Chapter 314: Chapter 314: Stop Messing With Me
The answer was self-evident.
Watching Evelyn Clayton lower her head again, carefully bandaging him, James Grant felt as though he could barely breathe.
What should he say?
Apologize for Harrison Grant’s words?
Or...
James Grant frowned, his voice slightly hoarse, "You shouldn’t have taken such a risk."
The sentence was abrupt and without context. Evelyn, having finished bandaging him, raised an eyebrow as she looked at James Grant.
Her gaze was laced with sarcasm, mockery.
She understood what James meant and countered, "You know? Summer Monroe had a car accident, at the hospital."
James remained silent, which was tantamount to admitting it.
"Do you think I did it?"
Facing Evelyn’s mocking expression, James couldn’t help but explain, "I didn’t mean anything else. I just thought that using such a method to verify whether Summer really needed your blood was too risky. If evidence was left behind, what would you do?"
Evelyn placed the iodine back on the table, her expression turning completely cold.
"I’m not that stupid, nor that malicious. There are many ways to prove this. I don’t need Director Grant to worry about it."
Saying this, Evelyn picked up the medication and bandages from the table and stood up to walk towards the bedroom, "Director Grant’s injury isn’t severe, if there’s nothing else, you can leave now."
James Grant was startled into standing up.
The movement made Evelyn turn back to look at him, frowning as she asked, "What is it?"
"If it’s not you, then who?" James looked slightly confounded, "Before I came, I received a message from Keith Donovan, saying that Summer’s situation was very serious, she was teetering on the edge of life and death."
These words made Evelyn forget her anger at James, a momentary daze sweeping through her eyes.
She instinctively said, "You had Keith watch over things?"
James nodded.
"It’s you who’s being too risky." Evelyn blurted out, showing a touch of anxiety in her tightly knit brows, "If Heather Donovan finds out, she might suspect you! Didn’t you just strike a deal with Tim Young, taking a project from Summer?"
This time, it was James’ turn to be taken aback.
Moments later, James’ expression darkened a bit, stepping forward ever so slightly.
He looked intently at Evelyn, his voice lowering, "Are you worried about me?"
Evelyn felt she had misspoken, her eyes widening slightly, secretly annoyed and embarrassed.
She took a step back, calmly staring at James, "You saved me today, I’ll consider it as repaying a favor. It’s best if you have Keith withdraw. If he catches any dirt... that woman is even harder to deal with than Summer, don’t say I didn’t warn you."
With that, Evelyn turned and hurried back to the bedroom.
James stood there, a involuntary smile curling at his mouth.
All the oppressed feelings scattered at that moment, James pondered for a while, then paced to the floor-to-ceiling window and called Keith Donovan.
Keith answered quickly, his voice kept low, "What’s up? I’m at the scene of Summer’s car accident now, and there’s someone watching things at the hospital, but there’s no movement on Summer’s side yet."
"No need to keep watch, just withdraw."
After a quiet three seconds,
Keith at the hospital entrance, standing in the shade, clenched his teeth against the cold wind, "Are you messing with me?"
He had been feeding mosquitoes here for hours, and now he was told to withdraw?!
"Withdraw, Evelyn says it’s not safe, too easy to get caught with something."
Though James’ voice was calm, Keith could hear an inexplicable emotion within it.
Something like pride, yet also like showing off.
Keith was speechless, nearly laughing out of frustration.
So somehow these two had reconciled, and he was just a stepping stone in their romantic drama!
With nothing more to say, Keith pretended it was for the good of society.
"Alright, I’m leaving, but don’t keep jerking me around!"
Huffing as he hung up the call, Keith clapped his hands and left.
But he didn’t notice a shadow flickering in the depths of the shade.
