Chapter 21 False Alarm?
Hao Ren wasn't sure what he was feeling as Vivian welcomed him into the house. He sat down on the sofa in the center of the living room and saw the two abnormal creatures standing in front of him like students who had made a mistake. Vivian's face was full of embarrassment, while Lily's face was a mix of embarrassment and a hint of shame. "Sorry, landlord," Lily said. "That winged thing suddenly flew back, and I was so surprised that I forgot to call you..."
Gunr, oblivious to the situation, rubbed against Hao Ren's leg. This shameless creature was the most carefree member of the household. It had no idea what had happened in the past few hours and only knew to purr contentedly as it rubbed against its master's trousers.
Hao Ren waved his hand, and the two superwomen sat down in front of him. For some reason, this scene filled Hao Ren with a sense of pride. *Even though my life is a mess, my head is in a fog, and my future is uncertain, at least I look pretty impressive at this moment.* He thought, *Look at these legendary creatures like werewolves and vampires being respectful in front of me...* But Hao Ren only indulged in this self-satisfaction for a moment. He knew that Lily and Vivian were just showing normal politeness and a bit of apology. It was just that with their races, Hao Ren felt a bit disoriented.
"What happened to you this afternoon? Why did you suddenly fly out?" Hao Ren asked. Thinking of the "job" he had just taken on, he felt obligated to understand the actions of these abnormal creatures in his house so that he could explain things to Raven 12345 in case of any accidents.
As an ordinary person, Hao Ren knew exactly what his capabilities were. He knew that he couldn't control a werewolf and a vampire on his own in the long run. He had been struggling with how to deal with his future life, and now that a woman claiming to be a god had declared that "world peace is the responsibility of the gods," Hao Ren naturally wanted to treat her as a big backer.
Of course, he also knew that Vivian might not trust him, a human she had only known for a little over a day. So he added, "Don't mind me, I'm just curious. After all, I'm the landlord, and your race is a bit special... I need to know where you've gone if I can't find you, right? Of course, if you don't want to say, that's fine too."
"It's nothing, really," Vivian said, biting her lip as if she had made a decision. "Just a misunderstanding. I thought some annoying guys had tracked me here, and I wanted to go out and deal with them somewhere far away. But it turned out I was just being paranoid."
"Annoying guys?" Hao Ren glanced at Lily. "Other werewolves?"
He had a hunch about what Vivian meant by "this place isn't safe." It seemed this vampire had enemies, the kind of enemies she had feuded with for a long time.
"Not werewolves," Vivian said, glancing at Lily with disdain. "Werewolves have been fighting us for hundreds or thousands of years and have never gained any advantage. Although they're troublesome, they're not a major threat..."
"If you're going to talk about your own affairs, just talk about them. Don't drag me into it!" Lily immediately growled threateningly, licking her claws. "If you still want to fight, we can find a place with plenty of bricks and have a big battle..."
Hao Ren said, "...Can you please stop mentioning your embarrassing brick skills? Give werewolves some face!"
Vivian ignored Lily and explained seriously, "It's demon hunters, or what some people call exorcists."
Hao Ren's mind immediately flashed with a bunch of movie trailers, and he perked up. "Van Helsing and those guys?"
"Don't be ridiculous, that's just in the movies," Vivian said, without a hint of amusement on her face. She seemed very worried. "I'm talking about real demon hunters—guys with only half-human blood, monsters in the eyes of both humans and 'others.' Those demon hunters have been fighting us since the beginning of history, and neither side can completely eliminate the other. At first, they acted alone, but later, I don't know how, they started working with ordinary people through various religious organizations... Ugh, it's a pain in the neck."
Hao Ren couldn't help but touch the few pieces of paper in his pocket. He sincerely wanted to ask a question: Raven 12345 and the Xiling Empire behind her seemed to be asking him to take care of the "others" in his house? But demon hunters sounded like they were fighting to protect humans... *Holy crap, the implications are too deep to think about. It's terrifying if you think about it too much!*
"Landlord? Landlord, what are you thinking about?" Lily's voice brought Hao Ren back from his daze. "Are demon hunters really that powerful? Are they scary?"
Hao Ren decided to wait until he saw Raven 12345 again to ask her about it, because he had just realized that the muddy water he had stepped into was not only muddy but also quite deep. Looking at the curious expression on Lily's face, he casually asked, "You don't know about demon hunters?"
"I don't know," Lily said, scratching her head. "I've never met them, but I've seen them in movies."
Vivian curled her lip. "I don't know how this guy grew up. I chatted with her for a bit and found out she doesn't even have basic common sense. She doesn't know about demon hunters, doesn't know about the different types of vampires, doesn't even know about the different types of werewolves, and doesn't know about the historical feuds between humans and others... She lives like a blank slate, and it's a miracle she's survived this long."
Lily glared at Vivian angrily, but she didn't say anything. Clearly, what Vivian said was true.
"I really don't know these things, it's not my fault," Lily muttered, shrinking into the sofa. "I've been with humans since I was born. I've lived with humans since I was a kid, and the stories about werewolves all came from humans... I've never seen any other 'others' besides myself. I looked everywhere when I was little but couldn't find any. I thought I was the only werewolf left in the world. To be honest, all I've encountered in recent years are clues related to others. This winged thing is the first one I've actually interacted with."
Hao Ren and Vivian stared at Lily in stunned silence. After a long while, the vampire girl muttered to herself, "What a pathetic creature. I'll try not to mock you."
Hao Ren looked at Lily curiously. "You've never seen any other 'others'? Then you shouldn't have any grudges against Vivian, so why were you two at each other's throats as soon as you met?"
Lily said confidently, "The TV says vampires and werewolves are mortal enemies! I have to live up to my bloodline!"
Hao Ren: "..."
Vivian: "..."
"I especially regret arguing with this guy," Vivian said, moving her mouth a few times before finally saying it. "I've met a lot of werewolves who aren't very bright in my life, but this is the first time I've seen one this idiotic!"
"Ahem, anyway, Lily's life experience is a special case, let's not discuss this," Hao Ren said, clearing his throat to smooth things over. At the same time, he began to worry about the "demon hunters" Vivian mentioned. "So you detected traces of demon hunters this afternoon? Are you sure it was just a misunderstanding?"
"Yeah, I've been dealing with them for many years, at least several hundred years, so I've almost developed a sixth sense. I can sense when demon hunters are nearby," Vivian said, lowering her eyes. "I seemed to sense their aura nearby this afternoon... But after following the scent, I didn't find anything, not even a trace, so I probably made a mistake. I've made mistakes before, after all, it's just a feeling, so it's inevitable."
Vivian paused, observing Hao Ren's expression. She nodded understandingly. "Don't worry, if there really are demon hunters... I'll leave on my own initiative, and take this idiotic werewolf with me, so as not to implicate you. Demon hunters claim to protect humans, but some of them are extremists who sometimes hurt innocent people. They've restrained themselves a bit in the last hundred years, but a mad dog's nature won't change."
Lily immediately perked up her ears. "The mad dog you're talking about..."
"It has nothing to do with you," Vivian said, glaring at the werewolf in annoyance. "You're pretty sensitive in irrelevant situations."
Hao Ren just wanted to say: Vivian was making it sound so easy! If they really left, that five-digit crazy goddess might come knocking on his door the next day!
