Lord of Illusions City

Chapter 255 Fighting for Family

"Clang!"

The man picked up a chair and hurled it at a window of the watchtower's rest area. Watchtowers, designed for observation, had large windows all around for excellent visibility. However, this also made containing someone within one extremely difficult.

"You're insane! That'll let the zombies out!"

Shanzi, who was outside, was shocked and yelled at the man.

The man ignored him. He took a few steps back, intending to jump out the window.

Shanzi rushed to the window, drew his own dagger, and glared at the man.

"Xiao Wu, you've been bitten. You won't survive even if you get out. You'll only end up hurting others!"

"I don't care!"

Xiao Wu screamed hysterically.

"Who says I'm going to die? I'm perfectly fine right now. Get out of my way, or don't blame me for what happens!"

As he spoke, he glanced at the zombie still tearing at his comrade. His comrade was already motionless and would likely die soon. When that happened, the zombie would shift its attention.

In fact, the zombie was currently focused on the soon-to-be-dead combatant. If Xiao Wu charged over now, he could easily kill it and put the dying man out of his misery, preventing him from turning.

But human psychology was strange. Instead of killing the zombie, Xiao Wu chose to break through Shanzi's blockade and escape.

It seemed that in his mind, Shanzi, with his dagger and watchful eyes, was easier to deal with than the zombie, which was too busy tearing flesh and enjoying its meal to pay attention to him...

"Shanzi, we fought our way out of the city together. Don't make things difficult for me!"

Xiao Wu's eyes were bloodshot as he stared at Shanzi and roared.

Shanzi didn't reply, only shook his head slightly.

"Then you can go to hell!"

Xiao Wu roared and charged forward. Ignoring the broken glass on the window frame, he jumped up, grabbed it, and lunged at Shanzi, thrusting his cleaver towards his chest.

Shanzi's dagger was much shorter than the cleaver, so Xiao Wu assumed he would dodge. This would allow him to break free and escape the prison. Although that path offered slim hope, it was better than dying now!

However, to Xiao Wu's surprise, Shanzi didn't dodge the cleaver. He allowed it to pierce his chest, going straight through.

"Why... why didn't you dodge?"

Xiao Wu was stunned. Although he was a combatant, he was just along for the ride. This was the first time his cleaver had drawn blood. He stared at Shanzi with wide eyes and asked, "This base isn't even yours. Is it worth it to fight so hard?"

"Pfft!"

Shanzi didn't answer immediately. Instead, taking advantage of their close proximity, he suddenly raised his arm and plunged his dagger into the top of Xiao Wu's head...

Xiao Wu's body instantly stiffened. His bloodshot eyes remained fixed on Shanzi, filled with questions.

"It's because this base isn't mine that I have to fight so hard!"

Shanzi stared into Xiao Wu's eyes as he replied. Then, he slowly turned his head towards the dormitory building.

"My dad, my mom, and my sister are all there. I can't let you become a zombie and hurt them! No one can!!!"

In his final moments, Xiao Wu received the answer he sought. His lips twitched, as if trying to smile or say something, but he had lost all strength. His whole body slowly slumped to the ground...

Shanzi looked at the cleaver in his chest, pulled the dagger from Xiao Wu's head, and staggered towards the door of the watchtower room. There were still two zombies there. He had to kill them before he died...

The watchtower room door wasn't locked because Xiao Wu had tried to break out earlier, but Shanzi had blocked the way. Now, Shanzi gently pulled the door open, but it was too late. His comrade was dead and had already turned into a zombie.

Hearing the door, both zombies turned towards him and charged.

Shanzi looked at the two zombies rushing towards him with ferocious expressions, but he didn't feel fear. He had a cleaver in his chest, and he probably wouldn't live much longer even without the zombies!

Shanzi was just worried about whether he could kill these two zombies and eliminate the threat to the watchtower!

He saw that other watchtowers also seemed to have zombies, but he couldn't worry about that. As long as he killed all the zombies in his watchtower, he would have done his duty, right?

Shanzi just wanted to use his death to secure better treatment for his family. After all, he had risked his life to kill all three mutated comrades in his watchtower, preventing them from leaving and threatening the base.

Because he had already accepted his death, Shanzi didn't dodge the charging zombies. But he didn't charge forward either, just standing in the doorway.

One reason was that the position was good, allowing only one zombie to attack at a time. The other was that Shanzi really didn't have much strength left.

"Pfft!"

Ignoring the zombie's hand grabbing for him, Shanzi used all his strength to thrust the dagger through the zombie's intertwined arms, piercing its eye socket and plunging directly into its brain...

The zombie's claws, which had been grabbing Shanzi's shoulder, stopped and then drooped weakly. Shanzi tried to pull out the dagger, but it was stuck in the skull. Severely wounded, he didn't have the strength to pull it out.

At that moment, the last zombie charged forward. This was the unlucky guy who had been torn apart for so long before finally dying amidst painful screams.

His body was tattered, and his upper body was mostly skinless from the bites, but the zombie didn't care. In its eyes, there was only the former teammate in the doorway.

Because the doorway was blocked by the zombie and Shanzi, the charging zombie crashed into the zombie that Shanzi had killed. The dead zombie's body tilted forward, and Shanzi, who hadn't pulled out his dagger, fell backward along with the corpse...

"Pfft!"

"Agh~!"

The blade of the cleaver that had pierced Shanzi's body struck the ground, causing it to slide backward. The movement of the blade inside him made Shanzi scream in agony. The last zombie also fell to the side. It turned to look at Shanzi, pushed itself up with its arms, and lunged...
