Chapter 289: Chapter 289: Auditioning
After putting Mitsuri to sleep, as she was exhausted from sex, I arrived at the amphitheatre.
The amphitheater of Nazarick was bathed in a soft, ethereal glow, the eerie beauty of the Great Tomb always managing to leave an impression. As I entered, I found Albedo, Aura, and Mare kneeling in perfect unison, their heads bowed in deference.
Off to the side stood Akaza, his discomfort clear in the way his muscles tensed and his eyes darted around the vast, imposing space. Despite his confidence as a warrior, this was a setting far removed from anything he had ever known.
I didn’t need to probe deeply to understand the source of his unease. Nazarick was overwhelming, especially for someone like Akaza, who had lived his life fighting in a brutal, primitive world. The aura of power that lingered in every corner of this place wasn’t just intimidating—it was oppressive.
Albedo was the first to speak, her voice carrying authority and a hint of disdain as her golden eyes fixed on Akaza. "Kneel, worm. How dare you stand tall in the presence of my lord?
Akaza blinked in surprise, clearly taken aback. Until now, he had only seen Albedo’s composed and polite demeanor as she explained the workings of Nazarick to him. Her sudden shift into fiery anger caught him completely off guard. The venom in her tone, coupled with her imperious glare, was enough to unnerve even someone like him.
Still, he remained standing, his pride as a warrior evident. It wasn’t defiance—just confusion. "I... didn’t mean disrespect," Akaza said, his voice steady but uncertain.
"Enough, Albedo," I interjected, my voice cutting through the tension as I strode closer to the group. "Let it go."
Albedo immediately bowed her head, her expression softening as she turned her attention to me. "As you wish, my lord."
Akaza’s eyes flicked to me, and I could see the faintest hint of relief in his gaze. He wasn’t used to the strict formalities of Nazarick, and I could tell it would take him some time to adjust.
"You can stand as well," I said to Albedo, Aura, and Mare. They rose gracefully, though Albedo’s gaze lingered on Akaza, her displeasure still evident.
I approached the group, my focus shifting to Albedo. "You shouldn’t let your emotions show so easily, Albedo. A face as beautiful as yours shouldn’t wear such an angry expression."
Her cheeks flushed slightly at the compliment, and she inclined her head. "If you say so, my lord."
Turning to Akaza, I asked, "Has Albedo explained everything you need to know about Nazarick?"
Akaza nodded hesitantly. "She has. This place... it’s beyond anything I could have imagined. I’ve never seen such power, such order. It’s... overwhelming."
His honesty was refreshing. He was still adjusting to the grandeur of Nazarick, but I could tell he was slowly beginning to understand his place here.
"I promised you something, Akaza," I said, "The woman who appears in your dreams—the one who holds your heart. I’ll keep my word."
Akaza’s eyes widened, his usually stoic expression giving way to a flicker of hope and vulnerability. "Thank you."
I nodded. "Truly. But first, there are things you need to understand. This place, Nazarick, is not just a fortress—it’s a sanctuary, a kingdom, and a testament to power. If you’re going to stay here, you need to align yourself with its rules and its people. Do you think you can do that?"
He hesitated, then nodded firmly. "If it means I can protect her... if it means I can repay you for your kindness... I’ll do whatever it takes."
I smiled faintly. "Good. "
Aura, standing off to the side, tilted her head curiously. "He doesn’t seem like a bad guy. A bit stiff, though."
Mare nodded timidly. "Y-yeah, he seems nice enough."
Albedo, however, remained silent, her sharp gaze still assessing Akaza. She was fiercely protective of Nazarick, and while she would obey my orders, she would need time to accept him.
"Albedo," I said, drawing her attention. "Ensure Akaza is given a place to stay and that he’s put under Cocytus. He may not be one of us yet, but he’s under my protection."
Her lips pressed into a thin line, but she bowed her head. "As you wish, my lord."
"Now then, let’s bring the girl back."
