Chapter 191: Chapter 191: I Suspect She Knows
Mason Wilson looked at his wife with a complex expression and said, "Ophelia is closer to Emerie. That’s because Emerie’s health condition means she can never have children, so she places her maternal love onto Ophelia."
Mason Wilson still couldn’t believe the daughter he’s cherished for so many years wasn’t his biological child.
Sophie Wilson saved Clarissa’s life, but is it not too absurd to disregard his twenty-plus years of father-daughter relationship with Ophelia based just on her few words?
Clarissa Taylor looked at Mason Wilson, who was vigorously denying this, sighed lightly, and asked, "Are you worried that Sophie covets your identity?"
The Wilson Clan’s enterprise now is in a semi-hands-off stage by her father-in-law, so Mason’s suspicion is not surprising to her.
"It’s essential to be wary of others, Clarissa, you don’t know what kind of people are out there," Mason worried that his simple-minded wife would be deceived.
Clarissa was born into a scholarly family and has always been drawing, and the people she interacts with are very simple.
She didn’t know how chaotic the world outside was, how much deception and darkness existed.
"Don’t you think Ophelia seems really fake?" Clarissa said, feeling somewhat uncomfortable herself, since that was her daughter.
She felt a sense of estrangement with Ophelia, not close like she imagined a mother-daughter relationship would be, but she had nevertheless worked hard to be close to Ophelia and loved her for over twenty years.
"Fake?" Mason hadn’t anticipated his wife would view their daughter this way, "Why do you say that? Is there some misunderstanding between you two?"
Even in the close relationship between parents and children, sometimes misunderstandings can occur due to communication issues.
Clarissa smiled bitterly and said, "The simplest example is, I almost had a car accident, and Sophie saved me. When you arrived at the hospital, did you hear what Emerie said?"
"She was having afternoon tea with Ophelia and rushed over as soon as she got the call," Clarissa paused disappointedly and said, "But when I saw Ophelia, her makeup was flawless, even her lipstick was applied perfectly."
"When having a meal, no woman would go and touch up her makeup," Clarissa said, feeling bitter at heart.
Although she felt Ophelia always seemed to have a barrier with her, not as close as the mother-daughter relationship she imagined, she was nonetheless whole-heartedly devoted to Ophelia.
The daughter whom she had devotedly loved, knowing that she had almost been in a car accident at the hospital, wasn’t the first to rush over but instead went to touch up her makeup!
How could she not feel saddened?
"This is just a small example, there are too many such little things in daily life," as Clarissa spoke, she saw Mason’s face was also not looking good.
Indeed, what parent would want to hear that the child they’ve cherished for decades is not their own?
"This is why I feel I can’t get close to Ophelia. She always seems perfect but reveals her intentions in the details, which makes me uncomfortable," Clarissa sighed lightly.
Perhaps it’s her scholarly background, perhaps her overly sensitive nature, but she truly cared about these small details.
"Why don’t we talk to Ophelia?" Mason hesitantly asked.
"No way!" Clarissa immediately rejected, "We can’t tell Ophelia!"
"I suspect she knows she’s not our biological daughter; otherwise, why would she help Grace against Sophie?"
