the ceremony walked out of the square where the bonfire had been lit at some point.
Walking with rustling steps, wrapped in white clothes, the tall woman—gradually allowed people to see her appearance clearly.
Very different from her usual attire, the Moon God High Priestess, Violet of the Water Azurite, was wearing a priestly robe at this moment, with her shoulders and chest, and her jade-like calves exposed, her skin glowing reddish in the light of the fire.
But all of this could never be tarnished by worldly eyes.
It was only natural for the High Priestess serving the goddess to wear such clothes and perform kagura.
Violet of the Water Azurite raised her staff, her ivory-white arm drawing a beautiful arc in the air.
As the bells on the staff rang, the pure white trajectory cut through the sky, and for a moment, there was an illusion of a chilling wind whistling past.
"In the name of compassion, courage, and wisdom,"
"Moonlight Sanctuary, stars shining,"
"The Silver Moon Goddess descends, and all things are renewed and restored."
"I, at this time and in this place,"
"Piously sing the Song of the Moon God,"
"May your holy light shine upon the earth—"
A clear and ethereal voice echoed in the square, the words forceful and powerful.
This was a sacred song dedicated to the gods, conveying the world's gratitude for the grace of the gods with the purest faith and heart.
The song seemed to penetrate the barriers of time and space, reaching the ears of the gods of the ancient Divine Era millions of years ago.
"We're going to see this Wolf Clan Witch soon... Thinking about it carefully, she's like the chosen one today, and the only one."
Talia murmured, watching Violet's dancing figure with emotion.
Although, strictly speaking, the Divine Generals should be their enemies, Talia couldn't hate the Wolf Clan anymore.
Just seeing Violet reminded Talia of her beloved daughter in the Shadow World timeline, and also reminded her of Sid, the benefactor of her and her sister.
"Yeah."
Lanqi echoed.
"Hey, you already have three fiancées, why are you still staring at her."
Talia poked Lanqi with her elbow, teasingly asking him.
"I'm thinking, Violet probably isn't an enemy, right?"
Lanqi stared at Violet's graceful figure, uttering his inner thoughts word by word.
His tone was low and firm, but with a hint of bitterness.
"You don't want to encounter the same situation you faced with Inoan, right? And you don't want to be threatened by Beelzebub and only be able to rely on the grace of the gods."
Talia quickly realized what Lanqi was thinking.
She knew that Lanqi still couldn't forget the lessons of Flora.
Having stayed in the Crety Empire for a long time, he had actually received a lot of help from the teachers and students of Saint Crety Abbey. If one day they had to become enemies, Lanqi would be more decisive than anyone else, but that didn't mean he didn't feel anything in his heart.
Talia didn't have a soul link with Lanqi at this moment, but she was more certain than ever that Lanqi couldn't truly relax recently and would always remain tense and vigilant.
As with the topic before the start of the prayer dance, with the great war imminent, he, as the command tower, was putting all his effort into it.
"No matter how much I do, no matter how hard I try, all I can get is a chance of victory. So I've done my best, I just hope that the gods can truly grant their favor, as prayed for, and of course, I also hope that the Moon Goddess loves her High Priestess and blesses Miss Violet."
Lanqi said slowly.
"Yes, a chance of victory is not the same as victory."
Talia agreed with Lanqi's point of view.
Even with the support and encouragement of so many companions and friends fighting alongside them, the final result could not be guaranteed.
The shadow of failure followed closely behind the Black Sun Lord, lingering.
This was the realization that Lanqi had gained in that eternal dream in the Shadow World.
"So, I didn't make a moon lantern."
Lanqi admitted frankly.
All the time and energy had to be used to prepare for war, to deal with the Blood Clan, and to prepare for the final battle.
Even if the chance of victory was as high as 99.99%, he would do everything he could to prevent that 0.01% chance of defeat.
In the face of this belief, everything else had to give way.
Without the reflection of the Tiberius Mirror, sometimes a 99% chance of victory would actually be terribly low, like a bubble, because people could only see one side of things, and the other side of the truth was often hidden underwater. These were all the feelings that the Eternal Doom had brought him.
As they chatted, the night sky suddenly went silent.
The festival was over, the holiday was over, and the crowds in Elliott Square, where the bonfire had been extinguished, dispersed, leaving only the lights swaying in the night sky to illuminate Saint Crety Abbey.
The end of the ritual also meant the near end of the Moon God Festival, and the end of the festivities.
It was time for them to get down to business.
After seeing Violet, the day would be pretty much over.
After night fell, the corridors of the main hall seemed even dimmer than in the afternoon.
"I'm the most useful after all, right?"
Talia walked beside Lanqi, proudly raising her chin.
She wanted to appear cheerful and encourage Lanqi.
Lanqi used to say that she was a character given away at the start, but now that the version had been updated, she had finally become Lanqi's human rights card.
"But you're too strong. If I directly say that you're my fiancée and take you to meet Violet, she might discover your strength."
Lanqi seemed to think of a problem and said to Talia.
There were too many people outside just now, and they were focused on watching the festival, so he didn't tell Talia.
Now that there were fewer people around, and they were almost alone walking in the corridor, they could have a good chat.
"That's true."
Talia casually unfolded a portable soundproof barrier.
She knew that she was weaker than Violet. Even if she tried her best to hide her magic power, Violet might be able to see that she was an eighth-level mage if she stayed for too long.
Logically speaking, a fiancée from the border shouldn't have such strong magic power.
"I'll turn back into the Mad Love Demon Lord and go back into your body."
She suggested to Lanqi.
The last time she came to Saint Crety Abbey and Lanqi came to the main hall to see Headmaster Violet, she was in the Mad Love Demon Lord state, hiding in Lanqi's soul space, listening to Violet's words for him.
"Then my work efficiency will be greatly reduced for the next two weeks, and won't Sigrid and Hyberia misunderstand if you disappear every night and rest in my room?"
Lanqi asked her doubtfully.
If he maintained the Mad Love summoning state for a long time, Lanqi would be more tired, and his working hours would be reduced accordingly, using the time to replenish sleep and recover magic power.
"That's true…"
Talia said hesitantly.
She couldn't temporarily become Lanqi's lifebound summon. The best time was before the start of the final battle.
She and the other great demon races also had work to do during these two weeks.
They had to study the Blood Clan modification potion formula left by Lord Esmode of the Midnight in the Shadow World. With the help of the Ice Witch, who was also proficient in magical engineering, and the knowledgeable Pulanae, their research was going very smoothly.
"So what should I do?"
Talia finally looked up at Lanqi.
Since Lanqi brought her here, it meant that there were other better solutions besides turning into the Mad Love Demon Lord.
"Can you make a sacrifice and temporarily turn into a cat and let me hold you to see the Headmaster? The whole school knows that I have a cat-type contract beast. It can be explained that the contract beast is a little stronger than a human. After all, I'm already a seventh-level mage. That way she won't be suspicious. Even if it's discovered, you just need to suppress your magic power to the seventh-level level, and it'll be fine…"
Lanqi was stopped by Talia, whose cheeks were flushed, covering his mouth.
"Do you have any other way?"
Talia asked, staring at Lanqi in panic.
Not to mention how much she resisted turning into a cat, even if she really did, she couldn't let Lanqi hold her like a pet!
She never intended to use that [Transformation: Cat] card she got from the Shadow World last time.
"Then I can only fuse into the Mad Love Demon Lord like before. That's foolproof, but I might be very tired for the next two weeks."
Lanqi said, lowering his eyes and compromising.
He didn't mean to force Talia. If Talia wasn't willing, that was fine. Transforming into the Mad Love Demon Lord in advance was also a solution. He had already prepared to explain the special state of Talia after fusing with the Great Love Poet to his friends.
"..."
Talia was silent for a long time.
She looked at Lanqi's tired appearance and felt a little distressed.
Everyone was enjoying the festival today, but he was working overtime. She had seen it all.
Lanqi hadn't rested since he came to the Empire. She knew it better than anyone.
Talia clenched her fists, hesitating for a long time.
"Then, then I'll transform. Just this once. You're not allowed to touch me randomly."
She gritted her teeth and agreed.
"Thank you, Master."
Lanqi bowed slightly gratefully.
It seemed that he wouldn't have to have his magic power extracted by Talia for the next period of time.
"Come with me."
Talia sensed the surrounding lifeforms, grabbed Lanqi's sleeve, and led him to a deserted corridor in the main hall.
She took a deep breath and took out that semi-transparent natural magic card engraved with a cat paw pattern.
Talia looked at Lanqi with a complicated expression, as if she wanted to cover his eyes, but knew that doing so would be useless.
Then she triggered the transformation technique, and her body began to be covered in silver light, until it was completely wrapped.
Her figure slowly turned into a cat, shrinking her body size with the magic card's spell.
After a moment, the silver light dissipated, leaving only a ragdoll-like gray cat on the ground.
"I actually turned into a cat."
Talia cat raised her paw, looking at her furball form.
After transforming into a cat, she subconsciously wanted to use the cat boss's habitual phrase. It turned out that it wasn't the cat boss's problem.
"You're really too useful."
Lanqi praised sincerely, squatting down and picking up the gray cat.
The gray cat struggled twice at first, seeming a little uneasy about losing her balance, but then she calmed down and rested peacefully in his hands after Lanqi held her steady.
"Don't move around, Master."
Lanqi said, holding the big gray cat.
Just the touch was furry, as soft and warm as a blanket.
"Then, then you have to hold me tight, don't let me fall to the ground."
Talia cat said, using her cat paw to grab Lanqi.
She now felt that Lanqi was touching her without any scruples. Even though this body didn't seem to be hers, Lanqi's temperature would be unreservedly transmitted to her, making her try her best to tell herself not to panic.
"Don't worry."
Lanqi reassured the gray cat, who was gradually calming down, promising.
He felt that Talia was more nervous than he was. Now Talia was just trying to adapt to interacting with him as a cat.
"Then I won't talk anymore, meow, but today's matter is known only to heaven, earth, you, and me."
Talia cat said with an embarrassed voice, agreeing.
Perhaps only by truly treating herself as a cat, and not as a woman, could she interact with Lanqi normally in this state.
Otherwise, just thinking about her being held up in the air by Lanqi made her feel like she wanted to die.
"..."
The corners of Lanqi's mouth twitched the moment Talia added the cat boss's habitual phrase.
"What are you laughing at, meow?"
Talia cat caught Lanqi's micro-expression.
He seemed to be clenching his teeth tightly.
"It's nothing, I just remembered a legendary voice actor."
Lanqi had to hold back his laughter every time he remembered the tone Talia used to imitate the cat boss that day.
Now that he heard Talia doing it again, he couldn't help but recall it.
"I've always been very cute, meow."
The phrase seemed to echo in his ears.
He might never forget it in his life.
"I'll scratch you to death, meow!"
Talia cat understood Lanqi's thoughts and started making a fuss, and couldn't be held.
"Haha, stop it!"
Lanqi tried to hold the gray cat so she wouldn't make trouble.
Two or three students passing by the corridor in the distance were attracted by the commotion, but just glanced and walked past.
"How can Professor Landry flirt with a cat."
"Don't say that, this cat seems to be a contract beast, maybe it can turn into a fiancée."
"Damn, it's too cruel to not even let cats go."
"Can all the cats in his house turn into people? If there are any minors, I'll call the police."
"Honestly, as a last resort, female cats are still okay, but male cats are a bit too..."
They chatted inaudibly.
Lanqi was doing his best to deal with the big gray cat and didn't notice the fleeting commotion in the distance at all.
Until Talia cat accidentally staggered, almost falling to the ground, she was immediately supported and picked up by Lanqi's arms.
"Meow!"
Talia cat exclaimed.
Luckily, Lanqi caught her.
"Master, you're really, anyway, you're only transforming into a cat this once. Let's cooperate and finish the work, and never transform again, okay?"
Lanqi said to the gray cat in his arms.
"Meow, meow…"
Talia cat pretended to be a cat and nodded honestly.
This steady feeling made her heart beat.
She couldn't help but be glad that she had turned into a cat, so Lanqi couldn't see her expression at all.
She didn't know why she was so flustered after turning into a cat. The only thing she was sure of was that she couldn't turn into a cat and have such close contact with Lanqi again in the future.
Her pride as a princess wouldn't allow her to do this again!
"What are you laughing at, meow?"
Talia cat arrested Lanqi's microexpression.
He seemed to be clenching his teeth tightly.
"It's nothing, I just remembered a legendary voice actor."
