Chapter 241: Chapter 241
- KILLIAN -
Fear. Even from a mile away, I can sense the fear of my prey. It’s very satisfying for a predator to witness the defeat of a victim before it’s claimed as a conquest. And right now, I am that predator, enjoying the trivial acts of my prey.
I thrive on it. Dine on it even. And just at the right time, when I have her cornered, I’ll strike and leave nothing untouched. Hunting has never felt so divine.
The door to my office bursts open and a huge figure belonging to a man, which nearly conveyed the full door entrance, waltz in. It’s no one other than Liam. No one is brave enough to leave me disturbed, especially not in a brute manner.
“I could either sentence you to death or torture, your pick.” I tease as Liam makes his way to me. He makes himself comfortable on my desk, sitting at the edge.
“Hello brother.” He says, ignoring my question. The wide smile he has on his face is somewhat annoying. Out of anywhere else he could sit, he chose my desk.
Why are you here? I’m begging to ask but I don’t. He looks like he’s up to something yet I can’t figure it out or pinpoint at anything.
Liam holds an envelope up high to his face between two fingers. The envelope is small like it contains nothing larger than a card.
“What’s in it?”
“An invitation. Dear old uncle wants a family reunion. And more.” Liam casually responds. The hidden mockery intention is hidden behind those words. Let’s just say, Liam and I don’t have that much of a relationship with extended family. Especially with this uncle. When my parents died, the people who were the most welcoming were outsiders. Natalie, a woman not even related to us by blood took care of us like her own. Even her children thought Liam and I were their blood siblings.
“So, what will it be? Are you going?” I ask, leaning backwards in my seat.
“What choice do I have? Good old nephew will be there. Been a while since I bullied the lad.”
“Cousin.” I remind Liam. “He’s our cousin.”
Liam flips the invitation card in his hand like he’s dealing with a knife. “Po-ta-to, po-tah-to.”
I try not to flinch a muscle at his words although I feel my brows crease. He said that to vex me.
“It says to bring a plus one, who’d be yours?” Liam asks, finally getting off the desk. His grin is mischievous.
“Let me guess, you’re coming with Hazel.” I say as a matter or factly.
He stretches his hand out fully, snaps his middle finger against his thumb then points his index finger at me like someone trying to focus on an aim. “Bam.” He says, mimicking shooting, with an eye closed. I let out a sigh.
“That leaves me to go along with Kate, someone needs to keep her company.” By her, I mean Hazel. This is a non formal invitation. I guessed so because Liam is too careful to want to bring the woman he warns me about getting in danger right into danger’s fawns.
“With that, I’ll take my leave. Enjoy doing the boring stuff.” He drops the envelope on my desk and walks to the door.
“Liam. . .” The moment I call his name, his body halts immediately. I want to ask him about our parent’s murderer but I change my mind. “Don’t get killed on your way to wherever. We both know your annoying nature has no bounds.” I say instead.
“I’ll be sure to bring the danger to you and keep myself safe.” He turns his head slightly backwards then winks at me. That brat! He’s lucky that he’s my brother. And that I love him. I watch the door shut behind him as he exits the room. This is when I sigh heftily, deep in thought. If Hazel is going to be there, I would rather she be like a ghost, insignificant to most there. My family is no saint. Each of us have indulged in one sinful deed after the other and blood shed is something we’re all accustomed to.
It’s a wonder that our misery did not bring us together but rather left us separated, because after all, who better to keep you company and sane aside someone who shares your pain in every way?
I let out an exhale, stretching my hand forward to reach for the invite. Once my hand grabs it, I bring it to me and take the card out of the envelope. I read carefully. A scoff leaves my lips. Someone seeing this would think there is love between us.
My eyes settles on the date. The event is in a week and half. Not bad. What better way to ignite my rage while keeping me distracted at the same time? Right after this event is when I’ll strike. When I put an end to my parent’s killer, bringing justice to their name and peace to them finally.
I drop the invitation card on my desk. Just immediately, my phone screen lights up. I lower my gaze to it. It’s a text from Hazel.
I pick up my phone to look at it.
‘We’ll be back home this week. Will we be able to see then?’
A half grin forms on my lips. Yes, maybe we will.
