Chapter 241: Chapter 241: Her Phone Died?
"Ann Vaughn, how boring it is to just listen to us talk, you should join in." Doris Dunn looked at Ann Vaughn and smiled at her, "Tell us what you’ve been up to these past few years, I’m very curious."
"How have you been since you divorced Mr. Hawthorne?"
There was a few seconds of silence in the room, and Yasmine Warren awkwardly tried to stop her, "Why are you asking that..."
"What’s wrong?" Doris Dunn assumed an innocent look, "I’m just curious, just want Ann to satisfy my curiosity, is that not okay?"
"Curiosity?" Ann Vaughn’s eyes grew mistier, for some reason feeling like the whole world was tilting.
She reached out to press the acupoints on her neck, feeling somewhat better before she returned to her seat.
Everyone watched as Ann Vaughn suddenly seemed like a different person. She raised a glass of cocktail with her left hand, rested her other on the armrest, and crossed her long legs, exuding an air of casual dominance.
In an instant, she transformed from the gentle girl-next-door beauty into an arrogant and domineering queen.
It almost took everyone by surprise.
"Where do you get the nerve to expect me to satisfy your curiosity? Do you want a mic to keep producing verbal garbage?" Ann Vaughn swirled her glass, her eyes with a dismissive sharpness looked at Doris Dunn.
"Ann Vaughn, I just asked you a question. If you don’t want to answer, forget it. Do you need to speak to me like this?"
"Shh." Seeing Doris Dunn’s angry expression, Ann Vaughn placed a slender finger to her lips, smiling wildly, "Mind your image, superstar, this double standard isn’t good."
"You—" Doris Dunn almost crushed the glass in her hand, so angry her shoulders trembled.
The feeling was no different than back when she used to bully Ann Vaughn, each time she would have her face scratched by the seemingly obedient and non-resistant Ann!
This woman seemed so innocent in front of teachers and classmates, everyone thought it was Doris Dunn bullying her, but in reality?
Whenever there was a chance to fight back, Ann Vaughn never suffered under her hand. Every time Doris tried to hit Ann, it was actually her who ended up scratched!
Doris Dunn was about to explode from holding it in, she stared at Ann Vaughn with anger and said, "Ann Vaughn, do you dare to bet with me!"
No wonder they say a woman can be as noisy as fifty ducks, this woman might be like five hundred.
Ann Vaughn looked down, and then up with a reckless smile towards Doris Dunn, "I’m afraid you don’t have the capital to wager with me."
"Ha, do you think you have the capital then? Fine, I won’t make this hard for you. If you can get Mr. Hawthorne to come here within an hour, I will submit to your will. If you can’t, then you’ll strip and leave from here, how about it?"
Even the boys next to her found it hard to bear, "Doris Dunn, you’re going too far. What did Ann Vaughn do to you?"
"Oh wow, what kind of favor did Ann give you that you’re protecting her like this?" Doris Dunn talked until the boy’s face turned red, and deliberately provoked, "Ann Vaughn, are you scared?"
"Scared?" Ann Vaughn raised her fine brows and downed the deep red liquid in her glass, her mind exploding in euphoria, "I’ll bet. Just don’t be a sore loser when you lose."
"Ha, you really dare to talk." Doris Dunn stood up, walked over to Ann Vaughn, crossed her arms and looked at her, "Everyone here is a witness. Since you speak so absolutely, don’t blame me for any lack of friendly sentiment if you lose!"
She just didn’t believe Mr. Hawthorne would pay attention to a mere ex-wife, who didn’t know the white moonlight in Mr. Hawthorne’s heart was Ann’s own sister?
She was waiting to see Ann Vaughn make a fool of herself, crawling out of here like a drowned rat!
"Hmph, whoever reneges is a puppy, OK?" Ann Vaughn was slightly tipsy, the blush on her delicate face was enticing, her eyes misty and hard to focus.
After she finished speaking, she hiccuped lightly, then looked down to search for her purse but couldn’t find it.
The girl sitting next to her kindly helped her grab the purse from behind and handed it to her, "Here you go."
Ann Vaughn gleefully thanked her, appearing as sober as possible, and called back on the number Cyrus had dialed earlier.
The phone rang for ages, but no one answered.
Did her phone die?
Ann Vaughn tapped the phone screen, pouting her red lips slightly, mumbling, you can’t die now, you have to bring Cyrus to me.
Meanwhile.
In the QY underground research facility on the outskirts.
"Knock knock—" The office door was knocked on, and receiving no response, it was opened without permission.
Jane Sheridan walked in with some files in her arms, sweeping her gaze across the room, not seeing Cyrus Hawthorne, she then walked over to the desk.
Just as she was about to put down the files, she saw the phone vibrate next to the computer. When she saw the words "little ancestor" written affectionately on the screen, her smile dropped immediately.
The phone rang for about a minute before Jane finally picked it up and stared at the affectionate nickname for a while.
Then she pressed the hang-up button.
Jane looked at the locked screen, her gaze glimmering, then entered a string of birthday numbers, and sure enough, the password was correct.
After entering the call history, she directly deleted the "little ancestor" call record and wiped the phone of fingerprints with a tissue, placing it back on the table.
"What is it?" Cyrus Hawthorne came out of the lounge, seeing Jane standing by the desk, he frowned slightly, "Is there any progress?"
"Yes, so I came to see if there’s anything that needs adjusting..." Jane smiled calmly, placing the files on the table.
Cyrus sat down, opened the top file and skimmed through it briefly, then said, "The proposal is feasible, we’ll discuss other issues at the meeting tomorrow morning, you may leave now."
"Understood, President Hawthorne." Jane nodded, and upon turning, glanced at the phone pushed to the corner by the document folders, smiling silently, then left.
...
Back in the private room, Ann Vaughn felt frustrated after her call went unanswered, so she threw the phone aside and joined in the truth or dare game.
Ann Vaughn seemed to have terribly bad luck tonight, as three out of five swings of the bottle landed in her direction.
Though her classmates wanted to give her a break, Ann couldn’t seem to drown herself fast enough, downing drink after drink, she was utterly letting loose.
