Chapter 424: Chapter 424: It Doesn’t Work

In the dim space, Evelyn Clayton slowly opened her eyes, staring fixedly at the driver’s back.

The driver seemed extremely uneasy, pacing around the room before finding an old chair to collapse into.

Evelyn recalled the conversation the two just had, and the fear and unease in the driver’s words gave her an idea.

The pain at the back of her neck remained, yet it only made Evelyn more alert. She steadied her mind and spoke—

"Hey."

The man in the chair was so startled he nearly jumped three feet high. When he turned to see Evelyn awake, he was even more terrified, as if his soul had left his body.

"You—when did you wake up?" The man came to his senses, putting on a fierce façade, though he was visibly shaking as he glared at Evelyn.

Evelyn’s face was pale, and she stared steadily at the man, her voice hoarse, "Since your wife was diagnosed with leukemia."

Realizing Evelyn had overheard their conversation, the driver swallowed, his feigned composure disrupted.

"You, you heard." The man took a step back, seemingly at a loss, standing there for a long moment before collapsing back onto the chair.

He clutched his head, his voice muffled, "I’m sorry, don’t blame us, John Jacobs and I had no other choice..."

"He’s desperate, but you’re not." Evelyn’s eyes were sharp, her voice deliberately gentle, "He was originally a vendor I was negotiating with. He took the money and ran after the contract was signed, afraid of getting caught and jailed, so he resorted to desperate measures... But you, you’ve never broken the law before, have you?"

The man’s actions suddenly paused, and he looked up.

In the darkness, Evelyn couldn’t see his expression, but she could hear it.

The driver’s voice trembled, hoarse, "I, I just want the money, to save my wife..."

"Help me, and I can give you money." Evelyn’s tone was persuasive, "As long as you let me go, when the police catch John Jacobs, I won’t accuse you! Even if John Jacobs tries to drag you in, I’ll take care of your wife, how about that?"

The driver’s prolonged silence made the hope in Evelyn’s heart grow.

This man wasn’t completely lost to reason; she still had a chance...

However, soon enough, the man suddenly stood up, turning his back to her, as if trying to firm his resolve—

"Give up! I won’t betray John! John even lent me money; without him, my wife wouldn’t have survived a single cycle of chemotherapy!"

The man’s voice was full of guilt as he gritted his teeth, "I’m sorry, I can’t let you go..."

Evelyn frowned, wanting to say more, but suddenly she smelled a pungent odor—

The room’s only small window suddenly let in a blinding light, accompanied by a thunderclap outside that seemed to crack the sky open.

The smell became more apparent.

Evelyn’s expression gradually turned to fear.

The driver seemed to smell the unusual scent too, turning around blankly to look.

Evelyn didn’t give him more time to think, shouting, "It’s the smell of gasoline, it’s gasoline! John Jacobs wants to kill us both!!"

The driver was dumbfounded, "How could that be, how could it?!"

But in the next second, a heavy door slammed shut amidst the pouring rain, sounding like the thunderous crash of iron, causing Evelyn and the driver to widen their eyes in shock.

It was the sound of the door they came through being shut!

"Do you want to die?!" Evelyn struggled desperately, "Let me out quickly—let’s get out together! Otherwise, if the factory catches fire, the rain outside won’t help at all!"
