Chapter 142: Chapter 142: Investment Failure
Upon hearing her words, Yara Reagan’s pretty face scrunched up like a bun.
"How is that possible? Harrison Grant had a heart transplant back then. According to reason, once healed, there shouldn’t be any after-effects, and certainly not a long-term need for your blood to sustain his life."
"Are you sure?"
A bit of color returned to Evelyn Clayton’s pale face, perhaps due to excitement.
"I can’t be 100% certain, but there shouldn’t be too big a deviation. I can ask my uncle again; he’s an expert in cardiac surgery."
After a phone call, Yara’s expression grew increasingly grim.
"Evelyn, I’m sure this matter isn’t that straightforward. My uncle says my suspicion is correct."
Evelyn’s heart skipped a beat, and she smirked in self-mockery.
"Seems like they’ve really turned me into a blood cow."
Worried, Yara took Evelyn’s hand.
"Don’t be foolish; while giving blood frequently won’t kill you, it will affect your health. Also, does James Grant know about this?"
At the mention of that man, Evelyn fell into deep thought once more.
She felt like she was falling into an endless vortex of darkness, thinking there might be light after the turn, only to find ahead a deep, dark abyss.
"He... knows I donate blood."
"Oh, are you crazy?" Yara tapped Evelyn’s forehead with exasperation.
"They’re father and son. If they’re colluding and need your blood for some other purpose, they’ll drain you dry, and you’ll still be counting money for them."
Evelyn hesitated a bit.
But before she could speak, she heard Yara’s voice.
"Leave this to me; I’ll investigate privately. Just don’t let James know."
Evelyn nodded; leaving this matter to Yara spared her the trouble.
After dinner, Evelyn felt somewhat recovered.
She idly picked up her phone, and a news flash appeared directly.
Initially intending to dismiss it, her finger clicked on the page involuntarily upon spotting the content.
"The Grant Group faced investment failure leading to shareholder losses, yet no one has stepped forward to resolve it."
There were countless related tags beneath the news. Upon seeing them, Evelyn’s eyes suddenly tightened, and she called out to Yara.
"What do you mean? Such a major conglomerate, how could they possibly face an economic crisis?" Yara was puzzled.
Evelyn tossed the phone in front of her friend, "See for yourself. Such big news; it wouldn’t be fake on the financial headlines."
Yara picked up the phone with a suspicious look.
After looking through it, her brows furrowed tightly.
"So... what do you want to do?"
Evelyn hesitated slightly, then bit her lower lip and directly dialed James Grant’s number.
Long busy signals, a lengthy wait.
Just as Evelyn was about to hang up, the man’s cool, deep voice came from the other side.
"What’s up?"
"...It’s me. I saw the news on finance; I wanted to ask how things are over there?"
Evelyn clearly sensed that the person on the other side of the call hesitated a bit.
"Nothing much, just a small issue. I’ll handle it here."
Then came endless silence.
Evelyn’s hand gripping the phone turned slightly pale at the knuckles. She didn’t know what to say next.
Just expressing some concern seemed too ambiguous.
While thinking of words for ending the call, James Grant spoke first.
"Things are a bit busy here. I’ll call you back later."
Before Evelyn could respond, the sound of a hang-up came abruptly from the other end.
