"You don't know, do you, that Mr. Qin used to have psychological problems?" Floyd asked.
Yu He's brows furrowed slightly, and she shook her head.
She had already cured Qin Beiting's chronic severe headaches caused by poisoning; as for psychological problems, if she had to say anything, his possessiveness was too strong.
Seeing this, Floyd confirmed his suspicions. "Then being with him is really too dangerous for you."
"What's wrong with him?" Yu He asked.
"Mr. Qin Beiting should have told you about this," Floyd said, taking out a tablet from his briefcase, pulling up some information, and showing it to Yu He.
"About sixteen or seventeen years ago, Mr. Qin Yongyi approached my teacher, Skinner, to conduct psychological counseling and treatment for Mr. Qin Beiting. The diagnosis at the time was bipolar disorder and paranoid personality disorder," Floyd said.
The report was entirely in English, but Yu He read it fluently. When she saw the possible causes listed as environmental changes, being ostracized, insecurity, and survival crises, her heart ached. Around sixteen or seventeen years ago, not long after Qin Beiting was brought back to the Qin family.
She knew he had never had a good time in the Qin family, but she never imagined he had been tormented to the point of mental distortion.
"His condition improved considerably after Mr. Qin Yongyi's daughter was born. By the time he was twelve, his illness had transitioned from severe to mild, and he recovered remarkably well. My teacher said you are Mr. Qin Beiting's cure," Floyd said.
He had learned some details about the Qin family's mistaken identity from Qi Nan.
Upon hearing this, she glanced at the ring on her left hand and recalled Qin Beiting's words from the previous night, her heart beating heavily.
"But then, something happened in the Qin family, and after you disappeared, Mr. Qin Beiting's condition worsened. My teacher put in a lot of effort to stabilize his emotions."
Floyd continued, "My teacher has been keeping track of his condition. He was supposed to have a follow-up check-up every two to three years. The last one was last year, but Mr. Qin Beiting didn't contact my teacher. My teacher is elderly and not in good health, so he couldn't come to see Mr. Qin Beiting himself. He entrusted this matter to me, hoping I would continue to monitor Mr. Qin Beiting's condition after his passing."
Yu He finished reading the case file. The situation was largely as he described. The records of prescription medications had stopped in recent years, and the follow-up records indicated stable condition. The last follow-up was four years ago.
Floyd took a sip of coffee and asked, "Recently, have you noticed any overly extreme behavior from Mr. Qin Beiting?"
"His possessiveness is exceptionally strong," Yu He thought of this first.
Floyd looked as if he had expected it. "As I suspected. His current situation might not just be signs of relapse, but the illness has already recurred."
Yu He's brows furrowed tightly. No wonder his control and possessiveness had been so severe lately; he was sick.
"Miss Yu, for your own safety, I advise you to try and leave him," Floyd suggested sincerely.
Yu He stroked the ring on her left hand with her right. "As long as he consistently attends his appointments, his condition can remain stable, right?" She was willing to accompany him through his treatment.
"Yes," Floyd replied. "But his possessiveness towards you has reached a pathological level. Yesterday afternoon, Mr. Qin threatened me with a gun to alter your memories."
Yu He: !!!
Floyd: "This is also the main reason I asked to speak with you. Mr. Qin's current condition is very poor. If this continues, I'm afraid he might harm you."
Yu He thought she had misheard. "He made you alter my memories?!" Her memories, which she had been trying to recall, had been changed?! No wonder she had felt like she had forgotten something yesterday! This could be crucial memories of finding the culprit who framed her adoptive father for prison. How could Qin Beiting allow it to be changed!
"I imagine the memories you were trying to recall were not pleasant for either you or Mr. Qin," Floyd inferred. "Mr. Qin feared losing you again, which would worsen his condition and lead to paranoid behavior. For your personal safety, I advised you to distance yourself from him. I worry he might do something even more extreme than altering memories."
Yu He's mind was in a jumble. She neither agreed nor refused, only saying, "Thank you."
Seeing her pale face, Floyd didn't press further. "I'll be staying in the capital for a while. If Mr. Qin has any issues, you can come to me directly."
"Okay."
Yu He returned to the clinic in a daze. Seeing her absentmindedness, Grandma Yu asked, "Nannan, did something happen?"
"It's nothing," Yu He replied, snapping back to attention. "I won't be going to the apartment complex tonight. After dinner, how about you and Brother Wei go for a walk?"
"Alright, you focus on your work. Don't stay up too late, and get some rest," Grandma Yu advised. "If anything happens, you must tell me. Grandma is always here for you."
Yu He felt a warmth spread through her. "Mhm, I will."
As soon as the clinic closed and everyone left, Yu He and the little piggy were the only ones left in the courtyard, waiting for Qin Beiting to return. To keep her mind from wandering, Yu He took out the file bag Qi Lin had given her to distract herself. The file bag contained the secret surgery contract signed by the Huang family and Qi Ye Wen, and a box of audio tapes.
Yu He found an old tape recorder and tested it; the tape still played. The content was a female voice reading the contract, and this voice was precisely the same as the one on the memory card she had been searching for! Yu He immediately retrieved the memory card and inserted it into her computer to play and compare. Although the female voice on the memory card spoke very little, it was clear that it was the same person as the voice on the tape – the final recording of Madam Huang's voice before the surgery!
She had finally found the mastermind behind her adoptive mother's death, but Yu He wasn't particularly happy at the moment. It was because she inadvertently discovered that the style and usage of a piece of code within the erased recordings were familiar. Her heart sank. She found the exclusive code that Li Sichen had given her earlier and, in his summary of the Vulcan issues, found an identical piece of code! This was code written by Vulcan! This meant that Qin Beiting had erased the recordings on the memory card!? The thought of this possibility weighed heavily on Yu He, leaving her feeling cold, as if she had fallen into an ice cave. After a long while, she called Li Sichen. "Master, can you do me a favor?"
"Tsk, when you need something, you call me Master. When you don't, you won't even have a meal with me," Li Sichen teased. "Tell me, what is it? Something only I can do, something Qin Beiting can't."
"You're part of the Starfall organization, right?" Yu He asked.
Li Sichen didn't deny it. "And then?"
Yu He: "Can you help me look up a photo?"
The photo she had taken from Qin Yonghao and given to Qin Beiting had not been returned. Yu He described the scene and time frame on the photo in detail to Li Sichen.
After listening, Li Sichen said, "Alright, I'll check it out first."
"Thanks." Just as Yu He hung up, she heard Qin Beiting return to the courtyard.
