Chapter 329: Torrential Rain (I)
He couldn't hear the words clearly, but he could see the situation plainly. Whether it was right or wrong, in the end, he would have to be honest. Because at this point, he had to admit that this matter was beyond his control. Since that was the case, he might as well give up cleanly, at least so they wouldn't continue to suffer through this farce because of him.
He pushed open the door. The rain had suddenly become very heavy, and the sky over Jiangning was shrouded in darkness. As he walked downstairs, Xing'er and Juan'er, seeing him come down from upstairs, were both extremely surprised. He waved his hand lightly and went straight through the door. The lights weren't lit in this weather, making the living room appear dim. He went over and knocked on the bedroom door. There had been some faint noises inside, but they all quieted down at once. Ning Yi knocked again.
"I'm coming in."
After saying this, he put his hand on the doorknob and pushed it with one hand. With a "click," the bolt broke, and the door slowly opened. Ning Yi stood there for a few seconds before stepping inside, glancing around. In the dim light, Yun Zhu stood by the bed, a little embarrassed as she held her arms across her chest. Her outer robe was closed, but the sash wasn't tied, making her look like she had just gotten out of the bath and hadn't fully dressed. Su Tan'er stood not far in front of her, looking over at him, and said, "Husband." There seemed to be a gentle smile in her voice.
Ning Yi looked at them for a moment before finally turning his head away and slowly backing out of the room, closing the door. He hadn't intended to go in and talk to them directly. He hadn't been sure of things before, but now he could finally be certain. Tan'er's thinking was stranger and more direct than that of most women, as could be seen from the time she went to burn down the building with a torch.
She had invited Yun Zhu over, never mentioning anything about herself, the child, or personal feelings, partly because she was kind and didn't want to hurt anyone. But at this moment, offering such an invitation ultimately served the same purpose as it would have for any other woman: she wanted to know what she cared about most. Ning Yi had been confused by Tan'er's actions before because he cared too much and was making things too complicated. There was no need to be confused.
He hesitated upstairs for a long time. In the room downstairs, enough time had passed for many things to happen. He didn't know if Yun Zhu had taken off her clothes in the bedroom, or if anything even stranger or messier had happened. But basically, the moment Yun Zhu untied her sash, Tan'er had already gotten all the information she wanted.
He sat in the living room for a while and asked Xing'er to light the lamps. After a while, Yun Zhu helped Tan'er out of the room. Yun Zhu looked complex and secretly glanced at Ning Yi. Tan'er's expression didn't reveal much emotion. Only when Yun Zhu helped her sit down did she say a soft "Thank you."
"Husband, you're home so early..."
Tan'er said this softly, and then they began a very normal conversation. She talked about inviting Yun Zhu back to apologize and mentioned Yun Zhu's past experiences, expressing admiration. Ning Yi already knew these things. Yun Zhu seemed to have something on her mind and hesitated to speak. When Tan'er asked her to stay for dinner and invited her to see the child, she stammered and refused: "I have... some urgent matters to attend to at home. And a sister, waiting for me to go back. It's raining so hard, I think... maybe another day..."
Judging by her expression, she really did have something on her mind. Ning Yi was used to seeing all kinds of scheming, but he didn't like it when the people around him were caught up in such an atmosphere. He said a few more things, then told Xing'er to get an umbrella. He saw Yun Zhu out. When they reached the eaves, he said softly, "Don't overthink things. I'll look for you tomorrow, even if... even if..." He never finished what he wanted to say. Yun Zhu hesitated, but when she saw him like this, she said, "Actually..." But she didn't say anything. Xing'er came over with two umbrellas.
Naturally, Xing'er saw Yun Zhu out. When Ning Yi returned to the living room, the lamps flickered, and Tan'er sat there, staring blankly, holding a teacup in her hands. He thought for a moment, then went over and carried Tan'er back to the bedroom. Tan'er pressed her head into his arm and murmured, "Husband, Miss Nie was once a daughter of an official."
Ning Yi hmm'd.
"No wonder I thought she had such good bearing. After going through such things, she can still emerge untainted from the mud. Such a woman is pleasing to everyone, isn't she?"
Noncommittally, Ning Yi hmm'd again. He put her down by the bed. When her face left his arm, Su Tan'er looked at him with bright eyes and said softly, "Miss Nie really likes you..."
Ning Yi looked at her. Su Tan'er had a complex, yet clear smile on her face. She bit her lower lip and tried to smile without letting tears fall. After Ning Yi sat down on the bed, she struggled to sit up and hugged Ning Yi tightly from behind, sniffing.
"Generally speaking, when such things happen, those who are willing to visit alone are either hot-tempered and want to scold someone to their face, or they are strong, upright, and hate being wronged. But when Miss Nie came to the door, I could tell at first glance that she wasn't that kind of person. She came to the door because she likes you."
Ning Yi was silent. Su Tan'er's grasp of people's hearts was extremely keen, though not as seasoned as Ning Yi's. Yun Zhu's behavior held no secrets in her eyes. Ning Yi couldn't refute her. Tan'er hugged his body tightly, smiled, and sniffed again.
"Miss Nie is also a very sensible person. Maybe she's afraid of troubling you too much, so she came today. She may be thinking that as long as she handles things properly, others won't make wild guesses about you. But she didn't think that I'm much worse than her. I told her that you told others she was still a virgin. I didn't know how to say this to people. I wanted to see..."
Her voice trembled slightly. She paused for a moment. "Such an excessive request threw her off completely. Do you know, even though no other woman would agree to such a thing, she thought about it and actually agreed... I understood at that moment that Miss Nie really likes you... She is such a resilient woman, one who values her self-respect more than anything else, but she likes you so much that she doesn't even care about her self-respect... She could maintain her purity in the brothel, preferring to starve to death rather than give in, but she likes you so much that she doesn't even care about her self-respect..."
Tan'er murmured softly, repeating these words. Ning Yi listened quietly, and after a moment, asked, "You... you really looked?"
"Go ask Miss Nie," Su Tan'er replied. She was probably feeling sad, because her voice was choked with sobs. She pushed Ning Yi away and lay down on the bed, looking at the top of the mosquito net while sobbing. After a moment, Ning Yi lay down next to her.
"I've known Miss Nie... for a long time..."
"I still care inside," Su Tan'er interrupted Ning Yi, sobbing. "I used to think that no matter if a man was cultured or capable, if he was a scholar, it was normal for him to participate in those literary gatherings and be favored by girls. A man like you, who is both cultured and capable, is bound to be liked by those girls, and even if there are some ambiguous things, it's only natural. You never participated in these things before, and I was strange to it, feeling like you were too aloof. But later I knew, I actually loved it…"
The more she said, the more severe her sobbing became. She reached out and kept wiping away her tears. "I gradually got to know you from talking to you on the balcony those days. Then the imperial merchant affair happened, and then the trip to Hangzhou. I, I... I've been thinking these past few days, is it because I couldn't treat you with sincerity before that I'm going to be punished now..."
"Sometimes I think, I won't stop you from these things. Xiao Chan, that Chief Liu from Hangzhou. You're a capable person, and there will be people who like you. I can't stop it, and what does it matter if a man has three wives and four concubines. The people at home always think that you married into the family and so on, but after those things in Hangzhou, even before that, I knew that as long as you wanted to do something, the identity of a Son-in-Law couldn’t restrain you at all. But... that's what I think in my heart, but I still feel very sad, uncomfortable. I still care a lot in my heart."
She cried loudly, "You're my husband, you're my husband... But you are a Son-in-Law, you are a Son-in-Law... Why did you marry into the family, why didn't you just marry me in the first place... Why did you marry into the family..."
Ning Yi didn't know what to say. As far as he was concerned, this matter only reflected the guilt in his heart. From his perspective, whether it was Su Tan'er or Nie Yunzhu, neither of them was at fault. How could they be at fault? After crying like this and venting for a while, his wife regained some rationality in his arms. He only heard her say, choking, "You like her, I know. Then... find a time to marry her into the family... If it's someone like Miss Nie, it's still... it's still worthy of you..."
"I haven't thought about marrying her home..."
"...Huh?"
Ning Yi's words made Tan'er pause slightly. Just as she was about to speak, a scream tore through the wind and rain outside, coming from afar. The scream was heartbreaking and terrible, but it was clearly someone from the Su family. If it were an ordinary person, they would probably just think that something had happened somewhere and someone had been injured, but Ning Yi and Su Tan'er had only recently returned from Hangzhou and were quite sensitive to such screams. They both paused. Ning Yi raised his head and looked towards the window. Su Tan'er hadn't dried her tears and was still thinking about asking "Why." But in a moment, she listened to the sounds in the rain along with Ning Yi.
After that scream, the sounds in the heavy rain calmed down again. There was no immediate follow-up reaction in the distance or nearby, but the Su family must have been alarmed. After a while, the shouts of the guards and the sound of gongs suddenly boiled in the rain… (To be continued.
