Chapter 186: Thank You for Speaking Up for Me

Chapter 186: Chapter 186: Thank You for Speaking Up for Me

In the office, James Grant sat leisurely in Evelyn Clayton’s office, waiting for her to return.

As soon as the door opened, Evelyn saw him without his suit jacket, lazily leaning on her sofa, with the collar of his shirt half open in a casual manner, revealing his alluring collarbone.

Sitting there was an image of a restrained handsome man.

The sight made her hand tremble involuntarily, grateful that she didn’t let Iris Lockwood come along; otherwise, she really wouldn’t know how to explain her breakup with James Grant.

"You’re back. What were you and Iris up to? Didn’t bully her, did you?"

He raised his attractive eyebrows, looking at her with a gaze that was meaningful and addictively enticing.

Evelyn sneered coldly with disdainful phoenix eyes.

He really knows her, aware that she’s not the type to be bullied.

"Nothing much."

Even if she said it, it wouldn’t matter; the Monroe Family’s affairs weren’t related to the Grant Family.

Evelyn sat on the sofa next to him.

James raised an eyebrow, his gaze scanning her from head to toe: "Do you think I believe you?"

Just looking at his inexplicably irritating face made her annoyed, she cast him a scornful glance and spoke.

"Went to get some perfume. Last time Summer Monroe got hurt so badly at the studio, she was afraid of hospitals. This time when I saw her, I smelled a scent not like ordinary perfume, Iris said she had it."

James leaned on the sofa, lazily pressing his fingers against his jaw.

"Summer’s deceased husband was Zachary Locke, and the Locke Family and Grant Family are still in cooperation."

Her eyes lit up for a moment.

Cooperation, so Summer knows Harrison Grant?

From outside, suddenly a call was heard—

"Evelyn."

Before seeing someone come in, Evelyn directly threw a pillow over, signaling to James to mind his image.

The door opened, and Matthew Sullivan came in.

Upon seeing James, his smile immediately faded: "What are you doing here?"

James didn’t spare him a single extra glance, his attention fully on Evelyn, sitting upright with an air of indifferent ease.

"The photos from last time. Did you reshoot them? Your efficiency is too slow."

Her efficiency is slow?

"You..."

Matthew directly interrupted her: "Clearly the photos were so good, was it not you doing this deliberately? Do you know how much Evelyn put into this project?"

After that, he deliberately brought up the engagement party: "Besides, you’re already engaged to the Yates Family, why not think about how to satisfy them!"

As the words fell, the temperature in the office plummeted.

Evelyn couldn’t help but shiver, swallowing hard.

James’s jawline tightened; his face showed no emotional fluctuation but was so calm it became increasingly terrifying, a chilling curve rising at his lips.

He stood up, step by step approaching Matthew.

The strong sense of oppression made Matthew somewhat regret saying those words.

"A dog should know what to say and what not to say. If one day there’s no tongue, it won’t be good."

The words were icy cold, and after speaking, James gave a reckless laugh by his ear.

Matthew’s face turned pale, he clenched his teeth and glared at him, but dared not speak a word, watching him leave the office.

Evelyn looked at Matthew’s obnoxious yet cowardly behavior, amused inwardly.

She stood up, but her expression turned solemn, pursing her red lips tightly.

"Matthew, thanks for speaking up for me, but I just broke up with James not long ago, and the issues between you and Iris before, I can’t forget so quickly. Therefore, I can’t accept you yet."

Matthew was worried she would outright reject him and quickly changed his expression, pretending to understand.

"I know, I understand Evelyn, as long as you don’t push me away, everything is fine. Let’s go on a date after work and get to know each other better."

She gritted her teeth.

Her face showed nothing, but inwardly she was complaining millions of times.

Who wants to date him?!

But to avoid raising Matthew’s suspicion, Evelyn gritted her teeth, took a breath, and replied.

"Fine, then you go first, I have to work."

Matthew saw her agree, immediately put on a smile, gave a few words of advice, and left.

——

After work, Evelyn had just tidied up and walked out of the office, only to see James leaning against the wall, one knee bent against it, standing at the doorway.

Seeing her come out, he slightly narrowed his hawk-like eyes: "Go home."

"You go first, I have things to do."

Evelyn glanced down at her watch, waving her hand in refusal.

His narrowed eyes held a hint of doubt.
