Chapter 18 Shifting Blame

Xiao Wen looked up, his face earnest. "Mom, I'm not lying. Don't you want Big Brother to be my dad?"

"I do not! If you say that again, Mom won't talk to you!" Du Huili was mortified and quickly denied it.

Xiao Wen pouted, speaking aggrievedly, "But, but I want Big Brother to be my dad."

He then looked at Chen Mo, "Big Brother, will you agree?"

Chen Mo, having never been subjected to such a situation, was momentarily stunned.

Fortunately, Du Huili quickly pulled Xiao Wen back into the room, allowing Chen Mo to heave a sigh of relief.

"You brat, quite the charmer. You're starting to remind me of myself back in the day," the old ancestor's voice echoed in his mind again.

Chen Mo's forehead creased. "Ancestor, please stop teasing me."

Just then, Chen Mo noticed a bag of Chinese medicine on the table.

He stepped forward and smelled it, realizing it was the same Chinese medicine he had given to Du Huili.

After taking a couple of steps, Chen Mo stumbled, nearly falling to the ground, his head swimming with dizziness.

He knew the after-effects had returned.

After a brief rest and massaging a few acupoints on his body, Chen Mo took the Chinese medicine to the kitchen, found a clay pot, and began to boil the medicine for Xiao Wen.

A while later, Du Huili emerged from the room, tidied up the messy room, and stood at the kitchen door, her face flushed.

"Dr. Chen, Xiao Wen might be lacking fatherly love. Please don't take her words to heart."

Chen Mo gave an awkward smile. "I know."

He then changed the subject. "Xiao Wen needs to drink this medicine once a day. It needs to be soaked for ten minutes first, then simmered over low heat with these herbs, and then the other herbs are added over high heat."

Du Huili nodded. "Thank you, Dr. Chen. I'll handle it from here. You still have work to do and shouldn't be delayed."

With that, Du Huili walked into the cramped kitchen.

Chen Mo checked the time; it was time to return to the hospital. He then walked towards the kitchen exit.

However, the kitchen was very narrow, and they could only pass by turning sideways.

In an instant, their bodies made intimate contact, especially the faint fragrance from Du Huili's hair, which made Chen Mo's heart flutter.

Du Huili's heart also raced, her cheeks burning. She lowered her head, not daring to meet Chen Mo's gaze.

Chen Mo, a mere intern university student, couldn't handle such a situation.

"Gulp."

He couldn't help but swallow.

"Dr. Chen, you, you should go to work," Du Huili reminded him softly.

Chen Mo was jolted back to reality and quickly explained, "Sister Li, your, your shampoo smells very good."

"Oh," Du Huili responded, lowering her head and squeezing into the kitchen, no longer looking at Chen Mo.

Chen Mo knew that staying any longer would only make things more awkward. He picked up his things and left the house.

Seeing Chen Mo leave, Du Huili reached up and touched her burning cheeks.

"What's wrong with me? Why is my heart beating so fast?"

She even found herself replaying the moments of their physical contact.

This thought startled her.

"Du Huili, what are you thinking? He's a talented student and a doctor. How could you possibly be worthy of him?"

Du Huili resolved to maintain a certain distance from Chen Mo.

As Chen Mo arrived at the hospital, he saw Tian Mengyao rushing frantically from the outpatient department towards the inpatient department.

"Dr. Tian," Chen Mo called out.

Hearing Chen Mo's voice, Tian Mengyao paused.

Chen Mo quickly caught up. "Dr. Tian, is something wrong that you're in such a hurry?"

"The patient from today's surgery has a problem."

"A problem? How is that possible?" Chen Mo was full of doubt.

"I'm not sure either. I just received a call from the ICU and was about to head over."

"Let's go together."

Chen Mo didn't dare to delay and ran towards the ICU with Tian Mengyao.

Upon arriving at the ward.

The patient was already on a ventilator, and the data on the monitor was high, with both blood pressure and heart rate at very elevated levels.

This bewildered Chen Mo. His surgery was personally guided by the ancestor; there was no way this situation could occur.

Beep—!

A long alarm sounded.

"Dr. Chen, the patient is experiencing ventricular fibrillation!" Tian Mengyao said anxiously.

"One syringe of adrenaline, prepare the defibrillator."

Chen Mo's expression was grave. Regardless of the reason, he could only try to save the patient for now.

Tian Mengyao quickly pushed the defibrillator over, and a nurse injected adrenaline into the patient's body.

"Why did this patient suddenly go downhill?"

"Chen Mo did this surgery."

"Is that the intern who's been really popular in the hospital these past few days?"

"Who else could it be? I heard he finished the surgery in half an hour. Do you think this patient wouldn't have problems?"

"Half an hour? Isn't that playing with the patient's life?!"

At the entrance of the ward, several young doctors had gathered, discussing amongst themselves.

Their voices were not low, and Chen Mo and Tian Mengyao could naturally hear them.

But at a time like this, Chen Mo had no mood to argue with them.

"Clear the bed!"

Shouting, Chen Mo began the first defibrillation of the patient.

Following that, Tian Mengyao performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the patient.

Finally, after the second defibrillation, the patient's heartbeat returned.

"Why is the heart rate still so high? This is completely abnormal," Tian Mengyao said, looking at the patient's heart rate of over a hundred with confusion.

"Ancestor, what exactly is going on?" Chen Mo inquired in his mind.

"You brat, is your head attached to your backside? Your surgery was fine, so where do you think the problem lies?"

"It's with the medication!"

Chen Mo suddenly came to his senses and quickly asked the nurse to bring the patient's medication records for the day.

After reviewing the day's medication records, Chen Mo's eyes widened when he saw Metoprolol Tartrate tablets.

"Metoprolol Tartrate tablets? Isn't that a medication for the heart?" Tian Mengyao also sensed something was wrong.

"Who prescribed this medication?" Chen Mo asked.

A nurse nervously flipped through the prescription records and then said, "Director Chen, you prescribed it."

"Me?" Chen Mo was stunned and quickly looked at the signature on the prescription.

He found that the name signed on the prescription record was indeed Chen Mo!

"How is this possible? When did I ever prescribe this medication!" Chen Mo stared at the signature slip in his hand in shock.

"Director Chen, what do you mean by that? Are you suspecting that we nurses administered this medication to the patient ourselves?" Just then, Su Mei walked into the ICU and questioned coldly.

"But this medication was definitely not prescribed by me," Chen Mo stated with certainty.

"Director Chen, do you think anyone will believe what you're saying? If you want to frame us nurses, don't even think about it! We are not stepping stones for your advancement!"

Her words caused the previously nervous nurses to look at Chen Mo with displeasure.

Clearly, they also felt that Su Mei had a point, and if Chen Mo didn't admit it, he was likely trying to shirk responsibility.
