Chapter 737: Chapter 726: Looking for a Job
Leaving the recreational hall, Song Yun and the others dispersed. The task of stakeout was never-ending because you could never be certain about where the target might head to next. You could only rely on your own experience and analysis of the target’s routines. Song Yun had not been here long and, although he had grasped some basics, it was far from enough.
Therefore, the work of Black Flood Dragon and Jue Wu became extremely important. Their subordinates were scattered in various places where the target frequently appeared, recording the times of these appearances accordingly.
After wandering aimlessly on the streets for a while with Qingluan, Song Yun entered a labor market.
Song Yun, there to look for work.
As an outsider looking for jobs, if Song Yun had done nothing but eat, drink and wander aimlessly, it would have surely raised suspicions. Every year, countless migrant brother workers came to wz to work. One Song Yun, plus the over one hundred Shura Alliance elites, simply couldn’t cause even a ripple in the labor market.
Qingluan did not go job hunting with Song Yun, as she seemed to have matters to attend to and left first. The two agreed on a time to meet up to return to the inn together, and then Song Yun seriously continued his job search in the labor market.
As it was the end of the year and many migrant workers had gone home for the New Year, naturally, many places were short of labor force. The labor market was desolate, and many employers were desperately idle. There were indeed people looking for work there, but compared to the usual numbers, it was much fewer.
The labor market had all sorts of jobs on offer. Song Yun’s target was labor-intensive work, such as carrying jobs at construction sites or unloading in warehouses. Think about it, would a white-collar worker travel all the way to a place like wz just to look for an office job? That’s highly unlikely; it’s more common for manual laborers because as long as they have the strength, they can make a living anywhere.
“Young man, looking for a job?” As soon as Song Yun entered the labor market, he was greeted by someone.
“Yes, are you hiring?” Song Yun acted as clueless as a greenhorn could be.
“Yes, why not? I have temporary construction work available—helping out on site, doing whatever needs doing. The daily wage is 200 yuan and includes food and lodging, how about it?” the person asked.
“200? The New Year is just around the corner, the wage seems a bit low. Plus, I won’t be living in your lodging, saving you some money. How about giving me 250 a day?” Song Yun haggled.
“250 is too high. The rate I’m offering is already double pay for you. Normally it’s just one hundred yuan. My friend, we only have one spot left. If you miss this opportunity, there won’t be another. If you come with me to the site now, I can pay you half a day’s wage for only eight hours of work!” The employer urged fervently.
Song Yun shook his head and said, “I’ll look around some more. Could I have your business card?”
“Of course.” The person handed Song Yun a card and added, “Call me if you’re interested, but remember we only have one spot open. You’ll need to hurry.”
“Okay,” Song Yun said as he continued to walk further inside.
After several invitations from potential employers, Song Yun chose a decent job as a temporary warehouse manager, mainly responsible for moving things. He didn’t know how to manage distribution, and there were already designated staff for that in the warehouse. The wages were calculated daily, 230 yuan a day including lunch.
Song Yun quickly signed a contract with the employer and then left the labor market, elated.
On his way out, Song Yun even bought two bottles of beer.
When the agreed time came, Song Yun met the waiting Qingluan at the designated spot.
“Where did you go just now?” Song Yun curiously asked.
“I went to see an old friend,” Qingluan replied with a smile, then glanced at the beer in Song Yun’s hand and said, “Shall we go back?”
“Yeah, let’s go back,” Song Yun said, taking Qingluan’s hand and heading towards the inn.
“Yo, young man, bought some beer?” The gossipy and helpful old lady was as usual watching TV at the front desk; she smiled when she saw the beer in Song Yun’s hand.
“Mhm, got a job,” Song Yun proudly brandished his contract in front of the helpful old lady and added, “Gonna try to earn some extra money, hehe.”
“Oh? Let me have a look,” the helpful old lady stretched out her hand for the contract, and upon examining it remarked, “Not bad, a daily wage of 230. Although it’s heavy labor, it’s a lot more than usual!”
“Heh, isn’t that why I’m out working over the New Year? Our family isn’t wealthy, and I can only come out to earn some extra cash during this time,” Song Yun replied, retrieving the contract from the old lady’s hand and cheerfully heading upstairs.
“Old Chen, see that? Nowadays, young people who are willing to work hard can still get a good paycheck. Your son lazes around all day, living off you and getting into bad company. Honestly, he might be better off working hard like this young man. He could earn six or seven thousand a month,” the old lady said.
“Well… I’ll ask him about it tonight,” Old Chen hesitated and replied.
Back in his room, Song Yun set the beer and contract aside and quickly dove into analyzing and organizing intelligence. Many things can’t be accomplished just by willing them to happen, and thorough preparation is crucial. Song Yun fully appreciated this point, subscribing to the adage that sharpening one’s axe will not delay the work of cutting wood. He preferred to spend extra time sorting through mostly useless information rather than rush to confront Wang Billion.
Qingluan sat quietly by Song Yun’s side, as before, helping him with the paperwork.
Time passed as the two busied themselves.
Before going to sleep, Song Yun grabbed a bottle of beer and said, “I’ve got to finish this off, or else it won’t make sense tomorrow.”
“Mhm, I’ll drink a bottle,” Qingluan took a bottle for herself and said, “Cheers.”
Song Yun looked at Qingluan with surprise. In his memory, except for drinking at home with the girls, she seldom drank outside. The fact that she wanted to drink an entire bottle with him today was quite strange.
Although it was strange, Song Yun didn’t dwell on it. Chatting with Qingluan and snacking, they quickly finished the beer and then went to sleep on opposite sides of the room, just like the night before.
Upon waking up, after Song Yun finished washing up, he left before Qingluan, as he had to go to work.
Of course, going to work was just a cover. Song Yun’s main objective was still to stake out the area. Some might think Song Yun was being overly cautious, but he knew that the world’s top criminals often spent weeks just staking out a location. A few days for him was nothing in comparison.
Before leaving, Song Yun greeted the helpful old lady, who said with a smile, “Heading to work?”
“Yes! Raring to go!” Song Yun waved and left the inn with a smile.
The warehouse Song Yun was headed to was located below a well-known trade company in the city center.
The reason Song Yun had chosen this place was not just for the high wages, but also because it was very close to Wang Baiwan’s office—taking the elevator from the underground warehouse to the top floor would bring him directly to Wang Baiwan’s office.
Of course, one might wonder, wouldn’t someone recognize Song Yun? It should be noted that Song Yun went out in disguise. He considered himself somewhat of a public figure and thought it quite likely that he could be recognized. If that happened, it would be problematic, so he wore makeup and added facial hair, among other things, to make sure he looked different from his usual self. As for Black Flood Dragon and Jue Wu, they too were in disguise. Jue Wu wore a cap over his bald head and darkened his skin a bit, while Black Flood Dragon made similar alterations. Unless someone was very familiar with them, it would be difficult to recognize the pair.
