Because the FBI arrived on time, the armored vehicle wasn't breached by the robbers and the guards inside were still safe within the thick, bullet-proof vehicle, temporarily out of danger.
The robbers' vehicle was parked diagonally in front of the armored truck, creating a makeshift barricade between them as they confronted Harten and his team.
Jimmy parked his police car behind Harten's location, crawled out bent over from the driver's side, opened the trunk, and retrieved a spare M16.
Jimmy was part of the Support Team, his police car always stocked with rifles. Having practiced extensively, he had switched from the standard shotgun to an M16.
Jimmy bent down next to Harten and asked, "Harten, anyone injured?"
Harten, without looking at Jimmy and continuing to return fire with his pistol, responded, "Not for the moment."
Jimmy fired two shots towards the robbers' position and ducked back, "Didn't you all bring any weapons? Why are all of you just using pistols?"
Harten: "FK, it was too sudden, didn't have time to prepare, all the gear and Bullet-Proof Vests are in the trunk."
Jimmy was speechless. This was a significant downfall of the FBI, they typically operated in plain clothes, whereas, as a police officer, Jimmy always went out fully armed with a Bullet-Proof Vest. But why hadn't Harten and his team equipped themselves while in the vehicle for so long? They were seriously risking their lives.
Jimmy: "I'll go suppress them from the side. You guys quickly grab your gear."
Jimmy ducked and dashed to a highway bridge pillar nearby, offsetting his angle of attack slightly from Harten's position, firing at the robbers from the side, but due to the angle, most bullets hit the SUV and armored vehicle, missing the robbers.
However, Jimmy's gunfire noticeably drew the robbers' attention. Given a choice between facing an M16 rifle and some pistols, the robbers understandably prioritized Jimmy's side; even from behind the pillar, Jimmy could hear bullets hitting it and whizzing by.
Finally, Harten and his team found a moment to open the trunk, pulled out two bags, and then huddled behind the wheel hub to put on their Bullet-Proof Vests.
Since Harten had his team spread out on two sides, Jimmy had no idea what was happening on the other side; he was too rushed earlier and hadn't synced to the same radio channel as the FBI.
"A28 calling the dispatch center, when will backup arrive? All robbers are armed with M16s, I'm here restraining them with a few FBI agents, we can't return fire effectively."
"SWAT has already been dispatched, LRPD has also arranged for support, please hold on a bit longer."
Jimmy didn't respond, instead he leaned out again, aimed his rifle at the robbers, and continued to fire. This time he was fortunate—an apparent bullet struck one of the robbers. The man staggered backwards, then got up again, presumably saved by his Bullet-Proof Vest.
Jimmy was now about 50 meters away from the robbers. At this distance, his pistol was practically useless, and the robbers' bullet-proof vests seemed to be reinforced with plates; otherwise, an M16 rifle bullet would have penetrated them. Standard vests without plates are only bullet-resistant against pistol rounds, definitely not against rifle bullets.
These robbers were indeed fully equipped, with rifles and heavy-duty bullet-proof vests, damn. Jimmy's fixed-target shooting with the M16 was not bad, but in actual combat, he could never achieve the same accuracy he did at the range. His several shots from beside the bridge piers only served to harass them.
Fortunately, during the time Jimmy was stalling, Harten and his team had also put on their vests and picked up their weapons.
With Harten and two others, plus Jimmy, the four men finally managed to suppress the robbers. All three robbers ducked behind the car and stopped exchanging fire with Jimmy and his team.
Soon, the sound of sirens approached from behind; the LRPD had finally arrived at the scene. They parked their cars next to Jimmy's police car and joined the fray with their rifles.
The arrival of reinforcements greatly reduced the pressure on Jimmy's side. He glanced at the position of the robbers' car, lay down on the ground, and aimed at a robber's feet under the car. With a stationary target and sufficient time to aim, Jimmy's first shot hit its mark. The robber, initially crouching, now lay on the ground. Seeing his chance, Jimmy aimed at the robber's head on the ground and fired, killing him instantly.
Watching their partner suddenly fall, the remaining two robbers were frightened and bent down to run to the side of the armored car, which was bullet-proof. Jimmy's side, including the police and FBI, had to shift their positions as their original spots no longer offered a clear shot at the robbers.
Jimmy did not follow the others; instead, he took a different route toward the SUV behind the armored car. The remaining two robbers were probably manageable by the FBI and LRPD, who could at least keep them suppressed with firepower. With one robber down, Jimmy had significantly relieved their pressure.
The situation on the other side was similar to Harten's earlier encounter; three people were pinned down by M16 fire and couldn't rise, and even after two more police cars from LRPD arrived, the situation didn't improve much.
Jimmy approached from the side, and once he had a clear line of fire, he ambushed from behind, instantly killing one man by targeting the head, since those three, like the ones Harten faced, were also in heavy-duty vests probably with plates judging by their outlines.
After Jimmy fired and killed one, the other two were startled and immediately dropped to the ground then rolled to the other side, evading Jimmy's line of fire, causing his subsequent shots to miss.
Jimmy hadn't brought a spare magazine, and his M16 was now out of bullets, effectively a club. He slung the rifle over his shoulder and drew his revolver.
Jimmy moved along the side, hiding behind roadside obstacles, inching closer to the armored car. When he was about 20 meters away, he entered the accurate range of his revolver.
Using his revolver, Jimmy aimed from the side and activated "Heart Eye" to scan the area. Moving a bit closer, he spotted three robbers behind the armored car. There should have been four, but one wasn't within Heart Eye's or his sight range. Jimmy decided to deal with those he could see first.
Jimmy lay on the ground, holding his pistol in front, and aimed under the armored car. The robbers on the side didn't stop moving. Hoping they would pause, Jimmy waited to fire at such a small target as a leg.
When one robber's leg appeared and paused, Jimmy immediately opened fire. Bullet-proof vests did not protect legs, and the robber was about to fall but managed to steady himself by leaning on the car, staggering only briefly. Jimmy showed no mercy and emptied his revolver at the visible legs under the car, then quickly climbed onto the engine hood of a nearby car.
If Jimmy could lie down and shoot, so could the robber. Jimmy didn't want to be on the receiving end of a bullet from under a car while reloading.
