Chapter 464 Lunch

Chapter 183 The Real Situation

The hospital had more empty rooms than expected. Pushing open a door, they saw several men sitting around a bed playing cards.

Judging by their clothes, they were probably the orderlies Zhao Ru mentioned.

This didn't seem like where they should be living, because the room was overly bright, with several large drying racks placed near the window.

Clothes and white sheets were hung on them.

On the way here, they had passed a place that looked like a utility room, the corridor filled with damp water stains.

Seeing Zhao Ru appear, a man dressed as an orderly stood up and walked over, looking a bit nervous, asking, "Nurse Zhao, is something the matter?"

"Where's Wu Gang?" Zhao Ru scanned the men, not finding the person she was looking for.

"He went to collect the patients' laundry," the man replied.

As soon as he finished speaking, another man walked in. He was ordinary-looking, with dark skin, probably in his early twenties, and looked quite sturdy.

Like the previous man, his face turned somewhat nervous when he saw Zhao Ru. "Nurse Zhao, you..."

"Wu Gang, have you been slacking off lately?"

"No, I haven't," Wu Gang said, widening his eyes, looking innocent.

"Then why hasn't the patient in room 906 had their clothes changed?" Zhao Ru asked. "If it happens again, I'll report it."

"No, no," Wu Gang explained. "Nurse Zhao, let me explain. I always help with the laundry twice a day, morning and night."

"Did you change them today?"

"Yes, I did," Wu Gang said confidently. "Liu-ge and I went together. You can ask him if you don't believe me."

"Then why are the patient's clothes so dirty?"

"Oh dear!" Wu Gang spread his hands, looking helpless. "Nurse Zhao, we can't do anything about that. Sometimes the patient has sudden fits and falls out of bed while convulsing. That's probably when they got dirty."

After saying that, Wu Gang seemed to remember something and ran off. He returned in less than a minute, holding a patient gown.

Jiang Cheng immediately recognized it as the same one the woman had been wearing.

Apparently, it had just been changed.

Blue and white stripes, with thick lines and rough workmanship. It was a style rarely seen now.

As Wu Gang displayed it, Jiang Cheng saw that the gown was covered in dust, and the cuffs were even black, giving the impression that it had been used to mop the floor.

"She fell out of bed again?" Zhao Ru frowned slightly.

"That's right," Wu Gang said. "She just suddenly had another fit. Isn't that just torturing her?"

"We went in this morning, and she was lying face down on the floor, asleep. What are we supposed to do?"

"We can't just tie her up, can we?" Wu Gang looked helpless.

Having learned the details, Zhao Ru didn't linger. She reminded Wu Gang and the others to check on her frequently and then left with Jiang Cheng.

As they left, she also reminded Wu Gang and the others to be careful when playing cards, as it wasn't allowed in the hospital.

"So, that woman... she can still move?" Jiang Cheng asked, feigning curiosity. After leaving the orderlies' room, Jiang Cheng took the medical tray.

Walking along the corridor on the fourth floor, Zhao Ru turned a corner. "Well..." Zhao Ru paused and said, "I hadn't heard about it before. It's only been recently that we've noticed she keeps falling on the floor and convulsing for no reason."

"At first, I thought something was triggering her, but I couldn't find the source," Zhao Ru sighed. "I reported it to Director Qi, but he didn't say much. He just told me to keep an eye on her and remember to give her her injections every day."

At this point, Jiang Cheng suddenly stopped.

Director Qi...

It was him again.

But Jiang Cheng didn't show anything on his face. He continued chatting casually with Zhao Ru, seemingly unintentionally asking, "Does Director Qi know this woman?"

"I'm not sure," Zhao Ru said, rubbing her arm. "But don't let Director Qi's young age fool you. He's an old-timer at our hospital."

As she said this, Zhao Ru turned her head and asked in a puzzled tone, "Don't you know Director Qi? You could ask him."

"He's so busy, it was already a big favor that he helped us transfer," Jiang Cheng said, changing the subject, complaining a bit. "But who would have thought he'd give us such a run-down room."

"The rooms on the sixth floor haven't been used in a long time." Zhao Ru seemed very surprised, but she didn't dare speak ill of Director Qi behind his back. One word from him could get her fired, so she could only say, "Maybe he wants you to have a quiet place to recover. The sixth floor is secluded, and not many people go there."

"I think he's being kind," Jiang Cheng said suddenly, smiling.

Back at the nurses' station, only Zhao Ru was there.

Zhao Ru explained that there were other nurses, but they were all downstairs. There were more wards downstairs, so they usually didn't come up unless necessary.

She mostly did odd jobs here.

Time passed quickly. It was almost 11 o'clock in the blink of an eye. Because it was raining outside, it felt gloomy.

It felt like it was already dark.

Afraid of asking too much and arousing Zhao Ru's suspicion, Jiang Cheng started chatting aimlessly with her again. Before long, he had made her very happy.

The two of them chatted more and more congenially, not noticing the few people standing not far away.

Wei Wei and Du Feng first glanced at Jiang Cheng, whose back alone showed how animated he was, and then secretly looked at Lin Wan'er.

They found that Lin Wan'er was just watching silently, without any sign of displeasure.

Like she was watching a circus.

But someone's dissatisfaction was written all over their face. "What is he doing?" Wang Changguo said indignantly. "We're risking our lives to find clues, and he's flirting with a girl?"

"Is that how he finds clues?"

"Maybe... his methods are different from ours," Yu Yu, standing next to Lin Wan'er, said. "He might just want to get something from the nurse..."

She stopped halfway, because everyone saw Jiang Cheng take the nurse's hand and gently caress it, while continuing to say something with great enthusiasm.

Wang Changguo couldn't stand it any longer and walked over, knocking on the glass door. He knocked hard enough to make the glass tremble.

Seeing Wang Changguo's long face, Jiang Cheng showed no sign of nervousness. He had just opened Zhao Ru's lunchbox, which contained her lunch.

She had brought it from home in the morning. The rice and dishes were simple, stacked together. In short, Jiang Cheng didn't find it appetizing.

And the temperature was low today, so the food was already cold.

After looking at it, Jiang Cheng didn't put the lunchbox back. Instead, he closed the lid and held it in his hand. Then he stood up and looked at Zhao Ru with expectant eyes, saying, "Can I have this? I want to taste the cooking of a beautiful woman."
