Chapter 53 The Top-Tier Terrors in the Resurgence of Horror 13

Xing Yuan responded outwardly, but paid no mind to Yuan Li's words.

She wasn't human and didn't feel fatigue. Moreover, if she could finish her work early, she might be able to gain her elder sister's attention and trust quickly.

With this thought, Xing Yuan was full of energy. She even used her innate divine abilities to read files. With the immense bug's enhancement, Xing Yuan could read at lightning speed. Before nightfall, she had finished the pile of documents.

In the interim, Su Yue came out to ask Yuan Li to find a document, which Xing Yuan proactively handled. Xing Yuan thought with a touch of childishness that her elder sister should be protected by her, and she would block anyone who might covet her elder sister.

Although Su Yue felt that the new intern in her team was a bit too enthusiastic, she didn't think much of it, merely attributing it to excitement from meeting her idol for the first time. She recalled how enthusiastic she had been when she first joined the Ghost Extermination Division.

"You're done already?"

When Xing Yuan handed her sorted files to Yuan Li, Yuan Li's face was filled with disbelief. Then, with a hint of suspicion, she flipped through the files Xing Yuan had organized, and then looked at Xing Yuan as if she were a monster.

These were the documents she was supposed to spend the next three days on, yet this newcomer had finished organizing them in less than a day? And after reviewing them, Yuan Li found the reasoning for each file's classification to be sound, clearly indicating research had been done. It was precisely this that made it even harder to accept.

"Xiao Yi, you read so fast. Do you have any secrets you can share?" Yuan Li asked Xing Yuan with a face full of curiosity.

Xing Yuan paused. How could she explain that it was talent, something Yuan Li couldn't learn? No, that would be too hurtful!

After a long period of contemplation, Xing Yuan said with a face full of innocence, "Perhaps it's because I've read many study materials before and familiarized myself with some special regions before coming here, which is why I could be so fast!"

Yuan Li looked at Xing Yuan with envy. Was this the difference between a genius and an ordinary person?

Yuan Li accepted the fact, but her heart still felt like it had been hit by ten thousand critical blows. She said listlessly, "Then, please deliver these documents to Captain Su's office!"

"Mhm!" Xing Yuan suppressed the surge of joy in her heart and nodded demurely, then quickly walked towards Su Yue's office with the documents.

Xing Yuan knocked on the door. After hearing a "Please come in" from inside, she quickly entered and immediately saw Su Yue sitting at her desk, writing and drawing on some documents.

The setting sun cast its light upon her, making her appear sacred and beautiful, like an angel who had strayed into the human world.

After placing the documents down, Xing Yuan stared at Su Yue blankly, the thought of imprisoning her rising in her heart once more. A flower that bloomed only before her, versus a flower admired by others in a garden – Xing Yuan clearly preferred the former.

Su Yue initially thought it was Yuan Li coming to deliver documents and paid no attention, assuming she would place them properly. However, soon, Su Yue felt a gaze lingering on her face. When she looked up, she saw Xing Yuan standing before her, lost in thought.

Su Yue frowned. "Why are you here? Where is Yuan Li?"

"Yuan Li jie isn't feeling well, so I came to deliver them for her," Xing Yuan said, lowering her head quickly.

"Alright, you've delivered the items. You can leave now!" Although Su Yue didn't dislike Xing Yuan, for some reason, she always felt Xing Yuan was a bit strange. Sometimes, the aura around her made her feel close, while at other times, she felt a profound sense of unfamiliarity.

"Mhm, okay!" Xing Yuan nodded and turned to leave.

Normally, Xing Yuan’s personality would have led her to pester Su Yue, trying to find ways to make her elder sister remember her better. However, she had clearly felt the resentment within the original body surge uncontrollably the moment she saw her elder sister. This feeling of losing control made Xing Yuan dare not linger.

Xing Yuan hurriedly bid farewell to the members of the Ghost Extermination Division and found a secluded spot to meditate, attempting to locate the source of her loss of control.

During Xing Yuan's investigation, the originally vast black mist seemed to mutate, emitting a red glow. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a peculiar red thread. As Xing Yuan's power delved deeper, the red thread seemed to come alive, actively evading Xing Yuan's probing.

Xing Yuan's expression grew serious. This red thread was clearly not something good. She wondered if it had always existed within the original host or if someone had intentionally placed it there. If it was the latter, then the original host's background might be even more extraordinary than she imagined.

Xing Yuan attempted to extract the red thread but discovered it had already merged with the black mist. Even if it could be removed, the original host's body would be annihilated. Xing Yuan reluctantly abandoned this idea and instead created a prison for the red thread to confine it. Although it was a temporary solution, it was sufficient for what Xing Yuan intended to do, as she wouldn't be staying in this world for long anyway.

When Xing Yuan opened her eyes again, it was already the next day.

Xing Yuan stretched, loosening her stiff body from sitting for too long, and began a new day.

Given Xing Yuan's feat yesterday, Yuan Li again asked her to help sort files. After Xing Yuan had utilized the bug for several consecutive days, she successfully cleared the backlog of files that had been accumulating in the Ghost Extermination Division for many days.

Su Yue was also very pleased to have such an efficient expert join the division. This would allow them more time to investigate crime scenes and capture ghosts.

One day, Su Yue solemnly announced a grim incident to everyone. "Recently, there have been many murder cases in the city. You've all heard about them, haven't you? The victims are all adult males, and their deaths are all the same – sudden death! That is to say, there are no visible injuries on their bodies."

Su Yue then brought up the images from the case files. What greeted them were faces wearing smiles. "These are all the deceased victims! Logically, upon receiving such cases, our Ghost Extermination Division should respond as quickly as possible. However, these deaths are truly bizarre."

"We've already sent professional personnel to investigate, but they couldn't detect any unusual aura."

"Could it be that it wasn't a ghost's doing? I heard some drugs can cause victims to exhibit such phenomena!" Hu Bing raised a question.

"Well said! This is precisely why we delayed our response!" Su Yue praised Hu Bing, then displayed the hospital test results. "But the examination results show that there are no residual drugs in these individuals' bodies! Because this matter has had a significant impact, orders have been given from above for us to investigate personally."

"So, everyone go back and prepare yourselves! This is likely to be a tough battle," Su Yue said sternly. Based on her years of experience, if this was indeed the work of a ghost, then its power would definitely not be weak.
