Chapter 487: Chapter 487: She Knows Too Much
Upon hearing Shuangshuang mention her job, Lin Zhiyi was momentarily taken aback.
Shuangshuang had already started her marriage leave early for the wedding and was currently not working at all.
Moreover, after she started dating, she transferred to an administrative position.
Just yesterday in the group chat, she said not to mention work to her, as it made her irritable.
Yet today, she’s bringing it up on her own.
Seeing Shuangshuang smiling brightly, Lin Zhiyi thought perhaps she was overthinking and gave a faint smile.
“It’s okay.”
Shuangshuang propped her chin with her hand: “What’s up? Can’t you talk about it? Aren’t we all good friends, and aren’t you designing the commemorative jewelry for the Gong Group’s charity gala? That’s a big deal!”
Upon hearing this, Lin Zhiyi paused.
“How did you know?”
“Ah? I just… I just…”
Shuangshuang hemmed and hawed and then fell silent.
Dazhu stood up quickly to pour tea: “It’s hard to get together, and you still talk about work. Aren’t you tired? Shuangshuang, how are the wedding preparations going?”
Shuangshuang changed the topic: “Almost done, you guys should be my bridesmaids then.”
Fang Lai’er nodded with her manicured nails: “No problem. Zhiyi, you just got back, you might be busy, right?”
Lin Zhiyi looked at Shuangshuang helplessly and made an excuse.
“Sorry, Shuangshuang, I’ve been too busy lately, I probably can’t be your bridesmaid.”
She had a child.
Although young people nowadays don’t really mind, the elders are more particular about these things.
She didn’t want to hide it, nor did she want to leave any potential problems.
Shuangshuang stared at Lin Zhiyi: “Looks like President Xue thinks highly of you. Don’t you have a lot of influence in the studio then?”
As the topic circled back, Lin Zhiyi had lost her appetite.
“No, I’m still in the probationary period.”
“You’re too modest. Don’t forget us when you get any perks later.” Shuangshuang stared directly at Lin Zhiyi.
Even Dazhu and Fang Lai’er didn’t know how to respond.
Lin Zhiyi just smiled without saying anything.
Fortunately, the waiter knocked and brought in the dishes to ease the awkwardness.
Halfway through the meal, Lin Zhiyi’s phone lit up.
It was a message from Gong Chen.
“Not finished eating yet?”
“I just started not long ago.” Lin Zhiyi replied.
“It’s been long enough, Xingxing and I have finished two episodes of cartoons.”
Attached below was a picture of the father and daughter leaning on the couch.
It was obviously taken by Xingxing.
Both of them had drooping puppy ears, really amusing.
Lin Zhiyi couldn’t help but laugh a little.
Noticing this, Shuangshuang quickly asked, “Zhiyi, what made you so happy? Is it your fiancé?”
Upon hearing this, Lin Zhiyi’s smile faded.
She hesitated as she looked at Shuangshuang: “Fiancé?”
The only one who could be called her fiancé was Sang Li.
After Sang Ran died, Sang Li felt the situation was full of suspicious points, so the cancellation of the engagement was postponed.
At least it gave her an identity to lean on.
However, the matter of the fiancé, after causing a stir for two days in Gang City, silently ended under Gong Chen’s control.
Even the briefly appearing Xingxing was turned into a child imagined by Du Qian’s mental illness.
So not many people knew.
Especially in Jing City.
She wasn’t someone important, who would keep watching her?
So how did Shuangshuang know?
Seeing the situation wasn’t right, Dazhu immediately put down his chopsticks to smooth things over.
“Shuangshuang, what are you saying? Where did Zhiyi get a fiancé?”
“She has one, it’s Mr. Sang. Zhiyi, you’re really something, keeping it from us.”
Shuangshuang ignored Dazhu’s look and spoke directly.
Lin Zhiyi silently took a deep breath, looking at Shuangshuang with wary eyes.
Just as she was thinking, Fang Lai’er suddenly stood up.
“I need to go to the restroom, is anyone going?”
As she spoke, she gave Lin Zhiyi a look.
Lin Zhiyi did feel a bit stifled, so she stood up and went with her: “I’ll go with you.”
The two walked out of the box one after the other, and Lin Zhiyi secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
“Zhiyi, are you okay?” Fang Lai’er asked as they walked.
“I’m fine. Just thought Shuangshuang seemed a bit strange.”
Lin Zhiyi hadn’t seen them for three years, so she could only probe indirectly.
Fang Lai’er frowned slightly: “Indeed, in fact, I haven’t seen her in a long time either. She suddenly contacted me, asking if I was still in touch with you and wanted to have a meal together.”
“What? This gathering wasn’t organized by you?” Lin Zhiyi was a bit surprised.
“I did, but when she mentioned it, I thought it’s been so long since we met, it would be nice to gather. After all, she’s getting married soon, and it will be hard to meet in the future.”
As Fang Lai’er spoke, she shook her head.
Lin Zhiyi asked: “Why would it be hard?”
“Don’t you know? Shuangshuang’s husband’s family has a lot of rules, even the number of flowers embroidered on the shoes she wears into the house is monitored. Do you think she’ll be able to come out often after marriage?”
“Though Shuangshuang is naive, she’s not someone who can be easily manipulated. How could she agree to marry?” Lin Zhiyi was puzzled.
“For money, I guess. It seems like her husband’s company has always wanted to collaborate with Gong Group.” Fang Lai’er mentioned casually.
Hearing this was also related to Gong Group.
Lin Zhiyi clenched her hands into fists, doubting Shuangshuang’s true intentions in reaching out to her.
After using the restroom.
With doubts in her heart, Lin Zhiyi returned to the box.
Perhaps Dazhu had reminded Shuangshuang while they were away.
The rest of the time, Shuangshuang did not mention the topic of the fiancé again.
Watching Shuangshuang eagerly discuss her upcoming wedding, Lin Zhiyi’s unease somewhat eased.
In both past and present lives, Shuangshuang had helped her.
She couldn’t just speculate about Shuangshuang’s intentions based on a few words.
As the meal was coming to an end, Shuangshuang looked up at Lin Zhiyi and walked over to her side.
“Zhiyi, this is my husband’s business card. Aren’t you designing jewelry for the Gong Group? If there’s a chance, say a few good words for us.”
Lin Zhiyi was momentarily stunned.
She stood up and refused: “Shuangshuang, I think you’re mistaken, I don’t have the ability to help you.”
Shuangshuang’s face turned pale, gripping the business card tightly: “Just give it a try.”
She helplessly shook her head: “Sorry, Shuangshuang.”
Shuangshuang put the business card down and immediately turned to leave: “Let’s go.”
Lin Zhiyi reached out to pull her back, to explain, but she dodged.
Seeing this, Dazhu comforted: “Zhiyi, don’t mind it.”
“Hmm.”
Lin Zhiyi nodded, but she felt a bit regretful inside.
It was hard to get together, only to end on a sour note.
As they left the restaurant, Shuangshuang went straight to her car, and Fang Lai’er also excused herself to leave first.
Dazhu said: “Zhiyi, let me give you a ride.”
“No need, you just got a call from a client, go ahead and take care of that.” Lin Zhiyi smiled.
“Sorry about that, I’ll treat you all to dinner another day.”
“Okay.”
Watching Dazhu leave, Lin Zhiyi took a deep breath.
She took out her phone to hail a cab when she received a message.
“Look to your left.”
Lin Zhiyi instinctively looked to her left.
A figure emerged from behind a tree.
The man was wearing a long black coat, with a dark red scarf covering half of his face.
The half of the face that was visible was deep-set and strikingly structured, with slightly drooping eyes that looked languid and indifferent.
He stared at Lin Zhiyi: “Aren’t you coming over?”
Lin Zhiyi walked over.
Before she could speak, her hand was pulled over by the man.
“Why stand so far away?”
Lin Zhiyi didn’t pull her hand back and let him hold it.
“Why are you here?”
“You didn’t reply to my message, I thought something had happened.”
“Then why didn’t you come in?” Lin Zhiyi asked suspiciously.
“I have no name or status, how could I introduce myself inside?”
Gong Chen, towering above her, surprisingly sounded a bit grieved.
Lin Zhiyi chuckled: “Let’s go back.”
As she turned around, Gong Chen pulled her back and wrapped her in his arms.
“You looked so upset when you came out, what happened?”
