Chapter 75: Chapter 75: The Aftermath (Part 1)
"Ugh..."
A low, pained sound escaped from a man’s lips as consciousness slowly crept back into his exhausted body.
His eyelids felt like they weighed a thousand pounds, and every muscle in his frame screamed with the kind of deep fatigue that comes from pushing way beyond human limits.
Trying to raise himself up, he immediately noticed something odd.
He was wearing clean clothes.
A soft blanket covered his body.
And he was lying on what felt like an actual bed instead of cold, hard ground.
"Where...?"
His vision was still blurry as he attempted to focus on his surroundings, but the shapes around him gradually became clearer.
Stone walls. Rough-hewn but carefully crafted. A small opening that let in natural light.
This wasn’t a cave exactly, but some kind of primitive stone house that had been built with surprising skill.
And he was completely alone.
Just him, the bed, his Dawnbreaker at the side, some dirty clothes, bloodied bandages, and a small mirror that had been placed conveniently on a wooden table beside him.
Curious despite his confusion, he reached for the mirror and immediately caught sight of his reflection.
"Damn..."
His face looked like absolute shit.
Dark circles under his eyes. Pale skin. Hair sticking up in every direction like he’d been electrocuted.
He looked exactly like someone who’d recently died and somehow came back to life.
Wait.
That’s exactly what had happened, wasn’t it?
As the memories started settling back into his mind like puzzle pieces finding their proper places, Nero’s hand instinctively moved to his chest.
The memory of that cursed blade punching straight through his heart was crystal clear.
The sensation of his life ending in an explosion of dark energy.
The feeling of his consciousness drifting away into nothingness.
At that time Nero was sure he was absolutely fucked.
"..."
With trembling fingers, he pulled up his shirt to examine where the supposed-to-be large breathing hole in his chest should have been.
But there was nothing.
No scar, no mark, no indication that anything had ever pierced his chest.
Just smooth, unmarked skin over a steadily beating heart.
A deep sigh of relief escaped his lips as reality sank in.
Somehow and impossibly, he was alive.
*Creak...*
The sound of a wooden door opening made him look up.
And there she was.
Aurelia.
But she looked quite... different.
Not dramatically different, but there were subtle changes that his enhanced instincts picked up immediately.
Her hair seemed to catch subtle light in ways that defied normal physics.
Her golden eyes held depths that spoke of experiences, steadfast confidence and clarity.
And her presence felt more substantial somehow, like she carried the weight of eons within her divine form.
... But right now, all of that divine majesty was completely overshadowed by the expression on her face.
"!!!"
Pure shock.
Like she was staring at a ghost that had just walked out of its own grave.
Her normally composed, stoic features had cracked entirely, revealing raw emotion that Nero had only glimpsed in rare, vulnerable moments.
It was actually kind of comical to be honest, considering how unshakeable her composure usually was.
And the sight made him chuckle weakly as he decided to break the awkward silence with his usual approach.
"Surprise! I guess I barely survived after all..."
He grinned and jokingly opened his arms in an exaggerated welcoming gesture.
"Where’s my ’welcome back’ hug? I think I’ve earned at least— huh...?"
But before he could finish the teasing comment, something unexpected happened.
*Thud!*
A warm body suddenly collided with his as Aurelia launched herself forward without any warning.
Her arms wrapped around him in an embrace so tight it nearly knocked the breath out of his lungs.
"!!!"
The impact stunned him completely.
This wasn’t like her usual composed responses to everything.
This was more desperate and emotional.
Something that wasn’t like her.
And as he held her trembling form against his chest, Nero finally noticed something that made his heart clench with guilt.
She was trembling.
Not from cold or exhaustion, but from the kind of deep emotional trauma that comes from watching someone precious die right in front of you.
Her grip on him tightened even more, like she was trying to prevent him from disappearing again.
... Like she was afraid this might be another cruel dream.
"..."
The realization made him realize how much he had made her worried.
This strong, unshakeable angel who’d dominated every battlefield they’d faced together was completely shaken by his death.
Although he usually downplayed their relationship as more of a very close companion with a give and take relationship between a Lord and a summon.
He thought that she didn’t really see him as something "more" other than a Lord to serve and protect.
But this action completely shattered his view of that.
"..."
The guilt crashed over him in waves as he understood what his sacrifice had cost her.
Gently, he began patting her head with one hand,
"... I guess I really almost died, huh?"
’Almost’ was putting it lightly.
He’d actually died completely, his heart obliterated by that cursed attack.
Whatever miracle had brought him back was still a mystery, though he had a faint memory of that beautiful black-haired woman from what he’d initially thought was a dream.
Something told him it had been much more than that.
But those thoughts could wait.
Right now, all that mattered was comforting the trembling angel in his arms.
"Sorry... I made you worry."
The apology came out quieter than intended, filled with genuine regret for putting her through such pain.
In response, he felt Aurelia shake her head on his shoulder.
A silent denial.
She wasn’t blaming him for his choice.
But through their mental connection, he could sense the overwhelming emotions radiating from her.
Guilt. Regret. Self-reproach.
She was blaming herself for his death.
For not being strong enough to protect him.
For failing in her duty as both his knight and his first summon.
"Hey."
Nero’s voice became gentler as he tried to ease that burden.
"As you can see, I’m fine now, alright? You don’t need to blame yourself for anything. In the first place, I’m the one who made the decision to take that hit and protect you. So that’s why—"
He started to pull back slightly, wanting to look her in the face while he spoke.
But the moment he tried to create distance between them, Aurelia’s grip tightened desperately.
She pressed her body even closer against him, refusing to let go.
"... P-Please..."
Her voice was barely a whisper, so quiet he almost missed it.
"Just let me stay in this position... even for just a while...?"
The words hit him like a physical blow.
That broken, vulnerable tone from someone who was normally so composed and confident made his heart break all over again.
This was a side of Aurelia he’d never seen before.
Desperate, afraid and very much vulnerable...
"..."
For a moment, he was silent as the weight of her pain settled over him.
Then, softly:
"Sure."
And just like that, time seemed to slow down around them.
They stayed locked in that embrace as minutes ticked by, neither one willing to break the moment.
It was a time for reflection, for processing everything that had happened.
For both of them to come to terms with how close they’d come to losing each other forever.
Outside their small stone shelter, the world had been transformed in ways that would have been impossible to imagine just days before.
***
*CRASH! BANG! THUD!*
The sounds of construction and organization filled the air as survivors worked to rebuild their lives in a world that had fundamentally changed around them.
What had once been their makeshift camp was now something entirely different.
The violent earthquakes and dimensional shifts had completely destroyed their original shelters, but the dramatic landscape changes had also provided new opportunities.
*RUMBLE... CRACK!*
Where there had once been flat grassland, massive stone formations now jutted from the earth like natural fortifications.
Underground springs had burst to the surface, creating fresh water sources.
And most importantly, several survivors with earth manipulation abilities had worked together to transform the raw geological chaos into something resembling a proper settlement.
Rebecca’s death had been a loss, but other survivors had stepped up to fill the gap.
*WHOOSH! CRACK! SHAPE!*
Walls of stone had been carved directly from the mountain-like formations, creating a natural base that would have taken months to build under normal circumstances.
Windows had been cut at strategic points for visibility and ventilation.
Rooms had been hollowed out with precision that spoke of magical enhancement.
The entire settlement now looked like something between a fantasy castle and a modern survival compound.
But it was far from finished.
Everywhere he looked, people were busy with various tasks.
Scavenging supplies from the wreckage of their old camp.
Organizing food distribution from their limited stores.
Setting up new security protocols for a world where the danger level had jumped dramatically.
And at the center of it all...
*CLANG! BANG! ORGANIZE!*
"Move those medical supplies to the eastern wing!"
"I need 3 people to help carry water from the new spring!"
"Has anyone seen my toolkit? I left it near the old cooking area!"
Jina Martinez... a.k.a. Jin was coordinating everything with the kind of natural leadership that made people instinctively follow her orders.
Despite the injuries she’d sustained during their battle with Rebecca and Vincent’s forces, she seemed to have recovered enough to take charge of the reconstruction efforts.
Her voice carried across the settlement as she assigned tasks, resolved disputes, and kept everyone focused on survival rather than despair.
Near the medical area, Gilbert was working alongside several other survivors who’d developed healing-related abilities.
Their makeshift hospital was a constant hub of activity as they treated injuries from both the recent battles and the ongoing environmental hazards.
Among them, Nero was surprised to see Robert and Lisa Chen.
The father and daughter duo he’d helped rescue what felt like a lifetime ago were both looking healthy and active.
Robert was helping to organize supply inventories with his business background, while little Lisa had apparently developed some kind of minor healing ability that made her useful in the medical wing.
It was a relief to see them not just alive but thriving in their new circumstances.
But as Nero and Aurelia finally emerged from their stone shelter, ready to rejoin the world, Jin noticed their approach immediately.
*Clap! Clap!*
She dusted off her hands and walked over to meet them with that same easy grin she’d worn before.
