Lord of Illusions City
Chapter 221 A Choice of Survival
Wang Zifeng's heart leaped, but the zombie was too fast. He didn't have time to react before the zombie appeared in front of him, reaching out and snatching the blood bottle, less than a third full, from his son Xiaobao's hand.
"Yours?"
The zombie held the bottle, the scent of blood making him swallow hard. He turned to Wang Zifeng and asked.
"Yes!"
Wang Zifeng nodded, terrified.
The zombie looked at the blood bottle in his hand. He felt a powerful urge to drink it, even to grab the two people behind him, tear open their necks, and devour their flesh and blood.
But a dozen seconds later, the zombie gritted his teeth and tossed the bottle out of the broken window. He said calmly,
"Don't carry this kind of thing among the zombie horde. The scent of blood is like a lighthouse in the ocean for zombies. With this, they might even become uncontrollable."
"That's my wine! Give it back! Thief!"
To Wang Zifeng's surprise, Xiaobao, whose "wine" had been stolen, broke free from his embrace and rushed at the zombie, punching and kicking his legs, even trying to bite him!
"Biting a zombie isn't a good idea. You'd better discipline him, or he won't have a chance to grow up in this world!"
The zombie picked up Xiaobao and casually tossed him back to Wang Zifeng, saying—his words were becoming more fluent, though still with a strange, hoarse quality.
"May I... ask... are you... also a zombie?"
Wang Zifeng caught Xiaobao, covered his mouth to silence his desperate cries, and asked the zombie cautiously.
"In terms of form... yes!"
The zombie replied, then stopped speaking, striding to the door. He pushed it open and looked back at Wang Zifeng:
"Keep close! And don't let him make a sound, or... you might have to abandon him to save yourself!"
With that, the zombie walked out of the room. Wang Zifeng quickly said to Xiaobao:
"Xiaobao! Don't cry. We're going to follow this... uncle to find something good to eat. If you cry again, he won't take us! Be good!"
Hearing about food, Xiaobao finally stopped crying. Wang Zifeng quickly picked him up and followed the zombie.
In the corridor, the zombie that had chased Wang Zifeng was still there. However, with the other zombie leading the way, it simply watched Wang Zifeng and his son leave, making no attempt to attack.
Even so, Wang Zifeng was still terrified, holding his hand over Xiaobao's mouth as he carefully walked past the zombie.
The zombie led Wang Zifeng down the building and then circled around the back, occasionally glancing at another building across the way.
Wang Zifeng knew that that building was the one the young man had entered last, the one where he suspected the zombie king controlling the horde was located.
Originally, Wang Zifeng had thought that the zombie in front of him was the leader of the horde, but now it seemed unlikely. It even seemed like this zombie was secretly doing something behind the other's back.
However, Wang Zifeng just wanted to get out of here. He didn't want to get involved in the zombie's intrigue, so he kept his mouth shut and followed closely behind the zombie, carrying Xiaobao.
"Daddy, I want to drink that!"
Passing a convenience store, Xiaobao suddenly shook off Wang Zifeng's hand, pointed at the shelves, and shouted.
Wang Zifeng was startled and quickly covered his mouth again. The zombie in front turned to look at him.
"I'm sorry! My child... he's too thirsty. We've been hiding there for over two days!"
Wang Zifeng said apologetically.
"He's not suited for this world!"
The zombie looked at Wang Zifeng.
"If you leave him here, you might live a long time, maybe even see the end of this apocalypse. But if you insist on taking him, you probably won't survive a week, and you'll die because of him. Die together, or abandon one so the other can live on. You need to choose!"
"He's my son. I won't abandon him!"
Wang Zifeng shook his head without hesitation.
"Hmm!"
The zombie seemed to only want to offer advice and didn't care about his choice. Instead, he pointed at the convenience store.
"Go on! Take what you need—getting things for free might be the only good thing this world offers humans..."
Hearing the zombie's words, Wang Zifeng immediately rushed into the convenience store with Xiaobao. First, he found two of the largest woven bags the store sold, and then he began to fill them with food and water. Xiaobao also took out the half-eaten piece of bread he had hidden earlier and threw it away, grabbing whatever he liked from the shelves!
It took them more than ten minutes to finish looting, and the zombie didn't rush them, waiting patiently at the door.
As Wang Zifeng carried the two woven bags and Xiaobao out of the convenience store, the zombie couldn't help but shake his head, but he said nothing. Instead, he pointed to two other, unusually shaped zombies standing nearby.
"Alright! They'll take you out of the city. I don't know the exact location of those two people, so after they drop you off, you're on your own!"
"Okay!"
Wang Zifeng agreed without hesitation. He just wanted to leave the city, to get away from the zombies, so he didn't care who took him.
As for how to find the two people the zombie mentioned after getting out—he'd worry about that later!
So, Wang Zifeng followed the two zombies through the streets and alleys, and they quickly moved out of the zombie horde's range. Then, the two zombies found a car, let Wang Zifeng and his son get in, and drove away at high speed.
On the road, some zombies were attracted by the sound of the car, but the two zombies roared a couple of times, and the zombies immediately dispersed.
However, these two zombies were not as talkative as the previous one. All they did was roar, and they never said a word Wang Zifeng could understand. They never even spoke to each other.
Soon, the car arrived at the edge of the city. If Li Chenzhou saw this place, he would immediately recognize that this road led to Luo Hong's base.
After all, that was the direction Li Chenzhou and his group had taken when they left. If the zombie wanted to send a message to Li Chenzhou, he could only try his luck in that direction. As for where Li Chenzhou was now, or whether the man could find Li Chenzhou with his child, he couldn't be sure.
Reaching the edge of the city, the two zombies stopped. They didn't want to be seen by any survivors. They got out of the car, gestured that the car was Wang Zifeng's, and then plunged into the city's alleys, disappearing from sight.
Looking at the road ahead, free of zombies, Wang Zifeng finally breathed a sigh of relief. He looked at Xiaobao, who was sitting in the back seat, guzzling a bottle of drink, got into the driver's seat, and stepped on the gas, the car speeding forward…
