Chapter 39: The five-goal storm
La Liga – Matchday 7.
Celta Vigo vs Barcelona – Abanca Balaidos Stadium.
Abanca Balaidos Stadium... located in Vigo, Spain, Balaidos is a stadium with a rich history that has been renovated several times. It is the home of Celta since its inauguration in 1928.
The October sun poured over the Abanca Balaidos, casting long shadows across the pitch as fans and players awaited the moment of truth.
It was a Celta home game so of course, the fans were full of optimism, but by kickoff, it was clear they’d invited lions into their own den.
Hansi Flick rotated slightly, but kept the core of his team: Sam Moses led the line, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha on the flanks, Gavi pulling strings, Pedri marshalling midfield with Frenkie de Jong, while the defensive unit comprised of Balde, Cubarsí, Araújo, and Koundé.
From the first whistle, the high press smothered Celta.
FC Barcelona played with the fearlessness of champions in enemy ground.
In the 7th minute, Yamal produced magic, cutting in from the right, a burst of pace to beat two defenders, and then a curling shot into the far corner. It was stuff right out of Lionel Messi’s box of tricks.
Well, now, it was Lamine Yamal’s trademark.
Yamal grinned widely as he sprinted to the corner flag with pure joy written over his face. He got to the corner flag and held his chin, listening to the silence of the stadium and the roar of the away Barcelona fans.
The Balaidos was silenced, but that was just the start.
In the 19th minute of the game, Sam, unselfish, played provider as a perfectly timed flick sent Raphinha through on goal, and the Brazilian finished low and hard.
By halftime, it was 3–0, with Pedri adding his name to the scoresheet after a sharp exchange with Gavi in the box.
The second half became a show. Yamal scored again, this time from a Raphinha cross, before Sam finally took a chance himself, collecting De Jong’s lofted ball, turning his marker inside out, and smashing it into the top netting.
The away fans were losing their minds as they watched their team dismantle their enemies in their own ground. They roared till their voices cracked.
They roared again as Barca eased off in the final minutes, but Celta still couldn’t breathe. Even in cruise control, the Catalans looked like a force of nature.
[FULL-TIME: Celta Vigo 0-5 Barcelona]
Lamine Yamal won the man of the match award with 2 goals, 1 assist, and his relentless creativity all game.
...
Real Madrid vs Getafe – Santiago Bernabéu.
In Madrid, Xabi Alonso’s men continued their own surge. Barcelona’s dominant win in away ground lit a fuse on their asses, and they didn’t play with their food at all. They thoroughly dismantled their opponents in 90 minutes at the Bernabeu.
Vinícius struck early, giving Madrid the lead. Bellingham added a header, also in the first half, and then Mbappé finished things with a late breakaway goal.
[FULL-TIME: Real Madrid 3-0 Getafe]
Vinicius Junior won another man of the match award. He opened the scoring, and his movement terrorized Getafe’s left flank all game.
...
UEFA Champions League – Matchday 5.
Marseille vs Barcelona – Stade Vélodrome.
It was Champions League night again, and this time it was in France.
The French giants had prepared for weeks, knowing that stopping Barcelona at home could ignite their European campaign. The fans came well-prepared.
The Stade Vélodrome was a wall of noise on matchday; smoke, flags, and chants rolling down from the stands in waves.
The stadium was a literal firecracker on the night.
From kickoff, riding the energy of their fans, Marseille pressed hard, snapping into tackles and denying space. They aimed to beat Barca at their own intensity game, but led by Sam, Flick’s Barca had a different bite to them.
They couldn’t score, but they didn’t let their opponents score either.
Yes, their usual fluidity was stifled. Yes, Sam was tightly marked, Raphinha and Yamal crowded out, but they didn’t roll over in defeat.
They fought.
The first half was tense, gritty, and goalless. Sam had one sight of goal in the 38th minute but dragged his shot wide.
Hansi Flick’s halftime talk, however, was simple.
"Keep running. The wall will crack, trust me".
The players did just that. They trusted their coach and entered the second half ready to fight for 45 more minutes.
FWEEE!
And then... the eruption!
In the 46th minute, barely after the restart, Raphinha cut inside and played a diagonal ball to Sam, who spun away from his marker, slid into the box, and drilled low past Pau López to stun the Stade Velodrome.
1-0 Barcelona!
Barcelona fans in the away stands lost it as they celebrated wildly. But that was just the start.
In the 53rd minute, Pedri found Sam again, this time with a lofted pass. The Nigerian chested it down and volleyed into the bottom corner. 2–0.
In the 61st minute, a lightning Barcelona counter tore Marseille open like a hot knife through butter. Gavi won the ball, fed Yamal, who raced forward and squared across the box for Sam to tap in. Hat-trick!
The stadium noise dipped into stunned murmurs. Marseille were rattled.
73rd minute. From a corner, Sam timed his run perfectly, meeting Raphinha’s delivery with a towering header into the top net. Four!
And then, the exclamation point.
84th minute. Sam picked the ball near midfield, and said. ’F*ck it, I’ll do it alone!’
From the halfway line, Sam surged forward with the ball, dancing past two defenders with silky flair, and from the edge of the box, rifled a shot that screamed into the top-left corner like a missile.
Five... five f*cking goals in one game!
By the time Hansi Flick subbed him off in the 87th minute, the Marseille crowd were beyond stunned, they were literally horrified. They were humbled.
They gave a reluctant standing ovation as he trudged off the pitch like he owned it, their applause a testament to witnessing something beyond the mundane, something historic.
[FULL-TIME: Marseille 0-5 Barcelona]
Was it ever in question after such an explosion? With 5 goals, Sam snatched the man of the match award, creating a Champions League night for the ages.
No fan who attended the game regretted the decision.
It was money well-spent.
...
Galatasaray vs Real Madrid – RAMS Park, Istanbul.
Madrid’s task was just as hostile in Istanbul. The Turkish champions came at them in waves, feeding off the deafening atmosphere.
Galatasaray struck first through Mauro Icardi in the 18th minute, but Madrid steadied. And once it was steady, they struck. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s pinpoint cross allowed Mbappé to equalize before halftime.
In the second half, Bellingham dictated the game, playing with audacious ease and charisma as he set up Vinícius for the go-ahead goal and later played a through ball for substitute Brahim Diaz to seal the win.
[FULL-TIME: Galatasaray 1-3 Real Madrid]
Jude Bellingham won the man of the match award. He had 1 assist, but under pressure, he got the midfield under total control.
Barcelona and Madrid now sat atop the Champions League league-phase table with 15 points from five games; five wins from five.
Europe was beginning to accept the inevitable; both Spanish giants were here to dominate.
And yet, whispers of an eventual collision in the latter stages grew louder.
