Chapter 146 Luck
The fatty sat cross-legged on the ground, propping his head up with one arm, and said, “We encountered so many strange things when we first entered the rainforest – poisonous rain, man-eating crocodiles, giant pythons… Why is it getting quieter the deeper we go into the rainforest?”
The fatty’s reminder made Derek realize the problem too.
The Ayi tribe had set up so many hidden sentry posts in the surrounding rainforest, so it was definitely safe, and it was normal not to see wild animals or strange birds.
But they had left the Ayi tribe and ventured deep into the rainforest for two days, and other than swamps, poisonous pools, and some animals that weren’t too threatening, they hadn’t seen anything else dangerous.
“This… could it be that we’re just lucky?” Derek murmured.
Luck is a metaphysical thing.
Good and bad can both be attributed to luck, and luck seems to be the ultimate answer to unexplained questions.
The fatty didn’t think that their smooth sailing since leaving the tribe could be attributed to so-called luck.
“Based on my past experience, there must be danger hidden beneath this safety. You have to know, the so-called ‘safety’ around the meteorite is an illusion.”
The fatty said something convoluted, and Derek was completely baffled.
The fatty calmly continued to explain, “Look, since we set off from the tribe, all we’ve encountered are dangers that can be avoided with a little caution, like swamps. If you spot them, you can just walk around them; but we haven’t encountered any threats from wild animals, like jaguars or other fierce predators…”
The fatty continued, “It’s just like the bonfire in front of us, which is enough to deter animals near us from approaching. It can be said that the area within a few meters around us is ‘safe’.”
When he said the word “safe,” the fatty emphasized it.
Derek suddenly understood, “Oh! I get it, you mean…”
Not just Derek, but everyone else next to the fatty and Derek understood what he meant – the meteorite deterred animals within a certain range around it, preventing them from getting close.
The meteorite had a kind of danger that prevented other animals from approaching.
Derek’s pupils contracted, and a sense of crisis arose. In his memory, the fatty hadn’t seemed afraid of anything along the way. He hadn’t paid much attention to the giant python or the cannibals, but he became particularly nervous when the meteorite was mentioned.
Derek came to the conclusion that the “danger” in the fatty’s words was definitely beyond anything he could imagine.
The true situation of the meteorite might be far more terrifying than Derek imagined.
The fatty reminded everyone again, “Near the meteorite, be sure to stick close to me and act according to my instructions. This is for everyone’s safety.”
Dodge was now almost completely obedient to the fatty and didn’t mind handing over command of the team. Seeing that Dodge had no objections, the others accepted the fatty’s request to take over command of the team.
The team members were already exhausted from traveling all day, and there was a fierce battle to fight tomorrow, so they needed to rest and prepare for battle.
No one was in the mood to chat, and everyone except the watchmen went straight into their tents to sleep after eating.
It was the mercenaries from Dodge’s team and Zoey’s turn to watch the first half of the night, and the fatty would watch the second half.
The mercenary didn’t like to talk and didn’t communicate with Zoey at all.
He was drowsy and sleepy, and after experiencing the bonfire going out, the anaconda invading, and his teammate being swallowed, he was afraid that the bonfire fuel would run out, so he kept his head down and nervously added firewood to the fire, adding more and more.
Zoey wasn’t sleepy. After the others went into their tents to rest, she kept her head down, recalling the past.
Ever since Zoey met the young master in the desert, she had been looking forward to seeing him again. Maybe he was in this rainforest right now.
Zoey felt that the young master had changed a lot since their last meeting. He had become more mature, more stable, and he wasn’t afraid of danger.
Once upon a time, Zoey and the young master first met in China. Later, they, along with the fatty and Han Yu, traveled west across most of China to escape from the z organization’s pursuit. Zoey remembered that throughout the whole process, the young master had a naive, introverted, and thoughtful image.
When Zoey saw the young master for the second time, he was already old and frail, and looked as if he had experienced great storms and suffered many hardships, with fatigue and weariness hidden in every wrinkle.
Then later, the third time, Zoey and the young master had that brief encounter in the underground ancient city in the desert. The fatty thought the young master had become cold-blooded and numb, but Zoey didn’t agree with the fatty’s view of the young master. Zoey didn’t think the young master had become a cold-blooded animal.
Instead, Zoey saw the young master’s decisiveness and quick wit, and felt that he was more like a warrior who had returned after experiencing growth and hardship.
The night grew deeper and the dew heavier.
The fatty couldn’t sleep when he thought about facing the threat of the meteorite after dawn.
Jennifer was sleeping soundly in her sleeping bag next to him, and the fatty didn’t want to disturb her, so he tiptoed out of the tent, intending to get some fresh air.
After walking out of the tent, the fatty discovered that Zoey and the watchman mercenary weren’t by the bonfire.
The fatty’s heart skipped a beat. Could something have happened to Zoey?
Then, the fatty searched around as far as his vision allowed in the dim light, and finally found Zoey and the mercenary standing near a clump of vegetation not far from the camp. They seemed to be observing something.
The fatty walked straight towards Zoey, and when he got closer, he called out Zoey’s name.
Zoey heard the fatty’s voice and immediately turned around and gestured for him to be quiet.
"Shh… Something’s up."
