Chapter 8 The Spirit Awakening

With Director Wang’s nod, Susan felt relieved. In fact, during their surveillance of He Li, they had also noticed this. He Li could enter various emotions at will,

Rational, cold, melancholic, and sometimes he would just chuckle foolishly.

“I’m here today to formally invite you to join our Spiritual Management Committee, through Director Wang’s introduction,” Susan answered He Li’s very direct question from earlier.

He Li didn’t respond, calmly looking at Susan. Susan was also looking at He Li.

Director Wang, standing beside them, felt awkward in the silent atmosphere. He glanced at the two of them, then slowly stood up and pushed open the door, leaving the office to them.

When superhumans discuss matters, it’s best for a normal person like him not to interfere. After all, his task was complete.

Director Wang left, leaving only He Li and Susan in the entire office.

“Ask her directly why she’s been monitoring you,” Xiao Yue said from the side, his eyes fixed on Susan, hoping to glean some clue or useful information from her facial expressions and subtle body movements after this question.

“Is the prerequisite for inviting me to join the Spiritual Management Committee to monitor me for a year?” He Li asked directly.

“Not exactly, and not everyone has this condition.”

Susan was a little surprised that he knew they had been monitoring him. Yes, Bai Fei and Tao Xue had been discovered by him last night.

However, Susan was also quite composed and directly answered the question, admitting it while also leaving He Li with an opening for a counter-question.

He Li blinked, instinctively looking to his side. Xiao Yue nodded, “Her eyes aren’t flustered, and her tone and micro-expressions all indicate she’s not lying.”

“She’s left you an opening. You need to ask her why you have this condition of being monitored to resolve your doubts. However, this will cause you to lose the initiative in this conversation, and the final outcome will be that you join them.”

As Xiao Yue finished speaking, Jin Fang appeared on He Li’s other side, in the position where Director Wang had been sitting. He sneered, “What Xiao Yue means is nothing more than for you to join them and sell your life to them. He Li, are you really going to listen to him?”

Xiao Yue glanced at Jin Fang. “As it stands, this is the best outcome. In this dangerous world, He Li is alone. Even with our help, he’s still very vulnerable. If he joins a national organization, he’ll be much safer.”

Jin Fang let out a cold snort, and the next moment he vanished from He Li’s side, reappearing and sitting next to Susan. He wrapped his right arm around Susan’s shoulders, and his right claw blade pressed against Susan’s neck. He said,

“They are an organization that directly confronts demons. You’re telling me about safety?”

“With us protecting He Li like this, how can he get hurt? But if he joins them, he’ll be arranged to fight demons, and He Li will die even faster!”

Xiao Yue looked up, calmly at Jin Fang, and said, “They can teach He Li to cultivate spiritual energy, enhance his abilities, and unlock the second stage of his gene lock. What about us? Besides protecting him from some demon harassment, what else can we do?”

“Do you want him to live a life of mediocrity forever, working in a bookstore every day, being labeled as mentally ill, monitored for his entire life, and then dying alone?”

“That’s still better than being treated as a combat machine and selling your life for others!” Jin Fang’s emotions were a bit agitated, and he said in a deep voice, “What’s wrong with a simple life? Having enough to eat, warm clothes, and someone to rely on when trouble comes. Moreover, with us by his side, how could he be lonely?”

“He needs friends, he needs family!”

“We are his family, his friends!”

Xiao Yue frowned, displeased. “He Li needs friends who are warm and approachable. Ordinary people simply can’t accept him, but those with supernatural abilities are just right!”

Jin Fang pressed the claw blade against Susan’s fair neck. “Ask this woman now if my blade has any warmth!”

Susan looked at the stunned He Li and suddenly felt her neck was a little cold, and a little itchy. She raised her hand, wanting to scratch it.

He Li was startled and quickly said, “Captain Susan.”

Susan was startled by the address and her hand stopped in mid-air.

“Ahem… Captain Susan, why must I be monitored by you?”

After asking, He Li gave Jin Fang a deep look. Jin Fang frowned, clearly still displeased, but he released Susan and then flashed away, returning to sit beside He Li.

Huh?

It’s not cold anymore. The hospital’s air conditioning is so strange.

Susan muttered inwardly, lowered her hand, and after a moment of thought, said to He Li, “Because you are different from other awakened spiritual warriors and ability users who have unlocked their gene locks.”

“What’s different?” He Li asked. Actually, by asking this, He Li was indirectly confirming to Susan that he was indeed a spiritual warrior and an ability user.

Susan explained, “Whether it’s awakened spiritual warriors or ability users who have unlocked their gene locks, they awaken in unstable situations after birth. Some awaken after a major accident, some just by sleeping, and some awaken while walking. But no matter the form, they have one thing in common: they awaken after birth.”

“There is also a very small portion of people who possess spiritual energy and unlocked gene locks from birth. We call such people: ‘Qi Ling Zhe’ (启灵者).”

“And you, are very likely a Qi Ling Zhe.”

He Li felt a bit helpless. He really wanted to tell Susan that he wasn’t a Qi Ling Zhe, just an ordinary transmigration soul.

He Li said in a deep voice, “Even so, that’s not a reason for you to monitor me. I need a reasonable and convincing explanation.”

Susan nodded. It was normal for He Li to have such emotions. Anyone would be annoyed if they were constantly monitored.

Susan explained, “Qi Ling Zhe are different from other post-natal awakened spiritual warriors and ability users. For Qi Ling Zhe, spiritual energy and abilities are like instincts deep within their subconscious. When they use them, it’s a natural reaction, much like a tiger stalking prey by crouching in the grass – it’s an innate instinct. Post-natal awakened individuals, however, require training.”

“Some Qi Ling Zhe might never use their spiritual energy or abilities in their entire lives, but if they accidentally unleash them, the powerful and uncontrollable abilities could cause unpredictable consequences.”

“Unpredictable consequences?” He Li asked.

Susan said solemnly, “For example… spiritual energy outpouring, ability loss of control, instantly killing all living beings within a few hundred meters. Although such cases are rare, there have been a few both domestically and internationally.”

He Li understood. To make an inappropriate analogy, some people are born carrying a missile, and they might never detonate it in their lives. But once it detonates, everyone within the blast radius will die.

Susan continued, “Although Qi Ling Zhe are born with spiritual energy, it is hidden within their bodies and cannot be awakened through external interference. Theoretically, they are like people who possess treasure but cannot use it, and no one, not even the Qi Ling Zhe themselves, has the key to unlock it. To unlock the treasure, luck and coincidence are needed.”

“Furthermore, this is not just monitoring, but also protection. Qi Ling Zhe are the most delicious food for demons.”

“Therefore, among the various ways we identify Qi Ling Zhe, one of the conditions is who is targeted by demons the most.”
