Chapter 1234: [1234] Fortunately, she’s here

“We need to give him an injection for pain relief first. Administer 50mg of Demerol intramuscularly and ask Doctor Xin to write the prescription,” Xie Wanying quickly instructed.

Sometimes, what leads to a patient going into shock isn’t merely blood loss but could also be pain. Pain can indeed be so severe that it kills. For trauma patients like this, if the pain is extreme, the doctor’s priority should be to provide adequate pain relief first.

Demerol is a controlled narcotic medication. It requires a special prescription form and must be filed separately for records.

After hearing this, Sister Seo ran off to find Xin Yanjun.

Very soon, Xin Yanjun came rushing in from the Observation Room. “What’s the situation?”

By this time, Xie Wanying had finished examining the knife wound on the patient’s inner thigh. The wound was quite deep, but fortunately, the tendons and nerves hadn’t been severed. There was, however, significant bleeding, which needed surgical suturing. Turning to answer her teacher’s question, she said, “We need to debride and suture.”

This situation would call for an emergency surgical doctor to handle it. It wasn’t necessary to call for a specialized surgical doctor from the inpatient department, as this case didn’t fall under the orthopedic specialty.

“Doctor Li left with the ambulance and hasn’t returned yet. Doctor Yin is busy performing a catheterization,” Sister Seo promptly reported the situation to the two of them.

Catheterization? Does that require a doctor? Isn’t catheterization typically something a nurse can perform?

“Prostate hyperplasia,” Sister Seo explained.

Ah, the two internal medicine doctors immediately understood.

Patients with prostate hyperplasia often experience severe urethral narrowing, making it extremely difficult for nurses to perform catheterization. In such cases, a specialized doctor’s assistance is required. These patients are usually elderly men, often suffering from urinary retention—a condition where the bladder fills up with a large amount of urine that cannot be expelled. Without catheterization to relieve the urine buildup, the pain is excruciating, forcing them to rush to the ER for relief. This is a common type of urological emergency case.

Doctor Yin, being a urologist, typically handles such cases in the ER when he’s free, providing initial emergency treatment before sending the patient to the ward.

A doctor inserting a catheter cannot simply walk away midway.

“You give him the Demerol,” Xin Yanjun instructed Sister Seo.

Sister Seo turned around and headed to the anesthetic medication cabinet with the keys.

With two emergency surgical doctors unavailable, it was fortunate that there was a surgical intern nearby. Xin Yanjun patted Student Xie’s shoulder and asked, “Can you handle the suturing yourself?”

Suturing is a basic surgical skill. Having rotated through two surgical departments and even served as Chief Surgeon on some cases in the operating room, Xie Wanying had perfected this technique. She directly nodded at Teacher Xin.

Sister Seo came in with the syringe, administered the Demerol to the injured patient, and said to Xin Yanjun, “That old lady’s daughter is here again.”

As she spoke, the voice of the elderly patient’s daughter echoed from outside. She had spotted Xin Yanjun and was calling out, “Doctor, come here. I wasn’t finished talking to you earlier. Why did you walk away?”

Encountering family members like this always gave doctors a headache. The elderly woman was critically ill, so it wasn’t appropriate for the doctor to use an excuse to walk away. But leaving her there to argue endlessly could interfere with treating other patients. Xin Yanjun had no choice but to step out first.

After administering the Demerol, Sister Seo prepared the surgical debridement tools for Xie Wanying and said, “You focus on your task. If you need anything, just call me. I’ll be outside.”

Knowing that Sister Seo had a host of other tasks to handle outside, Xie Wanying nodded. She put on a mask, changed into a pair of sterile gloves, and prepared to administer the local anesthetic to the injured patient before proceeding to suture.
