Chapter 53 Escape

The approaching man was the head guard of the Yan family, charging forward on his horse, scattering the startled pedestrians.

The head guard quickly stopped before Sheng Mo Bai's carriage and glared at him, "Young Master Sheng, a clever feint, wasn't it? Having fun playing tricks on people?"

"What are you talking about? I don't understand," Sheng Mo Bai feigned ignorance, looking innocent. "Oh, perhaps the head guard knew I was leaving Kunyang City today and rushed to see me off?"

The head guard's face contorted. He was a veteran of over fifty years and had seen countless battles, yet today he was being toyed with by this young brat, Sheng Mo Bai. If not for his position, he would have loved to punch him a few times. Suppressing his anger, he said, "Enough nonsense. Let's search!"

The soldiers immediately surrounded Sheng Mo Bai's carriage, proving to be more effective than their superior's words, showcasing the Yan family's immense influence in Kunyang City.

Sheng Mo Bai knew protesting was futile. He lifted the curtain and moved aside, "Alright. The Sheng family has always abided by the law. If the officials need to do their duty, we will cooperate. Have you seen clearly?"

Naturally, the soldiers found no one else inside the carriage. However, the head guard was unconvinced. "Please, Young Master Sheng, and everyone in the carriages behind, dismount. We need to conduct a thorough inspection."

Sheng Mo Bai stared at the head guard. The latter did not back down. With everyone watching, Sheng Mo Bai had no choice but to dismount.

The soldiers then swarmed the Sheng family's carriages, examining them from top to bottom, but still found no hidden compartments.

Meanwhile, Yan Jiaojiao held her breath, clutching Rong'er and Dongfang Xu's hands tightly, using her cultivation technique to conceal their breathing. She dared not move.

After a while, Yan Jiaojiao heard a soldier report, "Nothing found."

The head guard was perplexed. He could not believe they had found nothing.

Yan Jiaojiao had no one to rely on in Kunyang City except Sheng Mo Bai. He was convinced that if Yan Jiaojiao intended to leave the city, she would only have a chance if she traveled with Sheng Mo Bai. Therefore, he would not let Sheng Mo Bai leave easily.

"I'll do the inspection!" The head guard dismounted and walked towards Sheng Mo Bai's carriage.

Yan Jiaojiao inwardly cursed her luck. The head guard's cultivation had reached the peak of the Yellow rank. Her concealment technique of the third stage of the Red rank could fool ordinary soldiers, but not him. As soon as the head guard entered the carriage, he would detect their presence!

Sheng Mo Bai was also worried and tried to intervene, but a stern look from the head guard had the soldiers surround him, preventing him from getting close to the carriage. He could only watch helplessly as the head guard propped himself up with one hand and lifted the curtain to enter.

"Heh!" As soon as the head guard entered, he let out a cold laugh, his gaze fixed ominously on the rear wall of the carriage. "Found you..."

They had been discovered!

Yan Jiaojiao's heart leaped into her throat. If she were alone, she might have been able to fight her way out. But with Dongfang Xu and Rong'er, her mind went blank. She could only nervously clench their hands.

The head guard smiled cruelly and slowly drew his saber. The blade gleamed, radiating a chilling aura. It was clearly a weapon stained with countless drops of blood. The head guard raised his saber high and brought it down with a mighty swing!

"Stop!"

Sheng Mo Bai, witnessing this from outside the carriage, shouted in shock. He could no longer care about anything else. He channeled his energy and pushed aside the officials with a few swift moves, lunging towards the carriage.

However, despite his best efforts, he was too far away. The head guard's long saber fell, and with a "crack," the entire rear wall of the carriage was cleaved open!

Sheng Mo Bai's eyes widened in fury. With a blow like that, there would be no survivors!

A wave of grief was about to wash over Sheng Mo Bai when, amidst the exploding debris of the shattered carriage, he saw no one!

This time, not only the head guard was stunned, but Sheng Mo Bai was also dumbfounded – where were they?

It turned out that as the head guard swung his saber, Yan Jiaojiao felt the cold glint approaching. Just as she thought she was certain to die, she was suddenly pulled into a broad, solid embrace. A familiar, faint fragrance filled her senses, and in the next moment, she found herself standing on solid ground.

What was happening?

Yan Jiaojiao, bewildered, turned to look and realized she was standing outside the city walls of Kunyang City, with Dongfang Xu and Rong'er beside her.

Even Xiao Hei, the little black dog, was squatting at her feet without her knowing when. However, from Xiao Hei's gaze, she seemed to detect a hint of disdain?

Dongfang Xu and Rong'er were also very confused by the situation. Seeing the crowd of soldiers and guards within the city walls from a distance, Rong'er exclaimed in surprise, "How did we get out of the city?"

Dongfang Xu, however, felt the thrill of it and clapped his hands in delight. "Wow, this teleportation spell is amazing! It can take three people at once!"

His words hit the nail on the head. Yan Jiaojiao's eyebrows twitched. She looked down at Xiao Hei, the little black dog. The only one with such an ability here seemed to be this extraordinary little beast.

But just now, she felt like a man had taken them. What was going on? Could Xiao Hei transform into a human form?

Even if Xiao Hei transformed, shouldn't a little black dog also be a little boy?

Yan Jiaojiao's mind was filled with questions. Her gaze towards the little black dog became increasingly complex.

Dongfang Cangwu naturally could not ignore such intense scrutiny. He pretended nothing was amiss, lazily raised a paw to scratch his ear, and then lay down again, looking like he just wanted to sleep.

Seeing the little black dog's adorable appearance, Yan Jiaojiao couldn't help but doubt herself. Was she overthinking things?

As she pondered, from the distant city gate, Sheng Mo Bai's carriages began to emerge one by one.

Since the head guard had failed to find Yan Jiaojiao even after splitting the carriage, Sheng Mo Bai took the opportunity to question and reprimand him. The onlookers also took the chance to vent their dissatisfaction with the search. Enraged, the head guard's face turned ashen, but he had no further reason to stop Sheng Mo Bai and could only let the Sheng convoy leave Kunyang City.

Although Sheng Mo Bai was puzzled by Yan Jiaojiao's whereabouts, he could only proceed. Who would have thought that after traveling a hundred meters, he would see Yan Jiaojiao and the others waiting there!

"How exactly did you get out?" Sheng Mo Bai asked, surprised but relieved. "I didn't expect you to have such skills, Jiaojiao."

Yan Jiaojiao replied, "It wasn't me. I had help from a powerful expert. I couldn't figure out who it was."

As Yan Jiaojiao spoke, her gaze fell upon the little black dog on the ground.

Dongfang Cangwu pretended not to hear, closed his eyes, and continued to rest.

Sheng Mo Bai smiled and teased, "I knew it. Jiaojiao is so lovable, even in such a situation, someone is silently helping."

The little black dog's ears twitched. He turned his head to face away from Sheng Mo Bai, thinking, *Likes my ass. These words are truly unlucky.*
