Chapter 62 Failure is Not Enough
The underground palace had been blasted with a hole straight to the surface. Hao Ren and the others hadn't figured out what was going on when they saw a rope lowered from the hole, and then a familiar figure appeared before them.
A tall, thin man, looking shrewd and capable, wearing a white shirt and black trousers—who else but Nangong? He was still carrying his black briefcase, with a delicate crossbow hanging from his waist. He was using his free hand to grip a zip line handle, sliding down the rope with a dashing air, as if descending from the heavens.
Hao Ren immediately guessed what those two or three explosions on the ceiling were all about. The culprit was actually this... uh, this self-proclaimed demon hunter! He immediately felt an urge to go up and punch the guy. If the timing wasn't wrong, he would have already gone up there with a brick!
At the same time that Nangong appeared, Vivian and Lily had temporarily returned to their human forms. Although there were still many undead armors surrounding them, with their strength, even in human form, dealing with them for a short time was no problem. The important thing now was to figure out what Nangong's sudden appearance meant! It turned out he hadn't left with the other paranormal enthusiasts, but had stayed in the castle?
At this moment, Nangong had landed safely. He nimbly jumped a few times in the rubble to find a flat spot before looking up to assess the situation. The first thing he saw was three acquaintances standing in front of him with their mouths wide open. His expression was as exaggerated as could be. "Eh... you three?! Why are you here?!"
"Why are *you* here?!" Lily shouted almost simultaneously.
"This is what I do for work," Nangong said, stunned, and then explained, "I was trapped in the tunnel above just now and wanted to blast a way to the surface. I didn't expect to collapse the floor as well. There was a space below, so I came down to take a look..."
Good grief, how much explosives did he use! Using explosives to clear a path in the underground palace? Did this half-baked demon hunter think dying in an ordinary way wasn't fast enough, so he was trying to die in a fancy way?
"Now's not the time for this!" Hao Ren suddenly shouted. In the few seconds that Nangong was talking, the surrounding tin cans had recovered from their brief confusion. Now, hundreds of empty armors were swaying and gathering towards the center of the hall. The demonic chamber's ban imprinted on them should still have some residual effect, so these armors were moving slowly and seemed hesitant, but the red light behind their visors was growing brighter, clearly about to completely lose control—this was not a time for casual conversation!
Only then did Nangong notice the surrounding situation. Seeing countless undead armors with "eyes" glowing red, he was shocked. "Undead knights?! How did this many appear?!"
Hao Ren was wondering how to explain in a couple of sentences why three "ordinary people" would be in the underground palace when Nangong quickly took action. He swiftly drew his small crossbow from his waist, tossed his briefcase on the ground, opened it with one hand, pulled out a small vial from one of the compartments, and then slammed it forcefully towards an undead armor that was starting to approach him. At the same time, the crossbow had already aimed in another direction. With a bang of the bowstring, a silver-white arrow shot out.
The small vial smashed against the first armor, releasing a large cloud of dust that emitted a white, silvery light. This dust seemed to have some kind of magic. After being sprayed out, it didn't scatter but instead rapidly covered the armor's entire body as if it were alive, and began to seep into the armor's seams. The other silver arrow accurately hit the second armor's faceplate. The arrow exploded directly, turning into a silver light that entered the armor's helmet.
"Quick, hide behind these stone slabs!" Nangong quickly reloaded the small crossbow with a second arrow, aiming at a third enemy while shouting urgently, "I'll hold them off! These things aren't fast. You guys find a chance to run! Don't worry about me!"
Hao Ren had just been thinking about how to beat up this troublemaking "demon hunter" to vent his anger, but he was stunned. Although he wasn't good at accomplishing anything, this Nangong's character seemed alright? He was different from those demon hunters Vivian mentioned who didn't value ordinary people's lives at all.
As he spoke, Nangong had attacked another two armors in the same way, stepping back behind a large stone slab as he reloaded the crossbow. Thanks to the large hole he had blasted earlier, the falling rocks in the center of the hall formed a pile of ready-made defenses for people to hide behind. At the same time, Hao Ren also pulled Vivian and Lily behind another large stone slab as Nangong instructed. Now that the underground palace had been blasted open, those slow-moving armors couldn't trap a vampire who could fly or a werewolf who could scale walls, but they didn't want to do that in front of Nangong yet because... this seemingly half-baked demon hunter actually had the real deal! Even if he himself was just a mortal, the fact that he could get his hands on this equipment was enough to illustrate some intimidating issues.
Hao Ren decided to wait and see. If the situation didn't improve, he would have Vivian and Lily take action. Exposing their identities was better than getting beaten up, but if Nangong really had some real skills, then he would of course be happy to save himself the trouble.
After a series of attacks, Nangong took a breath, then pulled out a piece of stiff cardboard from his briefcase. Complex symbols were written on the paper with red paint. Hao Ren only glanced at it before he was shocked to discover that it was actually a Leta rune.
Although ordinary people could use Leta runes, these "ordinary people" also had requirements. Apart from demon hunters, only those ascetics with strong minds could withstand the impact of Leta runes on their minds. What was Nangong's background?
"Don't show your heads, these mindless guys will attack the most active targets," Nangong took the time to glance at Hao Ren and the others' location. "I'll deal with these things. Don't worry, I'm a demon-exorcising expert—Evil Spirit Banishment!"
As the "expert" chanted the incantation, the paper with the runes immediately burst into flames without being lit, but Nangong seemed to be holding it upside down—the end he was holding with his fingers was on fire.
"Ouch, damn..." Nangong immediately jumped up from the burn. The rune card also fell to the ground and went out. He frantically picked up the paper, blew off the dust, and shouted again, "Evil Spirit Banishment! Evil Spirit Banishment! Evil Spirit... damn, the ignition rune burned out."
Hao Ren had just been planning how to watch the demon hunter kill everything in sight, but then he saw Nangong rummaging through his clothes for a lighter, while relighting the rune card and shouting, "This can still banish evil spirits—go!"
The rune card was thrown towards the armor group, erupting in a dazzling red light, and then... then it was gone.
Vivian finally couldn't help but remind him from the side, "What was that, Mr. Demon Hunter—after you attack, don't you look at your results?"
Nangong looked up and found that the four armors he had attacked with his crossbow and demon-repelling powder had already stood up again, swaying. The magical powder and silver arrows had only stunned these tin cans for a few seconds, and they hadn't been hurt at all.
Hao Ren had a forehead full of cold sweat. This Mr. Demon Hunter had been descending from the sky, shooting on the move, using magic and martial arts, looking like he was having a great time, so dashing and mighty. Turns out, from beginning to end, only his pose was good-looking...
"What's going on..." Nangong immediately jumped back two steps, looking down at the equipment in his hand. "It shouldn't be like this. This stuff always works well... Don't panic, I have a backup plan!"
As he spoke, he bent down and took out a large pile of odds and ends from his briefcase, then assembled them into a strange-looking large crossbow with dazzlingly skilled movements. The large crossbow floated with a faint silver light, seeming to reflect the moonlight shining down from the top of the cave. Hao Ren's twitching eyes finally calmed down. This half-baked guy had finally taken out something that looked powerful.
"Humph, the power of this thing is not to be trifled with," Nangong smiled slightly, raised the large crossbow, and aimed at the enemy. "Let you see with your own eyes the demon hunter's silver explosive bolts... Crap, I didn't bring any arrows!"
Vivian slapped her forehead. "Big Dog, get ready to move. This guy is useless."
"Wait!" Hao Ren saw that Vivian and Lily were about to transform and quickly called out in a low voice. Then, he looked at Nangong, who was jumping around not far away but completely useless. He always felt that this guy was a nuisance, even if he was a half-baked one, he was still a nuisance.
Hao Ren wanted to solve this problem, at least to prevent the real demon hunters who might exist behind him from jumping out.
He looked around on the ground. The rubble was either too small or too big, and none of it was very useful. But soon, he found something hard in his pocket, and an involuntary smile appeared on his face.
Hao Ren carefully ran behind Nangong, holding a hard object in his hand, and smashed it towards the back of his head!
At the same time, a sharp voice echoed in his mind: "This unit believes that you absolutely haven't read the instruction manual! There's definitely something wrong with how you're using this!"
