Gentle Sleep Instructor
Chapter 154 Calculation
"Don't think so much, you'll find out sooner or later," Jiang Cheng stopped, already able to see Anping Inn in the distance.
Three-story buildings were rare in the town.
The flow of time in this world was becoming increasingly strange. The nights were abnormally long, and the days were especially short. It was already close to noon, after spending only a short time at the Town History Museum.
The pedestrians on the street were also acting strangely, as if wandering aimlessly. The shops along the street and the hawkers selling goods were also lifeless.
If one had to describe it, it was that everyone's performance was not unusual, but when merged together, it seemed very strange.
Jiang Cheng had experienced similar situations. This was a sign that the mission was about to end.
The two stopped some distance away from Anping Inn. Today, the inn gave them a strange feeling. They changed their angle, and from where they stood, they could see the front of the inn.
The inn's doors were tightly closed, and all the exposed windows were also shut. A sign saying "Closed" was hanging on the door.
Clearly, there was a problem inside.
"Maybe the village chief and the others have arrived," Chen Xiaomeng hid in the shadows, coldly observing the movements near the inn. She turned to look at Jiang Cheng, "They're lying in wait inside, waiting for us to walk right into their trap."
Jiang Cheng thought for a moment, then suddenly said, "Where do you think our accomplice who arrived before us is now?"
"Accomplice?"
Chen Xiaomeng instinctively rejected the word, but she couldn't deny that it was very suitable here. She didn't bother arguing about Jiang Cheng's wording, because it was useless.
"Maybe they've already been caught," she said bluntly.
After all, the culprit, Qian Jianxiu, was hiding here, so Anping Inn was the final destination for everyone.
The village chief and the others naturally knew this as well.
"Not necessarily," Jiang Cheng said after thinking, "From the fact that she tore off that page of information, it can be seen that she is targeting other players who might still be alive."
Chen Xiaomeng raised her eyebrows, "What exactly are you trying to say?"
"You can see that there's a problem with Anping Inn, wouldn't she be able to see it too?" Jiang Cheng stared at the location of Anping Inn, feeling increasingly uneasy.
After a long while, Jiang Cheng continued, "If I were her, after realizing that there was a problem inside the inn, I would lurk nearby, and then wait for some fool to go in first and test the waters for me."
"If it's safe, then I'll go in."
"But she's not you," Chen Xiaomeng said bluntly, "I don't think she would give up such a good opportunity. You and I both know that the longer we drag this out, the worse it will be for all of us."
What Chen Xiaomeng said also made sense. If they waited for the village chief to gather his men and ambush them inside Anping Inn, they would be unfamiliar with the place, and it would be difficult for them to have a chance of winning.
That secretive woman definitely knew this as well.
"I don't care, you go if you want to," Jiang Cheng pretended to be very afraid of death.
Chen Xiaomeng felt annoyed just looking at him.
Hesitation leads to trouble. Chen Xiaomeng, who had been struggling in nightmares for some time, fully understood the meaning behind this saying. Although the man in front of her was cautious, his excessive caution would only end up killing him.
For some reason, after realizing that there was a flaw in Jiang Cheng's thinking, she couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief. It seemed that this was how a normal person should behave.
"You can stay here and wait to die!" This was the last sentence Chen Xiaomeng said to Jiang Cheng before leaving.
Jiang Cheng grunted, expressing his dissatisfaction.
Although Chen Xiaomeng had made up her mind to enter Anping Inn, she still made ample preparations before entering.
What Jiang Cheng said was not without reason. She first circled the inn, but did not find any signs of the "accomplice," or the village chief and others lying in ambush.
Then, she quietly sneaked to an inconspicuous wall of the inn. After confirming that there was no one around, she pushed the window hard. To her surprise, she actually managed to push it open.
The window was ajar, not locked.
The room was relatively dark. She first narrowed her eyes to let them adjust to the darkness, then got up and jumped in.
She was very agile, and only made a slight sound when she landed.
This was the private room where they had eaten before.
It was not large, and the furnishings were very simple. A round table was placed in the center, surrounded by seven or eight chairs, crooked and distorted, no different from when they left.
However, the door to the private room was closed, so the room was relatively dark.
From the moment she landed, she had not moved, nor had she made any sound. Her ears were perked up, trying to listen to the surrounding movements.
Her hearing was excellent, which was her advantage. In a very quiet environment, she could keenly sense the breathing and even the heartbeat of people nearby.
Through this ability, which could be described as an early warning system, she had survived many nightmares.
She remained silent for about a minute. Apart from the occasional sound of the wind outside the window, she did not hear any other noise. The entire three-story building seemed to be completely dead, inside and out.
She held her breath and stood up, slowly walked to the door, and then grabbed the doorknob, pulling the door open a tiny crack.
The lobby outside was the same, empty.
Even the door to the kitchen was closed. She even wondered if the owner of the inn had heard the news and run away with his younger sister, Qian Jianxiu.
Just as she was considering her next step, she suddenly heard a strange noise behind her.
She immediately turned around and suddenly saw a head outside the window.
Jiang Cheng was looking in sneakily. Perhaps because he couldn't see clearly, he narrowed his eyes slightly. The wind blew his bangs into a middle part, making him look just like a collaborator from the Anti-Japanese War.
After watching for a while, he seemed to see Chen Xiaomeng, and then his face turned red. He first struggled to step one leg in, then his entire body squeezed in.
After landing, he immediately scurried to Chen Xiaomeng's side and asked in a low voice, "I thought about it for a long time, and I'm still worried about you coming in alone."
These words sounded different to Chen Xiaomeng, because she suddenly remembered a sentence that Jiang Cheng had said before: If I were her, after realizing that there was a problem inside the inn, I would lurk nearby, and then wait for some fool to go in first and test the waters for me.
Wait for some fool...
Although Chen Xiaomeng forced herself not to jump to conclusions, the truth was right in front of her.
She had chosen such a remote location to enter in order to avoid Jiang Cheng taking advantage of her, but she didn't expect Jiang Cheng, the shameless one, to follow right behind her.
Jiang Cheng secretly glanced outside the door, and after a while, he leaned back to Chen Xiaomeng's ear and said, "Don't be afraid," he swallowed, and continued to whisper, "You go out first, and I'll follow behind you. I'll protect you."
Chen Xiaomeng stared at the windowsill behind Jiang Cheng's head, where a row of red clay flowerpots were placed. She suddenly had the urge to pick up a flowerpot and smash it over Jiang Cheng's head.
