Capítulo 841: Chapter 841: Has Your Child Run Away from Home Again?
Scarlett Jennings looked at Callum Yuan and Hannah Hearne, then at the familiar help-seeker in front of her, and her expression turned silent for a moment.
The help-seeker was a cat demon mom. She stared at Scarlett Jennings for quite a while, then sniffed her and quickly reacted, pointing at her,
“You’re that person! I don’t want you to take my case. Why do you keep taking my requests?! Do you have some ulterior motive against me?”
This cat demon mom was also Scarlett Jennings’ first task when she joined the Mystic Regulation Office, and it was also from her that Scarlett received her first complaint.
The reason being, well, she was human.
…
Isn’t this quite the coincidence?
“Did your child run away from home again?”
Scarlett Jennings remembered that the last time this family’s cub ran away because it wanted to become a celebrity cat on the internet.
It ended up sneaking into a pet blogger’s house, occupying it as its own, until she tracked it down and brought it back to this cat demon mom.
“None of your business!”
The cat demon mom was still bristling; humans are no good.
Hannah Hearne, not entirely sure what was going on, kindly provided an explanation,
“This demon friend got the wrong idea; she’s not human, she’s a half-demon.”
As she spoke, she pulled Scarlett Jennings a bit closer to the cat demon mom,
“Why don’t you take another sniff?”
Scarlett Jennings stood with a poker face, allowing the cat demon mom to sniff her for a while longer.
The latter finally detected a faint scent of demonic power, her expression softened a bit, but she still muttered,
“She really is a half-demon, yet last time she fooled me into thinking she’s human…”
Scarlett Jennings: …
Last time, she really was an authentic human.
“Anyway, let’s talk about your child.”
With Scarlett’s reminder, the cat demon mom remembered the main issue,
“After the last incident, I educated him, and he listened. I told him to cultivate diligently so that when he could smoothly transform into a complete human form, I’d send him to the Mystic Academy. He’s been well-behaved since then, and later even made a friend, a little imp sprite from outside.”
The cat demon mom said,
“I thought the little imp sprite was well-behaved, so I didn’t interfere with them. But then, a few days ago, that imp sprite suddenly spirited my cub away!
It wasn’t long ago that external demons were abducting imp sprites, right? Now that I think about it, that imp sprite must be one of those traffickers! Just like human traffickers who use kids to lure other kids, my child definitely was taken away like that!”
The more the cat demon mom talked, the more furious she became; an unknown tail even poked out and slapped the ground with a loud thud.
Scarlett Jennings just glanced and withdrew her gaze, then asked some more about that external imp sprite, routinely asking the cat demon mom for a tuft of fur and obtaining an item that carried the scent left by the imp sprite.
Hannah Hearne saw her seriously asking all around and couldn’t help giving her advice when they came out,
“You don’t have to be so earnest, most tasks assigned to us by the Mystic Regulation Office are small matters like finding lost cats and dogs. Those two imp sprites are probably just playing somewhere and forgot to come back; it happens a lot.”
The tasks that get assigned to the Special Demon Squad are mostly trivial, and Hannah Hearne doesn’t even bother with them.
Yet Scarlett Jennings thought it was something important and insisted on going along, huh~
Hearing her mention finding cats and dogs, Scarlett Jennings remembered her very first task, realizing that Cassian Wolf was just using her as auxiliary personnel back then.
But she didn’t bother to get angry over such things, though she did feel things weren’t as the cat demon mom said, so she properly investigated the whereabouts of the two imp sprites.
Hannah Hearne and Callum Yuan watched as she directly input the demon energy of the two imp sprites into the Spiritual Affairs APP, and after some operations, two location icons actually appeared on the phone in no time.
Even Callum Yuan couldn’t help but show a hint of surprise in his eyes.
And Hannah Hearne, even more so, said, “You can use the Spiritual Affairs APP like this??”
She had always treated it as a trading platform and gossip forum.
Scarlett Jennings, after all, was an official employee of the Spiritual Affairs, and she replied,
“The functions developed by Spiritual Affairs are varied. If used well, they can occasionally replace some magic directly.”
The Demon Clan had only been using the Spiritual Affairs for two months, so it was understandable that it was unfamiliar.
But as far as she knew, demons tracked either by sensing energy or purely by scent.
Though that method could also find the target, Scarlett Jennings still preferred using human scientific methods to find people.
The three followed the map directions and then, all the way to the stone boundary of the Capital Metropolitan area.
Hannah Hearne’s expression, which had been relatively relaxed, now inevitably grew a bit heavy,
“They’ve left the Capital Metropolitan? Could it be that the cat cub really got abducted?”
Scarlett Jennings also looked at the map but said,
“It’s uncertain whether there was an abduction, but shortly after leaving the Capital Metropolitan, the two imp sprites split up.”
If the cat cub was spirited away by the external imp sprite, the two shouldn’t have separated.
Callum Yuan looked at the two different locations displayed on Scarlett Jennings’ phone and said,
“Once we find both, we’ll know what happened.”
Scarlett Jennings glanced at him and said, “Then let’s split up and take action.”
Saying this, before the two could respond, she directly added,
“I’ll go find the cat cub; you two go after that imp sprite.”
Hannah Hearne initially wanted to oppose since letting a freshman search alone wasn’t okay. Then she saw Scarlett Jennings silently pull out an employee ID of the Mystic Regulation Office.
Although she was a newbie in the Special Demon Squad, she was an officially registered member of the Mystic Regulation Office.
And so, Scarlett Jennings parted ways with them.
After they left, Shellback and Liora Gold popped their heads out.
Liora Gold, already sensing Araminta Gold’s position, was eager to lead the way.
But Scarlett Jennings still followed the direction indicated by her phone, causing Liora Gold to tilt her head slightly confused, and Shellback asked,
[Aren’t we going to find Samuel Chalmers?]
Scarlett Jennings simply said, “I am looking for him, but first, I must complete what’s necessary.”
The task was an excuse, but she couldn’t just leave the missing cat cub alone to look for Samuel Chalmers.
Finding the cat cub first and then searching for Samuel Chalmers wasn’t too late.
However, to save time, she had to pick up speed.
Demonic power spread from her feet. After several months of cultivation, Scarlett Jennings had learned how to control her demonic power for rapid movement without manifesting a tail.
Scarlett Jennings dashed swiftly along the path beneath the highway and, in less than two hours, finally reached the location of the cat cub.
This was at the edge of a village near the neighboring province of the Capital Metropolitan.
As Scarlett Jennings approached the indicated direction, she could faintly smell the weak demon energy belonging to the cat cub.
However, apart from the scent of the cat cub, she also picked up on many complicated smells, among which was a trace of blood.
Suspecting a certain possibility in her heart, she quieted her footsteps and walked toward a truck parked outside a certain yard.
This place was sparsely populated; even if there was some unusual noise, it wouldn’t attract much attention.
The closer she got, the clearer the faint cries became in her ears.
Until she reached the front of the truck and lifted the tarpaulin covering it.
The oncoming complex scent made her pause in breathing slightly, and upon seeing the contents of the truck, Scarlett Jennings’ pupils constricted slightly.
Inside the truck were dozens of big iron cages neatly arranged, and inside the cages were hundreds or even thousands of cats and dogs, crammed in tight.
Scarlett Jennings immediately spotted a small orange cat within one of the cages.
It was squeezed into a corner, dirty and barely alive. Yet upon seeing her, a glimmer of light sparked in its beautiful cat eyes.
Meanwhile, elsewhere.
In a certain warehouse, Samuel Chalmers was also standing in front of a cage.
And inside the cage was a small young boy, obviously abused and covered in injuries, with a dog’s tail.
