Chapter 217: Mike’s Thoughts

Chapter 217: Chapter 217: Mike’s Thoughts

The first zombie bird appeared soon after. Its wings were torn, its eyes pale and glowing, and its screeches echoed in the sky like broken glass.

Mike tensed at the controls, his hands gripping the stick harder.

"Damn it... We’re really meeting them this early," he muttered.

But before he could even prepare, Ivy had already raised her rifle. One shot, clean and accurate. The bird fell instantly, spiraling down into the fields below.

Mike’s eyes widened. He glanced at Ivy, then quickly looked back at the skies.

More came. Three this time. Their feathers were ragged, dripping with black blood, and their claws were sharp like steel.

They rushed toward the helicopter, screaming.

Ivy’s eyes narrowed, and her hands moved with calm precision. Bang. Bang. Bang. Three shots, three kills. The birds dropped one after another, never even reaching the blades.

’Good. At least my aim hasn’t rusted. If Silas wakes up and sees me struggling, he’ll never sleep during my watch.’

Mike let out a long breath, sweat running down his temple.

He had expected to be on his own since Silas was fast asleep, but Ivy had taken control of the situation before he could even panic.

More birds came, smaller ones in flocks, and Ivy kept shooting, her movements steady, her aim sharp. Not one came close enough to scratch the windows.

Mike stole a glance at her, and for the first time, his heart eased.

’So she’s not just some trouble Silas dragged along. She’s sharp... deadly sharp. With her here, maybe this trip won’t be a nightmare after all.’

The rest of the trip was pretty simple. With Ivy’s assistance, Mike hardly has to do anything.

Slowly, Mike got excited. Ivy synced so well with him that he was tempted to recruit her.

’Once Silas wakes up... I will ask for his help. Maybe then this girl would agree to assist me.’

In the apocalypse, when all the roads were blocked and no one knew about the unpredictable disasters nearing them, the safest mode of transportation was air.

A pilot like him needed a sharpshooter beside him, but more than that, they needed someone who could sync with them and make their job as a pilot easier. Ivy qualified for all those criteria.

He could already imagine himself getting rich. By taking rich clients to their destination and with Ivy by his side, they can do more than 20 trips per month!

A day passed just like that. Ivy had long ago felt her connection with the base being severed. Her only hope was... her army managed the base well.

Silas woke up after a long, deep sleep. Maybe it was because the constant haunting pressure had left his mind, or maybe it was because he trusted that Ivy would manage everything; he slept exceptionally well.

On waking up, the sound of a gunshot echoed in his ears, and his heart tensed.

With a swift motion, he sat up straight and stared in the direction from where the gunshot had sounded.

However, seeing Ivy’s focused expression and the cold aura, his heart skipped a beat.

’Wow... my wifey is looking so beautiful... I want to kiss her....’

Feeling the slight strain in his lower body and the heat rising, he forced himself to look away.

The burning gaze on her back made Ivy pause for a brief moment, and suddenly she had a wicked thought.

In an instant, she leaned forward so that her back and waist were visible from Silas’s angle, and sure enough, she heard the slight gasp escaping from Silas’s lips.

Her eyes flashed a smug expression, but the moment she turned around, all that remained was the mask of innocence and feigned surprise.

"Are you awake?"

Silas closed his eyes and muttered under his breath.

"Vixen... a total vixen. She might as well suck my soul out of my body instead of torturing me like this."

Ivy suppressed her laughter and stated in a calm voice, "I will prepare breakfast; you should keep a watch until then."

Silas threw a helpless expression in Ivy’s direction, and when she remained unmoved, he could only take the rifle from her hand while his body fought back the lust coursing through his body.

’I regret my earlier decisions... at this rate... I will definitely end up with purple balls.’ He thought while venting his frustration on the nearby zombie bird.

Bang!

The heat waves traveling from the window to the helicopter made Silas frown.

A few beads of sweat started to drop down his face, and he wondered how Ivy, who had been guarding for the past day, looked refreshed and unaffected.

If Ivy could hear his inner thought, she would have laughed. After her power was upgraded to Level 2, the barrier around her filtered the air, and the temperature remained constant.

When Ivy returned with the breakfast, she saw Silas sweating; her eyes flashed, and the next second, Silas felt a barrier blocking the hot air.

A wave of coolness washed over him, and he sighed in delight.

’Hm? What is going on?’

Silas stared at Mike, still sweating buckets, and his gaze turned toward Ivy, who nonchalantly placed the breakfast near him.

His eyes flashed with unknown emotions before he returned to his normal self and happily munched on the food.

So what if his wife was punishing him now? At least... she cared for him.

After breakfast, Silas leaned back and looked at Mike. "When will we arrive at Alva State?"

Mike answered quickly. "If I drive without taking any rest, about half a day."

Silas nodded, his expression calm. "Alright. I’ll stay on watch then."

For the next half day, Silas sat with the rifle in his hands. His eyes never left the sky.

Ivy didn’t disturb him. She didn’t even start any talk.

Instead, she walked to the other side of the helicopter and helped Mike deal with the zombie birds that kept appearing.

Because of their teamwork, Mike was shocked
