Chapter 356: Chapter 356: No Future
Franklin Ford’s words were tinged with a faint tension: "It’s best if you go out with someone accompanying you these days."
Evelyn Clayton tugged at the corners of her lips, "It’s fine, I’m just going to the police station to make a statement."
She didn’t plan to tell Franklin Ford that she had seen Matthew Sullivan.
"Hurry home, later, I’ll come visit you with Yara Reagan?"
Evelyn Clayton hesitated, opening her mouth as if to refuse, when a McLaren slowly pulled up on the roadside.
She stood there, stunned.
She watched as James Grant stepped out of the car and walked straight towards her.
Evelyn Clayton clutched her phone, the prolonged silence making Franklin Ford a bit worried on the other end of the line: "Evelyn, are you still there?"
As James Grant approached, he heard the voice coming from the phone, a mocking smile flashing across his slightly pale face.
Without thinking, he grabbed Evelyn Clayton’s phone from her hand.
"James Grant!" Evelyn Clayton reacted, biting her teeth slightly, "What do you want to do?"
"Franklin Ford, right?" James Grant glanced at the phone screen, sneered, and hung up the call, "Evelyn Clayton, since when did your relationship with him become so good?"
Evelyn Clayton reached out to take back her phone, speaking coldly, "It’s none of your business."
James Grant’s anger, mixed with wronged feelings, showed at the corners of his eyes with a hint of red. He stared fixedly at Evelyn Clayton for a long time, a trace of faint sorrow appearing on his face.
Evelyn Clayton met his gaze, her defiance waning like a flag lowered in defeat.
"Evelyn Clayton, you have no heart." James Grant stepped forward in a daze, his slender fingertips touching Evelyn Clayton’s cold cheek, "Are you avoiding me and refusing to see me because you have feelings for Franklin Ford?"
A voice inside her screamed, and Evelyn Clayton turned her cheek away hastily to avoid James Grant’s touch, "It’s nothing to do with him... James Grant, have you forgotten that you’re already engaged to Lynn Yates."
"You know clearly why I’m engaged to her!" James Grant’s voice suddenly rose, fraught with uncontainable anger, like a trapped beast at the brink, "You know well, I—"
"It doesn’t matter whether I know or not, that’s the reality!" Evelyn Clayton suddenly interrupted James Grant, her voice beginning to tremble, "You should marry her, have children, live a good life, why do you keep entangling with me—"
Before she could finish, James Grant lunged forward, pulling Evelyn Clayton into his embrace.
His arms tightened, as if he wanted to confine Evelyn Clayton forever, to merge her with himself.
"Evelyn..."
James Grant’s voice was low and husky, with a barely perceptible tremor, "You’re not allowed to be with others, not allowed..."
As if losing all strength, Evelyn Clayton closed her eyes, forcing back the faint glimmer of tears.
Her lips parted slightly, her eyes blankly looking toward the faint blue sky, "I went to see Matthew Sullivan. He wanted to kill me, do you know?"
"Who else in this world hates me enough to want me dead?"
"Yolanda Thorne? Matthew Sullivan?"
"No... none of them, James Grant, there’s one more person who most wants me dead."
James Grant’s pupils suddenly dilated, releasing Evelyn Clayton, staring blankly into her eyes.
Evelyn Clayton suddenly smiled, her tears congealing, swirling in her eyes without falling.
"You’ve guessed it long ago, haven’t you... since the day you knew my blood was actually for Yolanda Thorne, you guessed it. My father’s death back then was related to Harrison Grant."
As soon as the words fell, Evelyn Clayton’s tears also slowly slid down.
This long-buried landmine was finally triggered by Matthew Sullivan’s murderous intention, in an instant blocking every path for her and James Grant.
Looking at James Grant’s dazed and shocked face, Evelyn Clayton held back her tears, letting out a light laugh.
"Nothing is settled yet, I don’t even have a decent piece of evidence, it’s just speculation."
"But James, we really have no future."
