Chapter 6 The Secret Art of the Werewolf
Hao Ren stared blankly at the silver-haired girl before him. Her silver hair fluttered in the cold wind, and her golden eyes glowed in the night. Most striking were her pointed ears, making it hard to look away. If her face hadn't remained the same, Hao Ren would hardly have recognized her as the scatterbrained girl, Liu Lili, whom he'd brought from the city center not long ago.
But it was indeed her—not only her appearance confirmed it, but also her clothes.
The surrounding wind was cold, the moonlight overhead was cold, his clothes were cold, and even the air he breathed out was cold. Hao Ren felt like he was freezing, but the extreme cold actually helped him stay awake. Especially with the thick, cloying stench of blood everywhere, this clarity was even more important. He needed to both be wary of his surroundings and sort out his worldview, trying to understand why he was encountering such a thing in the real world.
He didn't casually strike up a conversation with Lili like before. Perhaps the bizarre environment made him lose the mood to speak, or perhaps seeing Lili's strange appearance made him unsure how to start. Honestly, a girl with beast ears was quite cute, but who knew if this beast-eared girl had a setting where her personality changed drastically after transformation? Hao Ren was one hundred percent certain that he saw a hint of primal beast in Lili's eyes, which made him tremble. Then, he started mentally scrolling through bizarre works from home and abroad.
As the surrounding chill and bloody smell grew stronger, a thin layer of frost covered the path, and the bright moon in the sky was dyed a faint red. Hao Ren was only wearing a thin summer outfit and was already shivering in the cold wind. Lili, however, seemed completely unaffected. She just sniffed hard, her ears twitching a few times. "Cunning bats, using the bloody smell to cover their own scent... Landlord, don't stray too far from me. Those flying guys are active at night and are good at sneak attacks."
Lili spoke with a coldness after "transforming," but hearing what she said, Hao Ren couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief. It seemed her personality hadn't changed drastically, and he dared to ask, "Lili, what's going on? You..."
"I'm a werewolf," Lili's ears perked up even more than before, her tone filled with pride. "Although I don't know how it happened, I am a werewolf! But I've always hidden my identity. This is the first time someone has seen me... Tch, getting involved with those flying guys is never a good thing."
"Oh," Hao Ren responded, thinking that his worldview from childhood might no longer be usable. But just as he was about to say something more, Lili suddenly hissed, "Here it comes!"
Almost at the same time as Lili's voice fell, Hao Ren saw the edge of the red moon tremble out of the corner of his eye. Then, a black dot suddenly magnified from the moon's halo and pounced towards him!
The black dot enlarged into a black shadow. Hao Ren vaguely felt that this shadow didn't look like a bat, but more like a human figure wearing a cloak. But he didn't have time to think more because the shadow was already close!
His whole body was already tensed and ready to dodge. Now that he realized he was the target, his first reaction was to jump to the side. As he jumped, the shadow almost grazed his hair.
The black shadow missed its target and was about to crash on the ground. Lili didn't miss this opportunity. The moment Hao Ren dodged, she swung a whip kick at the attacker. The attack method was simple and crude, and the kick even created a sonic boom, followed by a series of snapping sounds. Hao Ren could only see the silver-haired, wolf-eared girl almost turn into a silver-white flash that was as fast as the black shadow. She used the simplest punches and kicks to fight the vaguely humanoid shadow. There were no techniques or rules, each punch and kick was direct, but it was simple, crude, and effective. The air rippled visibly from the powerful blows. The black shadow gradually fell into a disadvantage, and finally suddenly contracted into the shape of a bat and rushed towards the sky, looking like it was trying to escape.
Lili's last punch missed. The black bat had already flown to the top of the wall. She frowned in annoyance, making a "woof woof" sound from her throat like a jackal showing its threat. Hao Ren was very familiar with this sound. He lived in the mountains of his hometown when he was a child, and there were wolves there at night.
That was the sound!
But this was not the time to marvel. Hao Ren knew he had been dragged into a terrible event. If it were normal, he could ponder this magical experience with anticipation after watching novels and TV. But now he only knew that this was a moment of life and death. The bat did not leave after escaping into the air. "It" was just circling slowly at a high altitude, seemingly mocking the werewolf on the ground who couldn't fly. While flying, it was drawing various trajectories in the air, sometimes an S, sometimes a B...
Hao Ren knew that as long as this bat was circling in the sky, he would not be safe. The werewolf girl seemed strong in close combat, but she obviously couldn't fly or attack from a distance. More importantly, she was a scatterbrain. If the bat rushed down to attack him directly, Lili might not be able to stop it! What if this girl didn't react in time?
"Woof woof..." The angry threat in Lili's throat became more and more suppressed, and the fur on her ears bristled. Then, she suddenly raised her head and let out a clear, long howl at the moon: "Awoo—"
Just as she raised her head to howl, the bat swooped down at high speed. Hao Ren almost jumped up: This werewolf girl was such a scatterbrain! You're still posing in this life-and-death confrontation!
But just as the bat was about to rush to Lili's side, Hao Ren suddenly saw her wrist lift. Before he could see what was flying out, he heard a whistling sound in his ear. The swooping bat only had time to slightly turn into mist before it was hit hard, fleeing back to the high altitude in a sorry state. At this time, Hao Ren finally saw what Lili was holding in her other hand: The thing was square, with clear lines, red, cold, and frightening. It was a brick!
"Ha! Keep flying if you dare!" The werewolf girl loudly taunted the bat circling in the sky. "Don't think I can't deal with you just because you have wings! Ever since I knew I was a werewolf, I've been studying how to deal with you flying bastards. I've been practicing this Tianma Meteor Brick (loosely translated to Pegasus Meteor Brick) for five whole years! Come on, let's fight!"
Hao Ren fell to the ground: How could the legendary werewolf's ultimate skill be throwing bricks? And it was successful!
The bat in the sky must have been hit hard by the brick. It was flying crookedly, and the bloody smell and cold mist from all directions seemed to be fading, obviously because the bat's power was running out. "It" confronted the werewolf girl for a few minutes, and taking advantage of this opportunity, Lili quickly picked up another brick from the ground as a reload. Seeing this scene, the bat finally seemed to be discouraged. It circled in the sky for the last time and turned its head to fly into the dark night sky.
Lili did not give up the opportunity to beat a drowning dog. She raised her hand and threw all the bricks in her hand in a whooshing sound. Hao Ren couldn't see the trajectory of the two bricks, but he saw the bat's figure tilt again, obviously because at least one of the bricks hit accurately - the Tianma Meteor Brick practiced for five years was indeed reliable.
But Hao Ren was more worried about where the bricks Lili threw would end up. This werewolf girl had great strength, and the initial velocity of the brick was probably similar to that of a cannonball... He could only pray that this desolate place was sparsely populated, and hopefully no unlucky person would be affected by this alien fight.
The attacker was repelled, and the surrounding environment gradually returned to normal. The bloody smell disappeared without a trace, as if it were an illusion. The slight heat of the summer night returned, and Hao Ren rubbed his nose and sneezed loudly: This temperature change was indeed not something a normal person could withstand. It seemed that a cold was inevitable.
He looked up at the werewolf girl, watching her beautiful silver hair return to its original short black hair at a speed visible to the naked eye. The pair of energetic wolf ears also disappeared. He smacked his lips, not knowing what to say.
Even in her dazed state, Lili could feel the awkward atmosphere, but she seemed to have expected it, or rather, she had been prepared for it. She just turned her head to Hao Ren and gave him a slightly awkward smile, then bent down to pick up her large suitcase, put it on her shoulder, and turned to leave. "Well, Landlord, I won't rent the house anymore... You should go home quickly. Oh, don't talk about what happened today, it will be very troublesome for me."
After saying this, Lili turned and left.
"Wait!" Hao Ren finally came to his senses when Lili had already walked a few steps away. "Where are you going so late? Come back with me and settle your luggage as soon as possible..."
Lili turned back in surprise, her big eyes shining brightly in the night, full of confusion. "Why? Aren't you afraid that flying guy will come again? That guy might be coming for me - I'm a werewolf, and I'm an enemy of that kind of guy."
Hao Ren gritted his teeth and finally grinned. "Because I'm a good person!"
