Chapter 166: Chapter 125: The Cheng Family of Beijing (Part 2)
In the dead of night, the old lady’s cries startled the entire family, and everyone hurriedly ran toward the main house. Just as they were about to push the door open, they heard Mr. Cheng shout, "You all quickly get the car ready to take your mom to the hospital immediately."
Cheng Sijin, the eldest son of the Cheng Family, didn’t even bother to dress properly as he quickly ran to find the car keys. The eldest daughter-in-law rushed to her room to grab two blankets, closely following Mr. Cheng as they ran outside. She forcefully ignored the coat handed over by her son without saying a word and followed them to the car, wrapping the blankets tightly around the old lady and Mr. Cheng. "Mom, don’t get agitated, breathe in and out, that’s right. Mom, don’t worry, whatever the problem is, we’ll figure it out together. You have two sons; there’s nothing we can’t handle. If the Cheng Family can’t handle it, I’ll kneel down and beg my dad for help. You’ll see, everything will be easily resolved. Mom, you have to live a long life and be with us. I’m still waiting for you to help the younger ones start their families."
Mr. Cheng noticed his wife’s complexion improving a bit and sank into his seat, wiping the sweat off his brow after a moment. "Didn’t I say you shouldn’t get agitated? Don’t worry, I’ll start the investigation first thing in the morning and tell you as soon as I have any news. You can’t speak now even if you want to. Don’t worry, once we confirm things, we can visit your sister and brother-in-law together. Very soon, I promise you, we’ll go see them soon. Just breathe, don’t rush. If you hurry, you really won’t be able to face your godfather and godmother. You should at least take a proper look at that child, right? I’ll personally investigate tomorrow. We’ve waited decades; one more day isn’t urgent."
Cheng Sijin didn’t react upon hearing this. He knew that sooner or later, he would find out. For now, his mom’s health was the priority. He drove quickly to the military hospital entrance and shouted, "Someone come quickly, there’s an emergency."
Having said this, he directly carried the old lady inside while running and instructing his wife, "Quickly find Doctor Huang and have him come over immediately."
The Cheng Family’s eldest daughter-in-law, following her husband’s words, hurriedly changed direction and ran to the duty room to make a phone call. Noticing Mr. Cheng walking unsteadily, she quickly shouted, "Dad, please sit down first. Mom will be fine. Let me make the call first." She shouted this as she ran far.
With everything chaotically arranged, the old lady had been administered a sedative and closed her eyes to sleep.
Cheng Sijin shivered and saw that his wife was also not properly dressed in her rush. He turned to Mr. Cheng and said, "Dad, don’t worry, the doctor said mom was just overly emotional; her health is fine. You should lie down and rest. I’ll go back to give everyone peace of mind and return later. Do you need me to bring anything back?"
Mr. Cheng quickly waved them to go back, "Hurry back home and remember to drink some ginger tea. You don’t need to come tonight, and we’ll come early tomorrow to take care of your mom. She must stay for at least two days this time. It really scared me."
Cheng Sijin didn’t say much upon hearing this, gently closing the door with his wife and breathing a sigh of relief, "Luckily, it’s not serious. Take a day off tomorrow to see how things are. I’ll come to take care of it at night, and during the day, it’s up to you. I worry the kids aren’t careful enough for the elderly."
"There’s nothing tough about it; it’s what I’m supposed to do. I’ll handle both day and night, and you focus on your work. We agreed, you better not steal my credit."
When Cheng Sijin returned to the hospital room, it was already 2 a.m. He slowly pushed the door open and saw Mr. Cheng sound asleep outside, with his service soldier having arrived to stand guard. Seeing him come in, the soldier Xiao Chen was about to salute, but he quickly motioned for him to sleep as well. There was no need to guard the high-class ward in the military hospital.
Finally, he tiptoed inside and cautiously sat by the bed, watching his mother’s face filled with sorrow as she slept. Thinking about the night’s events and what his father had said in the car, he guessed that his cousin had finally been found. It was truly fortunate. For the child who had vanished back then, his mother had cried countless times. In the early years, she would ask the guards at the Big Courtyard’s entrance if anyone was looking for her almost every day. Over the years, she’d slowly lost hope, and every year on their aunt’s family’s death anniversary, she’d cry to the point that she couldn’t breathe.
Looking at the grey hair on his mother’s head, he recalled how she used to tell him as a child that he had the best and most handsome brother in the world, leading him to always think he was the second eldest son. When playing with his friends, he’d claim their family had three brothers. As he grew up, his mother no longer mentioned it, but whenever preparing his clothes, there were always two sets. Sometimes she’d touch the clothes and silently cry, kneeling at the grave during worship, always blaming herself and addressing their sister and brother-in-law with every word. So many years filled with tears, and fortunately, they had found him. He wondered if there was something else that had stirred her emotions to the point of losing control. Could there be another reason?
Cheng Sijin stayed awake all night, quietly sitting there, accompanying the old lady, his thoughts messily scattered as he pondered too much. He vigorously rubbed his face and stood up to stretch a bit.
From outside came the sound of Mr. Cheng getting up. He lightly left the room and closed the door, seeing his father already awake. "Dad, do you have anything you’d like me to do? If it’s inconvenient for you to go, let me do it."
Mr. Cheng could tell that his eldest son had kept vigil all night for his mother, "No need, I’ll handle the investigation. You’re too lowly ranked to gather anything. Head home early and get some rest."
Cheng Sijin raised an eyebrow in surprise, noticing his dad had no intention of saying more, so he went along with him, "I’m fine, still young. I’ll go back once the kids’ mom arrives."
