Chapter 29 Temple

The fat man felt nauseous as he looked at the skeletons hanging on meat racks like animals, long decayed with only bones remaining.

During the war-torn ancient times, people lived in misery and desperation. Unable to find food, they resorted to cannibalism. Some foreign armies, when short of supplies during marches, would even eat the slaves they had plundered, euphemistically calling them "two-legged sheep."

The people living in this underground palace actually had a custom of cannibalism.

Before Rou Yi and Han Yu discovered the meat racks, the fat man quickly led everyone out. After leaving the "kitchen," they entered another arched doorway.

The other side of the archway was a completely different structure.

The light in the room was a warm yellow, bright but not dazzling, soft but not dim. It was more comforting than the light in any of the rooms the fat man and the others had been in.

However, under the comforting light, there was an extremely cruel scene.

There were dozens of stone platforms here, covered with coarse cloth and leather, which looked soft and comfortable. This was completely different from the deathly and gloomy barracks they had just passed through, where the stone platforms were bare, hard, and cold.

On top of the coarse cloth and leather were human skeletons.

They were skeletons that had been stripped of their hands and feet, leaving only the head and torso. All the skeletons on the dozens of stone platforms were like this.

In the abdominal cavities of some of the skeletons, one could vaguely see the skull of a small person.

Everyone discovered a cruel and terrifying truth: the owners of these skeletons, who had been stripped of their limbs, were all pregnant women when they were alive.

Rou Yi and Han Yu couldn't understand why the pregnant women's limbs had been cut off. In modern society, the most treasured and beloved people in a family were pregnant women. Pregnant women often received resource support and care from two families. The situation here was completely the opposite.

Thinking of what he had just seen in the kitchen, the fat man couldn't help but shiver.

There might be such a possibility for cutting off the limbs: if they were only used as birthing tools, they didn't need to walk around or work. All they had to do was to keep giving birth.

Perhaps there was another purpose, which was to save food. Cutting off the limbs could reduce the pregnant women's food consumption. By being completely immobile, it would reduce energy supply. Moreover, since the people here ate humans, the cut-off limbs could also supplement their food.

The fat man's hair stood on end when he realized this.

Seeing so many unbelievable scenes, the fat man's mind was deeply stimulated. He didn't want to linger any longer, so he quickly urged, "Finding an exit is important. Let's go."

So Rou Yi and Han Yu followed the fat man back to the circular room, crossed the largest archway, and headed deeper into the passage.

After passing through a long tunnel, the group came to a temple. This temple looked exactly the same as the one they had seen before. The fat man and Han Yu wondered if they had gone in a circle and returned to the starting point.

Rou Yi immediately denied the fat man and Han Yu's views. She said, "When the young master went crazy, he took a bone staff. When we dragged him out, the bone staff was thrown in front of the temple, but there's nothing here. And the most obvious difference is in that statue."

"Look," Rou Yi said, "The statue in this temple is larger than the previous one."

The fat man looked and found it was indeed the case.

Ever since the young master was "possessed," everyone was very afraid of the temple, so they decided to bypass the temple and look for a passage.

As expected, behind the temple was still a double-leafed bronze door. The fat man shook his head helplessly when he saw it.

With the concerted efforts of the fat man, Rou Yi, and Han Yu, they finally pushed open one of the bronze doors enough to squeeze through. The group went through one by one.

Behind the bronze door was actually a huge palace with green glazed tiles and overhanging eaves. The palace stood before them like a small mountain. The huge temple they had seen before was completely insignificant compared to the palace.

The yellow, green, and red light sources on the surrounding rock walls in the space reflected each other, and the outer walls of the palace were radiant and magnificent, showing solemnity and majesty, and also containing a trace of divinity.

This was simply a miracle in the Mountains of Madness.

The fat man rubbed his eyes and patted his face. He had just come out of a cruel scene and immediately saw a magnificent palace. This contrast made it difficult for him to adapt, as if he had gone from hell to heaven.

Not only the fat man was surprised, but Rou Yi and Han Yu also opened their mouths wide, looking incredulous.

Coming to such a magical place, the few people couldn't suppress their curiosity and immediately put the idea of finding a way out behind them, and walked into the palace as if guided by ghosts.

Inside the palace, there were no terrifying human bones like in the temple. Instead, it was decorated with precious treasures such as colored glaze, pearls, ivory, and animal skins. The human and material costs of building such a magnificent palace in the mountains were unimaginable for ordinary people.

The walls around the huge palace were covered with densely packed patterns. These patterns were like ancient musical notes woven in the dark underground palace, telling an unknown history. Rou Yi was attracted to them again when she saw these familiar symbols.

The fat man and Han Yu slowly walked deeper into the palace, walking and looking around, like two tourists. In each of the four corners of the palace was a huge white jade pillar, with various totem patterns carved on them. Four white silk ribbons wrapped around the top of the pillars extended from a high place and gathered around a high platform.

The high platform was located in the innermost center of the palace, and one had to look up to see the things on the high platform.

The two followed the white silk ribbons and looked towards the high platform.

They saw a human-shaped statue on the high platform.

The human-shaped statue was wearing a yellow and white robe similar to silk, and holding a scepter in its hand, standing on the high platform in a cross-legged posture.

The skin of the human-shaped statue was as white as jade, its lips were as red as blood, and its whole body faintly exuded a golden fluorescent light, like a saint or deity, lifelike.

The fat man and Han Yu were stunned. They never thought they would see such a scene in the underground palace.

But in the next moment, this surprise and admiration turned into fear.

The head of the statue on the high platform slowly turned to face the fat man and Han Yu, and then looked at them with eyes like stagnant water.

And the next scene shocked the two even more.
