Chapter 139: Chapter 139: Are You Cyrus Hawthorne’s Sister?
Ann Vaughn slowly closed her eyes, listening to the bomb countdown ringing in her ears, each tick seemingly piercing the softest part of her heart.
Her chin rested on his shoulder, her heart pounding like a drum, as the hot blood in her body was unbearable due to the surrounding flames.
Yet she was no longer afraid or desperate, only left with tranquility and a throbbing sensation.
After a long while, just when Ann Vaughn thought they would perish here.
She was scooped up by Cyrus Hawthorne, and immediately his deep, magnetic voice came from above her head, "It’s okay now."
Ann Vaughn’s mind stopped for a while, then she incredulously opened her eyes wide, looking at his determined jaw with a mix of stun and surprise.
The ecstatic feeling of narrowly escaping death made her disregard the discomfort brought by the fire’s scorching heat.
"Wait!" Just as Cyrus was about to carry her out of the cabin, Ann Vaughn suddenly remembered that young boy, so she tugged at his sleeve, "There’s a little boy there, can you take him too?"
Cyrus’s keen eyes glanced at the growing fierce blaze in the cabin, his thin lips pressed lightly together. Seeing the pleading in Ann Vaughn’s eyes, he nodded slightly.
Ann Vaughn smiled slightly, though she didn’t notice the broken vial scattered under the chair where she sat, where Cyrus had just stepped.
After placing Ann Vaughn on a safe spot outside the cabin, Cyrus returned inside.
Finally able to breathe in fresh air, Ann Vaughn still felt her head spinning, and her lungs felt painfully hot, each breath filled with heat.
She forced herself to keep her eyes wide open, closely watching the movements on the other side of the cabin.
It only took a while before Cyrus came out of the cabin, holding Wilder Sheridan with one hand.
But just as he was stepping out, a burnt beam from the roof suddenly fell down!
"Watch out!!" Ann Vaughn’s heart leaped to her throat, as she saw the beam land squarely on Cyrus’s shoulder, her blood ran cold, her body frozen in place.
Cyrus just furrowed his brow slightly, then calmly walked out of the danger zone, coming to Ann Vaughn and casually tossing Wilder aside.
After that, he leaned against Ann Vaughn as if exhausted.
"Are you okay?" Ann Vaughn quickly reached out to touch the shoulder where Cyrus was hit, which was already starting to swell, the bone slightly fractured.
Ann Vaughn bit her lip, her eyes filled with almost overflowing guilt.
"Jacket pocket, phone." Cyrus leaned against her, his pale lips parting lightly as he spoke, trying to ease the burning pain in his shoulder.
Upon hearing this, Ann Vaughn immediately fished out the phone, calling Mark Joyce directly, informing him of their current location.
Soon, Mark arrived with his team, taking Wilder away as well.
City Center, First Hospital, VIP ward.
Ann Vaughn felt her eyelids weighed a ton; no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t open them.
It wasn’t until the next day at noon that she awoke from the haze.
Her throat was still dry and sore, but the smell of smoke in her breath wasn’t as strong.
Sitting in a daze for a while, Ann Vaughn suddenly remembered something, yanked the needle from the back of her hand, threw off the covers, and ran out of the ward.
Cyrus’s ward was on the same floor. As she reached the door, Laura Quinn just entered, followed closely by Cynthia Vaughn.
Seeing Ann Vaughn walk over, Cynthia stopped in her tracks, blocking the ward entrance with her body.
"Ann Vaughn, do you have no shame? Cian’s injury is all your fault, and if you have any conscience at all, can you stop getting in the way?"
"Cian has already agreed to divorce you; are you still trying to cling on? Don’t blame me for not warning you; mother-in-law really doesn’t want to see you now!"
"This is between Cyrus and me, it’s none of your business," Ann Vaughn said coldly, looking at Cynthia.
Cynthia immediately laughed, "You sound so righteous; don’t tell me you don’t know what you’ve done to Hawthorne Corp.?"
After saying this, she walked into the ward, closing the door, leaving Ann Vaughn outside.
Ann Vaughn stared at the closed door, pressing her lips together slightly.
Laura was inside too; if she went in, she would surely be thrown out.
Also, Cynthia’s words seemed to carry some kind of message that bothered her.
"Pretending to be all graceful and pitiful in front of my mom and brother; who knew you’d be so arrogant behind their backs." A familiar murmuring voice came from behind Ann Vaughn.
Turning around, Ann Vaughn initially felt puzzled upon seeing Bella Hawthorne’s face, then looked surprised, "It’s you?"
"Sister-in-law, you still remember me!" Bella’s eyes sparkled as she looked at Ann Vaughn, her face flushed with excitement, "I’ve been looking for you for ages, but I never thought you were my sister-in-law! We’re so destined!"
Sister-in-law?
Ann Vaughn was briefly stunned, then the words Bella just said suddenly clicked in her mind.
"You’re Cyrus’s sister?"
"Yes, sister-in-law! I’m Bella Hawthorne; I was studying abroad and just came back recently." Bella felt a little embarrassed; if it weren’t for the tumultuous news.
She wouldn’t have known that the lady her brother heroically saved was her sister-in-law.
Because when her brother got married, even her mother waived the need for her to return or even see a photo, saying it wasn’t necessary, so she didn’t recognize her.
Ann Vaughn realized for the first time that Cyrus had a sister; she hadn’t heard this before.
No wonder she found Bella’s eyes familiar that day, like someone she knew — Laura.
"By the way!" Seeing Ann Vaughn not speaking, Bella thought she was upset by Cynthia’s words earlier, so she explained, "Sister-in-law, don’t believe a word Cynthia says; no matter what others say, I absolutely trust you!"
"What?" Ann Vaughn looked at her, puzzled.
"You really don’t know, sister-in-law?" Bella quickly closed her mouth, recalling what Cyrus had instructed her.
She instinctively hid her phone behind her back, shaking her head, "No, nothing; everything’s resolved now, so don’t worry!"
Ann Vaughn watched Bella intently, her eyes filled with skepticism, then said, "If you’re not willing to tell me, I’ll just find someone else to ask."
"No, sister-in-law." Bella pouted, regretting bringing it up; if someone else twisted the story, how could she explain?
With no other choice, under Ann Vaughn’s half-coaxing gaze, Bella reluctantly handed over her phone.
But as Ann Vaughn saw the shocking photos in the news reports and the malicious comments below.
Her body gradually became rigid.
