Catherine walked into the hospital room, her gaze evasive. In truth, she hadn't figured out how to face Wei Yumeng, especially since she hadn't genuinely acknowledged her mistakes.
This so-called visit to apologize was merely a superficial gesture. She never felt there was a need for her to bow down to Wei Yumeng.
"Well, I actually came to apologize for what happened last time."
Wei Yumeng looked away somewhat unnaturally. The reality was that she didn't feel she owed Wei Yumeng an apology, but in Wei Yumeng's eyes, she merely perceived Catherine as being a bit embarrassed.
"Whether you apologize or not is irrelevant; the harm has already been done to me. However, there's one thing I can ask, if that's okay?"
Catherine looked up at Wei Yumeng. "What do you want to know?"
"I want to know the reason you targeted me before," Wei Yumeng asked, her gaze earnest as she looked at Catherine.
Catherine hadn't expected Wei Yumeng to ask this question so directly. Yet, how could she reveal her true identity to Wei Yumeng?
Wei Yumeng tilted her head, looking inquisitive. Catherine had no choice but to offer an explanation.
"It's because I felt my mother was being too kind to you recently. I'm her daughter, after all. How could I stand for that?" Catherine said, pouting slightly with clear displeasure, as if this matter truly bothered her.
Hearing this, Wei Yumeng had to admit that if this were the reason, it was somewhat understandable.
However, it was precisely because of this that she needed to make Catherine understand how much Song Lijun cared about her.
"You don't need to worry about this at all. As you said, Mrs. Feng is your birth mother. Just now, for your sake, she even knelt down to Mo Han and me, which is why we forgave you."
Catherine was taken aback by this. She truly hadn't expected Song Lijun to go to such lengths for her. But even if she had, what did it prove? She wasn't her biological daughter. Perhaps Song Lijun was just trying to preserve the family.
Just that, nothing more! Catherine told herself silently.
Despite her inner thoughts, she put on an act of being moved. "Mom actually..."
As she spoke, she bit her lower lip, and tears seemed to well up in her eyes, held back with effort.
"I'm sorry, I truly know I was wrong. Please forgive me."
Catherine bowed deeply to Wei Yumeng.
Wei Yumeng turned her face away, her expression cool. "I can't say I forgive you. I just hope you won't do these foolish things anymore. Everyone has a chance to change; it depends on whether you're willing."
Seeing Catherine like this, Wei Yumeng felt she was like a child who had strayed from the right path. She hoped that in the future, Catherine would truly turn over a new leaf.
After chatting with Wei Yumeng for a while longer, Catherine finally left.
The moment she stepped out of Wei Yumeng's hospital room, the kindness she had feigned towards Wei Yumeng vanished completely, replaced by mockery and a cold sneer. How could things between her and Wei Yumeng end so easily?
Just then, Song Lijun, who was nearby, saw Catherine and hurried over.
"Linlin, your father and I have already completed the procedures. We can go home now."
When Catherine looked at Song Lijun, the coldness on her face was gone, replaced by a different demeanor.
"Okay, Mom. Let's go home together." As she spoke, she proactively took the bag from Song Lijun's hand. "Mom, from now on, leave bags and such to us young people."
Song Lijun was somewhat surprised. She hadn't expected Catherine to change so much after visiting Wei Yumeng.
Seeing Song Lijun's lingering look of confusion, Catherine felt a bit embarrassed and explained, "Mom, I know how you pleaded for me. I truly know I was wrong, and I shouldn't have let you do that for me."
Song Lijun blinked slightly at first, then her eyes filled with tenderness. "It's alright. What happened before is in the past. Knowing your intentions makes me very happy. Our Linlin definitely won't be like this again."
After this incident, Catherine indeed restrained herself considerably. At home, she even became a model daughter, doing her best to contribute to the family in any way she could.
"Mom, I'll do the housework today. You rest."
Song Lijun didn't refuse. Looking at Catherine's behavior, she felt even more gratified. After all, her child had finally matured.
They say everything in the world has two sides. It seemed that while this incident had caused their family some unnecessary fright, it had also made Catherine truly realize her own flaws.
What more could Song Lijun ask for now?
Catherine looked at Song Lijun from the side, thinking that older people were indeed easier to fool. A little housework and help were enough to make them let down their guard; it was truly easy.
But as she thought this, for some reason, she recalled what Wei Yumeng had told her.
When Song Lijun had pleaded for her, she had even knelt down to Zhan Mohan and Wei Yumeng for her.
However, she quickly shook her head, trying to dismiss the thought. No matter what, she wasn't Song Lijun's biological daughter; that was an unchangeable fact.
Although her previous attempts had failed, she absolutely would not allow herself to give up just like that. To continue, she needed someone to help her. Alone, in her current situation, it was difficult to do anything.
After all, she was still under scrutiny. Therefore, she needed someone to carry out her next plan on her behalf. This way, even if she didn't appear in person, she could still achieve her goals.
Moreover, even if her scheme were eventually exposed, who could possibly connect her current image of a well-behaved daughter with those plans?
If there was anyone in this world who could be fooled by her endlessly, it would only be Kai.
After tidying up the house, Catherine returned to her room. Although Kai had discovered her plan before, based on Catherine's understanding of him, she was entirely confident she could trick Kai again.
Kai never expected to receive a call from Catherine. After what had happened, he had made thorough preparations.
Since Catherine had no feelings for him, why should he continue to pester her, only to end up in such a state? In the eyes of others, he could only be seen as an idiot.
What's more, he had actually injured Catherine. Catherine would certainly not forgive him, and he would not forgive himself.
Should he leave now? He couldn't bring himself to do it. But Catherine seemed unwilling to see him anymore.
The phone rang for a full minute before Kai slowly picked it up. His mood was complex at this moment, because even knowing everything, the fact that he answered the call meant he couldn't let Catherine go.
"Is there something you need?" Kai's voice was somewhat hoarse and his tone very cold.
