Chapter 212: Chapter 212: Little Sister
"Ah... why is the temperature rising so rapidly? I am on the verge of melting!" Felix muttered, his black eyes staring at the zombie with alertness, as sweat trickled down his face.
His entire t-shirt was soaked in sweat, and the stickiness of dust mixed with sweat caused him to frown.
"Focus." Kael frowned. He was in no good condition as he swung a heavy iron axe in the direction of one of the incoming zombies.
Just then, he felt a presence behind him, and the next second, he teleported 20 meters away from his original location.
Sure enough, the next second, a rotten hand slashed through the air where Kael had stood. The intensity was so much that the zombie fell straight to the ground due to the impact.
Kael frowned as he noticed the zombie’s strength and speed. "Too fast... they aren’t like Level 1 zombies at all... are they evolved forms?"
For the next 20 minutes, both brothers, along with a few team members, fought the zombies, and once they cleared the perimeters of the base, they returned inside.
"Ah... fighting under such a scorching sun is no different than a punishment; for a moment I even wondered if our base leader hates us and hence he is giving us this mission..." Felix’s unabashed deep voice rang out, drawing attention.
"Haha! Felix, you are indeed smart. However, you have only guessed half correctly. The main reason for such misery is that the base leader’s son liked a young lady and proposed to her; however, the young lady declared that she liked you instead."
"What the fuck?" Felix cursed, his face twisted in disgust. The mere thought of having experienced so much misery because of some stupid young lady’s confession made his blood boil.
He even forgot the rising heat in his body and the urge to bathe in cold water.
Kael frowned but didn’t comment. Such a childish excuse. If he didn’t know about the base leader’s greediness, he would have almost believed it.
"Felix, let’s go home first." He commanded, his cold voice striking and difficult to ignore.
"But brother..." Felix was filled with unwillingness; however, under the sharp stare of his brother, he could only sigh and obediently follow behind.
Soon, they reached the hut in which the Nightbane family was living.
Once inside the house, the unbearable heat subsided a little, and Felix sighed in relief. Turning toward the switchboard, he tried to turn on the fan, but to his dismay, even after turning on and off the switch multiple times, the fan remained still.
"Damn it! When are we going to have electricity 24/7 like we used to? Forget it... I will just take a bath." He grumbled and turned toward the kitchen only to be stopped by Kael.
"Don’t; water is rapidly depleting. We should use it sparingly."
Felix’s shoulder slumped, and he could only lie on the sofa like a dead fish.
Grr~ Grr~
The familiar biting ache in his stomach made Felix close his eyes in despair. Each day was exhausting and tiring due to the constant fight for survival, compounded by not having enough food to eat, which felt like another form of mental torture.
Kael’s eyes softened, and he entered the room shared by siblings. Soon, he returned with a stiff bun that had long ago lost all of its warmth.
Felix opened his eyes at the sound of footsteps and saw the bun in Kael’s hand. His lips curled weakly, though bitterness filled his gaze.
"Brother... you should eat it. You fight harder than I do, and without your strength, I cannot survive either."
Kael placed the bun firmly into Felix’s palm. His expression was cold, yet his voice carried an unspoken warmth.
"Eat. If you collapse, I will have to carry you while fighting. That will only drag me down."
Felix chuckled faintly, though his throat ached.
He slowly chewed the dry piece of bread, each bite scraping his tongue.
Yet hunger made it taste like the finest meal in the world.
While eating, Felix thought of something and asked, "Do you think our little sister would be hungry now?"
Kael paused on the sofa with his eyes closed before replying in a steady voice, "She would be fine."
"How can you be certain?" Felix asked with a tinge of worry in his eyes.
The appeal of the bun faded, and the mere fact of how his sister might be starving made him feel that the bun wasn’t tasty anymore.
’I should just save it. What if she doesn’t have enough food to eat? What if even after posting the request, we need more food to get her exact location?’
"Say good things and everything will go well." No emotions could be detected from his tone, but on a closer look, his fist was tightly clenched as if he was holding something back.
"If you say so..." Felix sounded a little lost.
"Where is Ember?" Sensing the gloomy mood, Kael changed the subject.
"Where else? To her lover." Felix snorted, though he personally didn’t have any grudge against the young man his sister was dating; the attitude of that young man’s family infuriated them.
Before the apocalypse, the lover’s family flattered them and almost praised them to the sky every single time they met. But now? Now that they are thriving due to hoarding way more than they, those bastards are threatening to break off the engagement.
If it hadn’t been for the young man’s persistence, the engagement might have been broken off long ago.
"Let’s not talk about her. What about you? How is your relationship with my sister-in-law?" Felix asked with interest.
In an instant, Kael’s face flushed slightly, but his eyes remained closed. "Don’t talk nonsense; she still hadn’t said yes."
"Yeah... yeah. I know." Felix muttered, then he thought about his younger sister and chuckled, "You both can’t be kept at home. My younger sister will be much better than you! She must still be single! I will dote on her once we find her!"
